Dynamic off-resonance correction for spiral real-time MRI of speech

Increasing the scan-efficiency of pulmonary imaging at 0.55 T using iterative concomitant field and motion-corrected reconstruction

PURPOSE

To develop an iterative concomitant field and motion corrected (iCoMoCo) reconstruction for isotropic high-resolution UTE pulmonary imaging at 0.55 T.

METHODS

A free-breathing golden-angle stack-of-spirals UTE sequence was used to acquire data for 8 min with prototype and commercial 0.55 T MRI scanners. The data was binned into 12 respiratory phases based on superior-inferior navigator readouts. The previously published iterative motion corrected (iMoCo) reconstruction was extended to include concomitant field correction directly in the cost function. The reconstruction was implemented within the Gadgetron framework for inline reconstruction. Data were retrospectively reconstructed to simulate scan times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 min. Image quality was assessed using apparent SNR and image sharpness. The technique was evaluated in healthy volunteers and patients with known lung pathology including coronavirus disease 2019 infection, chronic granulomatous disease, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and lung nodules.

RESULTS

The technique provided diagnostic-quality images, and image quality was maintained with a slight loss in SNR for simulated scan times down to 4 min. Parenchymal apparent SNR was 4.33 ± 0.57, 5.96 ± 0.65, 7.36 ± 0.64, and 7.87 ± 0.65 using iCoMoCo with scan times of 2, 4, 6, and 8 min, respectively. Image sharpness at the diaphragm was comparable between iCoMoCo and reference images. Concomitant field corrections visibly improved the sharpness of anatomical structures away from the isocenter. Inline image reconstruction and artifact correction were achieved in <5 min.

CONCLUSION

The proposed iCoMoCo pulmonary imaging technique can generate diagnostic quality images with 1.75 mm isotropic resolution in less than 5 min using a 6-min acquisition, on a 0.55 T scanner.

Speech production real-time MRI at 0.55 T

PURPOSE

To demonstrate speech-production real-time MRI (RT-MRI) using a contemporary 0.55T system, and to identify opportunities for improved performance compared with conventional field strengths.

METHODS

Experiments were performed on healthy adult volunteers using a 0.55T MRI system with high-performance gradients and a custom 8-channel upper airway coil. Imaging was performed using spiral-based balanced SSFP and gradient-recalled echo (GRE) pulse sequences using a temporal finite-difference constrained reconstruction. Speech-production RT-MRI was performed with three spiral readout durations (8.90, 5.58, and 3.48 ms) to determine trade-offs with respect to articulator contrast, blurring, banding artifacts, and overall image quality.

RESULTS

Both spiral GRE and bSSFP captured tongue boundary dynamics during rapid consonant-vowel syllables. Although bSSFP provided substantially higher SNR in all vocal tract articulators than GRE, it suffered from banding artifacts at TR > 10.9 ms. Spiral bSSFP with the shortest readout duration (3.48 ms, TR = 5.30 ms) had the best image quality, with a 1.54-times boost in SNR compared with an equivalent GRE sequence. Longer readout durations led to increased SNR efficiency and blurring in both bSSFP and GRE.

CONCLUSION

High-performance 0.55T MRI systems can be used for speech-production RT-MRI. Spiral bSSFP can be used without suffering from banding artifacts in vocal tract articulators, provide better SNR efficiency, and have better image quality than what is typically achieved at 1.5 T or 3 T.

A flexible 16-channel custom coil array for accelerated imaging of upper and infraglottic airway at 3 T

PURPOSE

To develop a custom coil and evaluate its utility for accelerated upper and infraglottic airway MRI at 3 T.

