Polyacrylamide-Based Binary Luminescent Copolymer Materials Exhibit Color-Tunable and Efficient Long-Lived Room Temperature Phosphorescence

4D Assembly of Time-dependent Lanthanide Supramolecular Multicolor Phosphorescence for Encryption and Visual Sensing

Supramolecular dynamic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is the focus of current research because of its wide application in biological imaging and information anti-counterfeiting. Herein, a time-dependent supramolecular lanthanide phosphorescent 4D assembly material with multicolor luminescence including white, which is composed of 4-(4-bromophenyl)-pyridine salt derivative (G), inorganic clay (LP)/Eu complex and pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) is reported. Compared with the self-assembled nanoparticle G, the lamellar assembly G/LP showed the double emission of fluorescence at 380 nm and phosphorescence at 516 nm over time. Within 60 min, the phosphorescence lifetime and the quantum yield increases from none to 7.4 ms and 27.53% respectively, achieving the time-dependent phosphorescence emission, due to the limitation of progressive stacking of LP electrostatically driven "domino effect." Furthermore, the 4D assembly of DPA and G/LP/Eu leads to a time-resolved multicolor emission from colorless to purple to white, which is successfully applied to information multi-level logic anti-counterfeiting and efficiently antibiotic selective sensor.

Construction of Carbon Dots@LiCl-polyacrylamide with Humidity-Induced Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence to Fluorescence and Rigid-to-Flexible Transition Behavior

The continuous advancement of luminescent materials has placed increasingly stringent requirements on dynamic color-tunable ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (URTP) materials that can respond to external stimuli. Nevertheless, endowing URTP materials with stimuli-response-induced dynamic color tuning is a challenging task. This study introduces a carbon dots (CDs)@LiCl-polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer system that switches from URTP to fluorescence under humidity stimuli, accompanied by a transition from rigidity to flexibility. The obtained rigid CDs@LiCl-PAM exhibits ultralong green phosphorescence with a lifetime of 560 ms in the initial state. After absorbing moisture, it becomes flexible and its phosphorescence switches off. Moreover, the emission of the CDs@LiCl-PAM film depends on the excitation wavelength. This property can potentially used in multicolored luminescence applications and displays. Moreover, multicolor luminescent patterns can be constructed in situ using the water-absorption ability of the obtained thin film and the Förster resonance energy-transfer strategy. The proposed strategy is expected to promote the interdisciplinary development of intelligent information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and smart flexible display materials.

Color-Tunable Binary Copolymers Manipulated by Intramolecular Aggregation and Hydrogen Bonding

Construction of color-tunable luminescent polymeric materials with enhanced emission intensity and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) performance regulated by a single chromophore component is highly desirable in the scope of photoluminescent materials. Herein, a set of binary copolymers were facilely synthesized using free radical polymerization by selecting different types of polymer matrix and N-substituted naphthalimides (NPA) as chromophores. Surprisingly, the fluorescence emission of copolymers could be remarkably enhanced, because of the intramolecular aggregation of NPA manipulated by a single polymer chain in both solution and solid state. Moreover, RTP signals of binary copolymers were all clearly observed in the air without any processing procedure, because of the embedding of phosphors into hydrogen bonding networks after copolymerization with vinyl-based acrylamide monomers. Taking advantages of the synergistic effect of copolymerization-induced aggregation and copolymerization-induced rigidification to promote optical performance, UV stimulus-responsive luminescent polymer films with processability, flexibility, and adjustable emission wavelength were simply prepared using a drop-casting method in large scale, the setting of which is the basis for application in the fields of organic optoelectronics, information security, and bioimaging/sensing.

Room temperature tunable multicolor phosphorescent polymers for humidity detection and information encryption

Amorphous polymer-based room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials exhibiting tunable emission colors have received tremendous attention and are extremely challenging to prepare. Herein, polyacrylamide-based RTP materials with tunable multicolor emission were prepared via copolymerizing phosphor with concentration dependent luminescence colors and acrylamide with different molar ratios. The hydrogen bonding interactions and chemically crosslinked structures in these polymers effectively restrict the mobility of phosphors and activate efficient RTP emission. The molar ratio of phosphor and acrylamide has a significant influence on the photophysical properties of these polymers, which can be used to fabricate multicolor materials. In addition, the RTP intensity decreases with increasing humidity due to the disassociation of hydrogen bonding by adsorption of water, manifesting as a humidity sensor. Benefiting from the distinguishable RTP lifetimes and the responsiveness to humidity, triple encoding for information encryption is successfully realized.
