Static coded aperture in robotic X-ray tomography systems

Coded aperture X-ray computed tomography is a computational imaging technique capable of reconstructing inner structures of an object from a reduced set of X-ray projection measurements. Coded apertures are placed in front of the X-ray sources from different views and thus significantly reduce the radiation dose. This paper introduces coded aperture X-ray computed tomography for robotic X-ray systems which offer positioning flexibility. While single coded-aperture 3D tomography was recently introduced for standard trajectory CT scanning, it is shown that significant gains in imaging performance can be attained by simple modifications in the CT scanning trajectories enabled by emerging dual robotic CT systems. In particular, the subject is fixed on a plane and the CT system uniformly rotates around the r -axis which is misaligned with the coordinate axes. A single stationary coded aperture is placed on front of the robotic X-ray source above the plane and the corresponding X-ray projections are measured by a two-dimensional detector on the second arm of the robotic system. The compressive measurements with misalignment enable the reconstruction of high-resolution three-dimensional volumetric images from the low-resolution coded projections on the detector at a sub-sampling rate. An efficient algorithm is proposed to generate the rotation matrix with two basic sub-matrices and thus the forward model is formulated. The stationary coded aperture is designed based on the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient analysis and the direct binary search algorithm is used to obtain the optimized coded aperture. Simulations using simulated datasets show significant gains in reconstruction performance compared to conventional coded aperture CT systems.

Prior-image-based CT reconstruction using attenuation-mismatched priors

Prior-image-based reconstruction (PIBR) methods are powerful tools for reducing radiation doses and improving the image quality of low-dose computed tomography (CT). Apart from anatomical changes, prior and current images can also have different attenuations because they originated from different scanners or from the same scanner but with different x-ray beam qualities (e.g., kVp settings, beam filters) during data acquisition. In such scenarios, with attenuation-mismatched priors, PIBR is challenging. In this work, we investigate a specific PIBR method, called statistical image reconstruction, using normal-dose image-induced nonlocal means regularization (SIR-ndiNLM), to address PIBR with such attenuation-mismatched priors and achieve quantitative low-dose CT imaging. We propose two corrective schemes for the original SIR-ndiNLM method, (1) a global histogram-matching approach and (2) a local attenuation correction approach, to account for the attenuation differences between the prior and current images in PIBR. We validate the efficacy of the proposed schemes using images acquired from dual-energy CT scanners to simulate attenuation mismatches. Meanwhile, we utilize different CT slices to simulate anatomical mismatches or changes between the prior and the current low-dose image. We observe that the original SIR-ndiNLM introduces artifacts to the reconstruction when an attenuation-mismatched prior is used. Furthermore, we find that a larger attenuation mismatch between the prior and current images results in more severe artifacts in the SIR-ndiNLM reconstruction. Our two proposed corrective schemes enable SIR-ndiNLM to effectively handle the attenuation mismatch and anatomical changes between the two images and successfully eliminate the artifacts. We demonstrate that the proposed techniques permit SIR-ndiNLM to leverage the attenuation-mismatched prior and achieve quantitative low-dose CT reconstruction from both low-flux and sparse-view data acquisitions. This work permits robust and reliable PIBR for CT data acquired using different beam settings.

A dual-domain deep learning-based reconstruction method for fully 3D sparse data helical CT

Helical CT has been widely used in clinical diagnosis. In this work, we focus on a new prototype of helical CT, equipped with sparsely spaced multidetector and multi-slit collimator (MSC) in the axis direction. This type of system can not only lower radiation dose, and suppress scattering by MSC, but also cuts down the manufacturing cost of the detector. The major problem to overcome with such a system, however, is that of insufficient data for reconstruction. Hence, we propose a deep learning-based function optimization method for this ill-posed inverse problem. By incorporating a Radon inverse operator, and disentangling each slice, we significantly simplify the complexity of our network for 3D reconstruction. The network is composed of three subnetworks. Firstly, a convolutional neural network (CNN) in the projection domain is constructed to estimate missing projection data, and to convert helical projection data to 2D fan-beam projection data. This is follwed by the deployment of an analytical linear operator to transfer the data from the projection domain to the image domain. Finally, an additional CNN in the image domain is added for further image refinement. These three steps work collectively, and can be trained end to end. The overall network is trained on a simulated CT dataset based on eight patients from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Low Dose CT Grand Challenge. We evaluate the trained network on both simulated datasets and clinical datasets. Extensive experimental studies have yielded very encouraging results, based on both visual examination and quantitative evaluation. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method and its potential for clinical usage. The proposed method provides us with a new solution for a fully 3D ill-posed problem.

An Investigation of Slot-scanning for Mammography and Breast CT

Mammography and breast CT are important tools for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Current implementations are limited by scattered radiation and/or spatial resolution. In this work, we propose and develop a slot scan-based system to be used in both mammography and CT mode that can limit scatter and collect sparse CT data for improved image quality at low radiation exposures. Monte Carlo simulations of an anthropomorphic breast phantom show a factor of 10 reduction in scattering amplitude with our slot scan-based system compared to that of a full-field detector mammography system (area mode). Similarly, slot-scan improved the MTF (particularly the low-frequency response) compared to an area detector. Investigation of sparse CT sampling with doubly sparse acquisition data return better quality reconstruction, for which our slot-scanning system is capable, over angle-only projection. Thus, a system with the combined ability for slot-scanning mammography and slot-scanning breast CT has the potential to deliver improved dose-efficient imaging performance and become viable breast cancer screening and diagnostic tools.

Image reconstruction for interrupted-beam x-ray CT on diagnostic clinical scanners

Low-dose x-ray CT is a major research area with high clinical impact. Compressed sensing using view-based sparse sampling and sparsity-promoting regularization has shown promise in simulations, but these methods can be difficult to implement on diagnostic clinical CT scanners since the x-ray beam cannot be switched on and off rapidly enough. An alternative to view-based sparse sampling is interrupted-beam sparse sampling. SparseCT is a recently-proposed interrupted-beam scheme that achieves sparse sampling by blocking a portion of the beam using a multislit collimator (MSC). The use of an MSC necessitates a number of modifications to the standard compressed sensing reconstruction pipeline. In particular, we find that SparseCT reconstruction is feasible within a model-based image reconstruction framework that incorporates data fidelity weighting to consider penumbra effects and source jittering to consider the effect of partial source obstruction. Here, we present these modifications and demonstrate their application in simulations and real-world prototype scans. In simulations compared to conventional low-dose acquisitions, SparseCT is able to achieve smaller normalized root-mean square differences and higher structural similarity measures on two reduction factors. In prototype experiments, we successfully apply our reconstruction modifications and maintain image resolution at quarter-dose reduction level. The SparseCT design requires only small hardware modifications to current diagnostic clinical scanners, opening up new possibilities for CT dose reduction.
