Rapid and Sustainable Electrochemical Pd Catalyst Generation from Bulk Metal

Palladium catalysts constitute a cornerstone of modern chemistry with upmost scientific and industrial impact. Bulk palladium metal itself is chemically inert, and a sequence of chemical transformations has to be utilized to convert the metal into a Pd precatalyst covered by ligands. However, the "cocktail" concept of catalysis discovered recently has shown that Pd systems can efficiently operate in catalysis without the need for a complicated and expensive preinstalled ligand environment. Here, we point out on a green and sustainable process for the generation of Pd active species without the need for waste-abundant precatalyst-related chemistry. In this work, an electric current was used to generate an active Pd catalyst from a bulk metal in an ionic liquid medium for the efficient cross-coupling of aryl iodides/bromides and boronic acids. A synthetically important Suzuki cross-coupling was utilized as a representative test reaction to confirm the idea. Notably, an electric current is used only at the Pd dissolution stage. Afterwards, the electrodes are removed from the reaction mixture, and a standard reaction procedure can be followed. The reported catalyst preparation process via electrochemical dissolution is potentially compatible with several already existing catalytic methods.

Polymerized and Colloidal Ionic Liquids─Syntheses and Applications

The breadth and importance of polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) are steadily expanding, and this review updates advances and trends in syntheses, properties, and applications over the past five to six years. We begin with an historical overview of the genesis and growth of the PIL field as a subset of materials science. The genesis of ionic liquids (ILs) over nano to meso length-scales exhibiting 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D topologies defines colloidal ionic liquids, CILs, which compose a subclass of PILs and provide a synthetic bridge between IL monomers (ILMs) and micro to macro-scale PIL materials. The second focus of this review addresses design and syntheses of ILMs and their polymerization reactions to yield PILs and PIL-based materials. A burgeoning diversity of ILMs reflects increasing use of nonimidazolium nuclei and an expanding use of step-growth chemistries in synthesizing PIL materials. Radical chain polymerization remains a primary method of making PILs and reflects an increasing use of controlled polymerization methods. Step-growth chemistries used in creating some CILs utilize extensive cross-linking. This cross-linking is enabled by incorporating reactive functionalities in CILs and PILs, and some of these CILs and PILs may be viewed as exotic cross-linking agents. The third part of this update focuses upon some advances in key properties, including molecular weight, thermal properties, rheology, ion transport, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness. Glass transitions, critical solution temperatures, and liquidity are key thermal properties that tie to PIL rheology and viscoelasticity. These properties in turn modulate mechanical properties and ion transport, which are foundational in increasing applications of PILs. Cross-linking in gelation and ionogels and reversible step-growth chemistries are essential for self-healing PILs. Stimuli-responsiveness distinguishes PILs from many other classes of polymers, and it emphasizes the importance of segmentally controlling and tuning solvation in CILs and PILs. The fourth part of this review addresses development of applications, and the diverse scope of such applications supports the increasing importance of PILs in materials science. Adhesion applications are supported by ionogel properties, especially cross-linking and solvation tunable interactions with adjacent phases. Antimicrobial and antifouling applications are consequences of the cationic nature of PILs. Similarly, emulsion and dispersion applications rely on tunable solvation of functional groups and on how such groups interact with continuous phases and substrates. Catalysis is another significant application, and this is an historical tie between ILs and PILs. This component also provides a connection to diverse and porous carbon phases templated by PILs that are catalysts or serve as supports for catalysts. Devices, including sensors and actuators, also rely on solvation tuning and stimuli-responsiveness that include photo and electrochemical stimuli. We conclude our view of applications with 3D printing. The largest components of these applications are energy related and include developments for supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, and solar cells. We conclude with our vision of how PIL development will evolve over the next decade.

Ice-Assisted Porous Poly(ionic liquid)/MXene Composite Membranes for Solar Steam Generation

Controlled synthesis of polymer-based porous membranes via innovative methods is of considerable interest, yet it remains a challenge. Herein, we established a general approach to fabricate porous polyelectrolyte composite membranes (PPCMs) from poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and MXene via an ice-assisted method. This process enabled the formation of a uniformly distributed macroporous structure within the membrane. The unique characteristics of the as-produced composite membranes display significant light-to-heat conversion and excellent performance for solar-driven water vapor generation. This facile synthetic strategy breaks new ground for developing composite porous membranes as high-performance solar steam generators for clean water production.

A Highly Sensitive, Ultra-Durable, Eco-Friendly Ionic Skin for Human Motion Monitoring

Ionic conductive hydrogels have shown great potential in areas such as wearable devices and electronic skins. Aiming at the sensitivity and biodegradability of the traditional flexible hydrogel electronic skin, this paper developed an ionic skin (S−iSkin) based on edible starch–sodium alginate (starch–SA), which can convert the external strain stimulus into a voltage signal without an external power supply. As an excellent ion conductive polymer, S−iSkin exhibited good stretchability, low hydrophilicity and outstanding electrochemical and sensing properties. Driven by sodium ions, the ion charge transfer resistance of S−iSkin is reduced by 4 times, the capacitance value is increased by 2 times and its conductivity is increased by 7 times. Additionally, S−iSkin has excellent sensitivity and linearity (R² = 0.998), a long service life and good biocompatibility. Under the action of micro-stress, it can produce a voltage change ratio of 2.6 times, and its sensitivity is 52.04. The service life test showed that it can work stably for 2000 s and work more than 200 stress–voltage response cycles. These findings provide a foundation for the development of health monitoring systems and micro-stress sensing devices based on renewable biomass materials.

Enhanced fluorescence quenching for p-nitrophenol in imidazolium ionic liquids using a europium-based fluorescent probe

p-Nitrophenol (PNP) is a toxic contaminant in water, the detection of which has attracted considerable attention. Since ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely used as popular solvents in both extraction and catalysts for PNP, the remediation of PNP is not limited to water and traditional organic solvents. Thus, it is significant to develop approaches for the detection of PNP in ILs. Accordingly, the present work is focused on the detection of PNP in a series of imidazolium-based ILs, 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide ([Hmim]Br), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromesulfonate ([Bmim]TfO), 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoroacetate ([Bmim]TA), and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium nitrate ([Bmim]NO3), using a europium-based fluorescent probe, Na3[Eu(DPA)3] (DPA = 2, 6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid). This fluorescent probe showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward [Bmim]NO3 in aqueous solution. Further studies showed that not only the fluorescence performance of the europium complex was enhanced in the other four ILs compared with that in water, but also the detecting capability for PNP was improved. The order of the quenching efficiency in different solvents was: [Bmim]BF4 > [Bmim]TfO > [Hmim]Br > [Bmim]TA > water. The higher sensitivity for PNP in ILs was proven to be related to the efficient energy transfer of the europium complex and lower solvent polarity of the ILs. The quenching mechanism for the detection of PNP was established as being due to the ground state electrostatic interactions between the fluorescent probe and analyte, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and inner filter effect (IFE).

Ferrocene-Containing Porous Poly(Ionic Liquid) Membranes: Synthesis and Application as Sacrificial Template for Porous Iron Oxide Films

Herein, the fabrication of iron-containing porous polyelectrolyte membranes (PPMs) via ionic complexation between an imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and 1,1-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid is reported. The key parameters to control the microstructure of porous hybrid membranes are investigated in detail. Further aerobic pyrolysis of such porous hybrid membranes at 900 °C can transfer the ferrocene-containing PPMs into freestanding porous iron oxide films. This process points out a sacrificial template function of porous poly(ionic liquid) membranes in the fabrication of porous metal oxide films.
