Abstract
Oil spills and the presence of oily wastewater have resulted in substantial ecological damage. Superhydrophobic polymer foam with selectivity and adsorption capacity is a promising candidate for efficient oil-water separation. In this study, a method that combines phase separation and silica coating to produce superhydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) foam is proposed. The TPU foam demonstrates superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 155.62°, and exhibits a maximum saturated adsorption capacity of 54.11 g g-1 . Furthermore, the foam can be utilized as a filter for oil-water separation, maintaining its filtration efficiency (41.2 m3 m2 h-1 ) even after ten filtration cycles.

Abstract
Development of efficient absorbent materials for detection and treatment of offshore oil spillages remained a challenge. In this work, C-shaped polypropylene oil-absorbent fibers with sub-micron internal pores were prepared by combining spun-bonding technique and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The effect of drawing speed on the phase separation and the porous morphology of the shaped fiber non-woven fabric (NWF) was investigated. C-shaped NWF with porous morphology had large water contact angle, higher porosity, larger specific surface area, and increased oil absorption speed and capacity. An online oil spillage detection system was developed using porous C-shaped NWF and an oxygen sensing probe, showing shorter response time and higher signal-to-noise (STN) ratio. The response time for detecting the spillage of soybean oil and diluted crude oil (0.5 mL/0.8 L) in water were only 24 s and 10 s, respectively. The reliable oil detection low detection limit (RLDL) of the oxygen sensing probe was reduced 173 times (from 36.5 g/L to 0.21 g/L) when combined with C-shaped porous fiber NWF.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of novel castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) foam functionalized with octadecyltrichlorosilane (C18)-modified diatomaceous earth (DE) particles, exhibiting superior hydrophobicity and oil adsorption, and poor water absorption, for use in effective clean-up of crude oil spillage in water bodies. High-performance and low-cost sorbents have a tremendous attraction in oil spill clean-up applications. Recent studies have focused on the use of castor oil as a significant polyol that can be used as a biodegradable and eco-friendly raw material for the synthesis of PU. However, biobased in-house synthesis of foam modified with C18-DE particles has not yet been reported. This study involves the synthesis of PU using castor oil, further modification of castor oil-based PU using C18 silane, characterization studies and elucidation of oil adsorption capacity. The FTIR analysis confirmed the fusion of C18 silane particles inside the PU skeleton by adding the new functional group, and the XRD study signified the inclusion of crystalline peaks in amorphous pristine PU foam owing to the silane cross-link structure. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated improvement in thermal stability and high residual content after chemical modification with alkyl chain moieties. The SEM and EDX analyses showed the surface's roughness and the incorporation of inorganic and organic elements into pristine PU foam. The contact angle analysis showed increased hydrophobicity of the modified PU foams treated with C18-DE particles. The oil absorption studies showed that the C18-DE-modified PU foam, in comparison with the unmodified one, exhibited a 2.91-fold increase in the oil adsorption capacity and a 3.44-fold decrease in the water absorbing nature. From these studies, it is understood that this novel foam can be considered as a potential candidate for cleaning up oil spillage on water bodies.

Abstract
Evaporation is an interfacial phenomenon in which a water molecule breaks the intermolecular hydrogen (H-) bonds and enters the vapor phase. However, a detailed demonstration of the role of interfacial water structure in the evaporation process is still lacking. Here, we purposefully perturb the H-bonding environment at the air/water interface by introducing kosmotropic (HPO4-2, SO4-2, and CO3-2) and chaotropic ions (NO3- and I-) to determine their influence on the evaporation process. Using time-resolved interferometry on aqueous salt droplets, we found that kosmotropes reduce evaporation, whereas chaotropes accelerate the evaporation process, following the Hofmeister series: HPO4-2 < SO4-2 < CO3-2 < Cl- < NO3- < I-. To extract deeper molecular-level insights into the observed Hofmeister trend in the evaporation rates, we investigated the air/water interface in the presence of ions using surface-specific sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The SFG vibrational spectra reveal the significant impact of ions on the strength of the H-bonding environment and the orientation of free OH oscillators from ∼36.2 to 48.4° at the air/water interface, where both the effects follow the Hofmeister series. It is established that the slow evaporating water molecules experience a strong H-bonding environment with free OH oscillators tilted away from the surface normal in the presence of kosmotropes. In contrast, the fast evaporating water molecules experience a weak H-bonding environment with free OH oscillators tilted toward the surface normal in the presence of chaotropes at the air/water interface. Our experimental outcomes showcase the complex bonding environment of interfacial water molecules and their decisive role in the evaporation process.
