Method of Preparation of Soluble PEDOT: Self‐Polymerization of EDOT without Oxidant at Room Temperature

Conductive nanofiltration membranes via in situ PEDOT-polymerization for electro-assisted membrane fouling mitigation

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes play a pivotal role in water treatment; however, the persistent challenge of membrane fouling hampers their stable application. This study introduces a novel approach to address this issue through the creation of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based conductive membrane, achieved by synergistically coupling interfacial polymerization (IP) with in situ self-polymerization of EDOT. During the IP reaction, the concurrent generation of HCl triggers the protonation of EDOT, activating its self-polymerization into PEDOT. This interwoven structure integrates with the polyamide network to establish a stable selective layer, yielding a remarkable 90 % increase in permeability to 20.4 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. Leveraging the conductivity conferred by PEDOT doping, an electro-assisted cleaning strategy is devised, rapidly restoring the flux to 98.3 % within 5 min, outperforming the 30-minute pure water cleaning approach. Through simulations in an 8040 spiral-wound module and the utilization of the permeated salt solution for cleaning, the electro-assisted cleaning strategy emerges as an eco-friendly solution, significantly reducing water consumption and incurring only a marginal electricity cost of 0.055 $ per day. This work presents an innovative avenue for constructing conductive membranes and introduces an efficient and cost-effective electro-assisted cleaning strategy to effectively combat membrane fouling.

Sequential In-Situ Growth of Layered Conjugated Polymers for Optoelectronics Under Electrochemical Control

Layered optoelectronic devices are manufactured using multistep procedures that require high precision in the spatial positioning of individual materials. Current technology uses costly and tedious procedures and instrumentation. In this work instead, we propose an approach which exploits the fundamental properties of the substrate to direct the growth of the next layer, here controlled by an electrochemical potential. We have electrochemically synthesized and characterized a series of polymeric materials that are most commonly used in the field. The films produced show gradient monomer ratios embedded in the polymeric film as a function of the distance from the working electrode. Under the optimized conditions, reproducible construction of simple electronic elements, e. g., rectifying diodes, is achieved. We argue that the sequential in situ method leads to gradient composition of polymer chains and the film resulting in the rectification of electric current. We discuss how this system can open new avenues in advanced optoelectronic applications, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) or field-effect transistors (OFETs).

A New Method to Prepare Stable Polyaniline Dispersions for Highly Loaded Cathodes of All-Polymer Li-Ion Batteries

A new method for the preparation of polyaniline (PANI) films that have a 2D structure and can record high active mass loading (up to 30 mg cm^-2) via acid-assisted polymerization in the presence of concentrated formic acid was developed. This new approach represents a simple reaction pathway that proceeds quickly at room temperature in quantitative isolated yield with the absence of any byproducts and leads to the formation of a stable suspension that can be stored for a prolonged time without sedimentation. The observed stability was explained by two factors: (a) the small size of the obtained rod-like particles (50 nm) and (b) the change of the surface of colloidal PANI particles to a positively charged form by protonation with concentrated formic acid. The films cast from the concentrated suspension were composed of amorphous PANI chains assembled into 2D structures with nanofibrillar morphology. Such PANI films demonstrated fast and efficient diffusion of the ions in liquid electrolyte and showed a pair of revisable oxidation and reduction peaks in cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, owing to the high mass loading, specific morphology, and porosity, the synthesized polyaniline film was impregnated by a single-ion conducting polyelectrolyte-poly(LiM_n-r-PEGM_m) and characterized as a novel lightweight all-polymeric cathode material for solid-state Li batteries by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques.

An electrochemical sensor based on Ce-MOF-derived Ce-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) composite for efficient determination of rutin in food

As a common antioxidant and nutritional fortifier in food chemistry, rutin has positive therapeutic effects against novel coronaviruses. Here, Ce-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (Ce-PEDOT) nanocomposites derived through cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) as a sacrificial template have been synthesized and successfully applied to electrochemical sensors. Due to the outstanding electrical conductivity of PEDOT and the high catalytic activity of Ce, the nanocomposites were used for the detection of rutin. The Ce-PEDOT/GCE sensor detects rutin over a linear range of 0.02-9 μM with the limit of detection of 14.7 nM (S/N = 3). Satisfactory results were obtained in the determination of rutin in natural food samples (buckwheat tea and orange). Moreover, the redox mechanism and electrochemical reaction sites of rutin were investigated by the CV curves of scan rate and density functional theory. This work is the first to demonstrate the combined PEDOT and Ce-MOF-derived materials as an electrochemical sensor to detect rutin, thus opening a new window for the application of the material in detection.