METHODS

A 16-channel flexible and anatomy-conforming coil was developed to provide localized sensitivity over upper and infraglottic airway regions of interest. Parallel-imaging capabilities were compared against existing head and head-neck coils. SENSE geometry factor losses were quantified for retrospectively accelerating 3D MRI. Blinded image-quality ratings from two experts were performed. Spiral GRAPPA reconstructions were evaluated for a speaking task at a time resolution of 40 ms. Contrast-to-noise ratios between air and tissue at key landmarks along the vocal tract were compared. SENSE imaging with the custom coil in the lateral recumbent posture was evaluated. Multislice imaging was performed to image swallowing at 17 ms/frame via constrained reconstruction.

RESULTS

The custom coil showed improved SENSE imaging up to 3-fold acceleration when accelerated along either the anterior-posterior or the superior-inferior direction and a net 4-fold acceleration when accelerated along both directions. Spiral GRAPPA reconstructions with the custom coil showed higher contrast-to-noise ratio when compared with existing coils. In the lateral posture, robust SENSE imaging was achieved at up to 2-fold and 3-fold acceleration levels in the superior-inferior and anterior-posterior directions, respectively. Key events of swallowing in the multislice dynamic images were identified by an otolaryngologist.

CONCLUSION

The coil provided improved parallel imaging of upper and infraglottic airway in both supine and lateral recumbent postures. It enabled efficient accelerated dynamic imaging of speaking and swallowing.

Off-resonance artifact correction for MRI: A review

In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), inhomogeneity in the main magnetic field used for imaging, referred to as off-resonance, can lead to image artifacts ranging from mild to severe depending on the application. Off-resonance artifacts, such as signal loss, geometric distortions, and blurring, can compromise the clinical and scientific utility of MR images. In this review, we describe sources of off-resonance in MRI, how off-resonance affects images, and strategies to prevent and correct for off-resonance. Given recent advances and the great potential of low-field and/or portable MRI, we also highlight the advantages and challenges of imaging at low field with respect to off-resonance.

Evaluation of a novel 8-channel RX coil for speech production MRI at 0.55 T

OBJECTIVE

Speech production MRI benefits from lower magnetic fields due to reduced off-resonance effects at air-tissue interfaces and from the use of dedicated receiver coils due to higher SNR and parallel imaging capability. Here we present a custom designed upper airway coil for ¹H imaging at 0.55 Tesla and evaluate its performance in comparison with a vendor-provided prototype 16-channel head/neck coil.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four adult volunteers were scanned with both custom speech and prototype head-neck coils. We evaluated SNR gains of each of the coils over eleven upper airway volumes-of-interest measured relative to the integrated body coil. We evaluated parallel imaging performance of both coils by computing g-factors for SENSE reconstruction of uniform and variable density Cartesian sampling schemes with R = 2, 3, and 4.

RESULTS

The dedicated coil shows approximately 3.5-fold SNR efficiency compared to the head-neck coil. For R = 2 and 3, both uniform and variable density samplings have g-factor values below 1.1 in the upper airway region. For R = 4, g-factor values are higher for both trajectories.

DISCUSSION

The dedicated coil configuration allows for a significant SNR gain over the head-neck coil in the articulators. This, along with favorable g values, makes the coil useful in speech production MRI.

Variation in compensatory strategies as a function of target constriction degree in post-glossectomy speech

Individuals who have undergone treatment for oral cancer oftentimes exhibit compensatory behavior in consonant production. This pilot study investigates whether compensatory mechanisms utilized in the production of speech sounds with a given target constriction location vary systematically depending on target manner of articulation. The data reveal that compensatory strategies used to produce target alveolar segments vary systematically as a function of target manner of articulation in subtle yet meaningful ways. When target constriction degree at a particular constriction location cannot be preserved, individuals may leverage their ability to finely modulate constriction degree at multiple constriction locations along the vocal tract.

