Automated test apparatus for bench-testing the magnetic field homogeneity of NMR transceiver coils

We describe an automated hands-off bench testing method for measuring the magnetic field profile of transceiver coils for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The scattering parameter (S-parameter) data is measured using a portable network analyzer, and the results are automatically exported to a computer for plotting and viewing. This assay dramatically reduces the time needed to measure the magnetic field (B1) homogeneity profile of a transceiver coil while also improving accuracy relative to manual operation. Here, we demonstrate the method on a saddle coil of a solution-state NMR probe in comparison to profiles obtained using NMR spectroscopy measurements. We also measure the axial and radial homogeneity of a variable-pitch solenoid.

Signal Deconvolution and Noise Factor Analysis Based on a Combination of Time-Frequency Analysis and Probabilistic Sparse Matrix Factorization

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is commonly used to characterize molecular complexity because it produces informative atomic-resolution data on the chemical structure and molecular mobility of samples non-invasively by means of various acquisition parameters and pulse programs. However, analyzing the accumulated NMR data of mixtures is challenging due to noise and signal overlap. Therefore, data-cleansing steps, such as quality checking, noise reduction, and signal deconvolution, are important processes before spectrum analysis. Here, we have developed an NMR measurement informatics tool for data cleansing that combines short-time Fourier transform (STFT; a time-frequency analytical method) and probabilistic sparse matrix factorization (PSMF) for signal deconvolution and noise factor analysis. Our tool can be applied to the original free induction decay (FID) signals of a one-dimensional NMR spectrum. We show that the signal deconvolution method reduces the noise of FID signals, increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) about tenfold, and its application to diffusion-edited spectra allows signals of macromolecules and unsuppressed small molecules to be separated by the length of the T₂* relaxation time. Noise factor analysis of NMR datasets identified correlations between SNR and acquisition parameters, identifying major experimental factors that can lower SNR.

Quantitative analysis of urea in human urine and serum by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance

A convenient and fast method for quantifying urea in biofluids is demonstrated using NMR analysis and the solvent water signal as a concentration reference. The urea concentration can be accurately determined with errors less than 3% between 1 mM and 50 mM, and less than 2% above 50 mM in urine and serum. The method is promising for various applications with advantages of simplicity, high accuracy, and fast non-destructive detection. With an ability to measure other metabolites simultaneously, this NMR method is also likely to find applications in metabolic profiling and system biology.