Influence of the Nature and Structure of Polyelectrolyte Cryogels on the Polymerization of (3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) and Spectroscopic Characterization of the Composites

Conductive hydrogels are polymeric materials that are promising for bioelectronic applications. In the present study, a complex based on sulfonic cryogels and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was investigated as an example of a conductive hydrogel. Preparation of polyacrylate cryogels of various morphologies was carried out by cryotropic gelation of 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate and sulfobetaine methacrylate in the presence of functional comonomers (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate). Polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene in the presence of several of the above cryogels occurred throughout the entire volume of each polyelectrolyte cryogel because of its porous structure. Structural features of cryogel@PEDOT complexes in relation to their electrochemical properties were investigated. It was shown that poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) of a linear conformation was formed in the presence of a cryogel based on sulfobetaine methacrylate, while minimum values of charge-transfer resistance were observed in those complexes, and electrochemical properties of the complexes did not depend on diffusion processes.

Preparation of Smart Surfaces Based on PNaSS@PEDOT Microspheres: Testing of E. coli Detection

The main task of the research is to acquire fundamental knowledge about the effect of polymer structure on the physicochemical properties of films. A novel meta-material that can be used in manufacturing sensor layers was developed as a model. At the first stage, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PNaSS) cross-linked microspheres are synthesized (which are based on strong polyelectrolytes containing sulfo groups in each monomer unit), and at the second stage, PNaSS@PEDOT microspheres are formed. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) shell was obtained by the acid-assisted self-polymerization of the monomer; this process is biologically safe and thus suitable for biomedical applications. The suitability of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for E. coli detection was tested; it was revealed that the attached bacterial wall was destroyed upon application of constant oxidation potential (higher than 0.5 V), which makes the PNaSS@PEDOT microsphere particles promising materials for the development of antifouling coatings. Furthermore, under open-circuit conditions, the walls of E. coli bacteria were not destroyed, which opens up the possibility of employing such meta-materials as sensor films. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction methods were applied in order to characterize the PNaSS@PEDOT films.

Progress in Synthesis of Conductive Polymer Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

PEDOT is the most popularly used conductive polymer due to its high conductivity, good physical and chemical stability, excellent optical transparency, and the capabilities of easy doping and solution processing. Based on the advantages above, PEDOT has been widely used in various devices for energy conversion and storage, and bio-sensing. The synthesis method of PEDOT is very important as it brings different properties which determine its applications. In this mini review, we begin with a brief overview of recent researches in PEDOT. Then, the synthesis methods of PEDOT are summarized in detail, including chemical polymerization, electrochemical polymerization, and transition metal-mediated coupling polymerization. Finally, research directions in acquiring high-quality PEDOT are discussed and proposed.

3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) End-Group Functionalized Poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL): Self-Assembly in Organic Solvents and Its Coincidentally Observed Peculiar Behavior in Thin Film and Protonated Media

End-group functionalization of homopolymers is a valuable way to produce high-fidelity nanostructured and functional soft materials when the structures obtained have the capacity for self-assembly (SA) encoded in their structural details. Herein, an end-functionalized PCL with a π-conjugated EDOT moiety, (EDOT-PCL), designed exclusively from hydrophobic domains, as a functional "hydrophobic amphiphile", was synthesized in the bulk ROP of ε-caprolactone. The experimental results obtained by spectroscopic methods, including NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescence, using DLS and by AFM, confirm that in solvents with extremely different polarities (chloroform and acetonitrile), EDOT-PCL presents an interaction- and structure-based bias, which is strong and selective enough to exert control over supramolecular packing, both in dispersions and in the film state. This leads to the diversity of SA structures, including spheroidal, straight, and helical rods, as well as orthorhombic single crystals, with solvent-dependent shapes and sizes, confirming that EDOT-PCL behaves as a "block-molecule". According to the results from AFM imaging, an unexpected transformation of micelle-type nanostructures into single 2D lamellar crystals, through breakout crystallization, took place by simple acetonitrile evaporation during the formation of the film on the mica support at room temperature. Moreover, EDOT-PCL's propensity for spontaneous oxidant-free oligomerization in acidic media was proposed as a presumptive answer for the unexpected appearance of blue color during its dissolution in CDCl3 at a high concentration. FT-IR, UV-vis, and fluorescence techniques were used to support this claim. Besides being intriguing and unforeseen, the experimental findings concerning EDOT-PCL have raised new and interesting questions that deserve to be addressed in future research.