Real-Time Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (RT-MRI) allows for imaging dynamic processes as they occur, without relying on any repetition or synchronization. This is made possible by modern MRI technology such as fast-switching gradients and parallel imaging. It is compatible with many (but not all) MRI sequences, including spoiled gradient echo, balanced steady-state free precession, and single-shot rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement. RT-MRI has earned an important role in both diagnostic imaging and image guidance of invasive procedures. Its unique diagnostic value is prominent in areas of the body that undergo substantial and often irregular motion, such as the heart, gastrointestinal system, upper airway vocal tract, and joints. Its value in interventional procedure guidance is prominent for procedures that require multiple forms of soft-tissue contrast, as well as flow information. In this review, we discuss the history of RT-MRI, fundamental tradeoffs, enabling technology, established applications, and current trends. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 5 TECHNICAL EFFICACY STAGE: 1.

Self-gated 3D stack-of-spirals UTE pulmonary imaging at 0.55T

PURPOSE

To develop an isotropic high-resolution stack-of-spirals UTE sequence for pulmonary imaging at 0.55 Tesla by leveraging a combination of robust respiratory-binning, trajectory correction, and concomitant-field corrections.

METHODS

A stack-of-spirals golden-angle UTE sequence was used to continuously acquire data for 15.5 minutes. The data was binned to a stable respiratory phase based on superoinferior readout self-navigator signals. Corrections for trajectory errors and concomitant field artifacts, along with image reconstruction with conjugate gradient SENSE, were performed inline within the Gadgetron framework. Finally, data were retrospectively reconstructed to simulate scan times of 5, 8.5, and 12 minutes. Image quality was assessed using signal-to-noise, image sharpness, and qualitative reader scores. The technique was evaluated in healthy volunteers, patients with coronavirus disease 2019 infection, and patients with lung nodules.

RESULTS

The technique provided diagnostic quality images with parenchymal lung SNR of 3.18 ± 0.0.60, 4.57 ± 0.87, 5.45 ± 1.02, and 5.89 ± 1.28 for scan times of 5, 8.5, 12, and 15.5 minutes, respectively. The respiratory binning technique resulted in significantly sharper images (p < 0.001) as measured with relative maximum derivative at the diaphragm. Concomitant field corrections visibly improved sharpness of anatomical structures away from iso-center. The image quality was maintained with a slight loss in SNR for simulated scan times down to 8.5 minutes. Inline image reconstruction and artifact correction were achieved in <5 minutes.

CONCLUSION

The proposed pulmonary imaging technique combined efficient stack-of-spirals imaging with robust respiratory binning, concomitant field correction, and trajectory correction to generate diagnostic quality images with 1.75 mm isotropic resolution in 8.5 minutes on a high-performance 0.55 Tesla system.

Dynamic MRI of swallowing: real-time volumetric imaging at 12 frames per second at 3 T

Objective

Dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing is a potentially hazardous clinical problem that needs regular monitoring. Real-time 2D MRI of swallowing is a promising radiation-free alternative to the current clinical standard: videofluoroscopy. However, aspiration may be missed if it occurs outside this single imaged slice. We therefore aimed to image swallowing in 3D real time at 12 frames per second (fps).

Materials and methods

At 3 T, three 3D real-time MRI acquisition approaches were compared to the 2D acquisition: an aligned stack-of-stars (SOS), and a rotated SOS with a golden-angle increment and with a tiny golden-angle increment. The optimal 3D acquisition was determined by computer simulations and phantom scans. Subsequently, five healthy volunteers were scanned and swallowing parameters were measured.

Results

Although the rotated SOS approaches resulted in better image quality in simulations, in practice, the aligned SOS performed best due to the limited number of slices. The four swallowing phases could be distinguished in 3D real-time MRI, even though the spatial blurring was stronger than in 2D. The swallowing parameters were similar between 2 and 3D.

Conclusion

At a spatial resolution of 2-by-2-by-6 mm with seven slices, swallowing can be imaged in 3D real time at a frame rate of 12 fps.

A multispeaker dataset of raw and reconstructed speech production real-time MRI video and 3D volumetric images

Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (RT-MRI) of human speech production is enabling significant advances in speech science, linguistics, bio-inspired speech technology development, and clinical applications. Easy access to RT-MRI is however limited, and comprehensive datasets with broad access are needed to catalyze research across numerous domains. The imaging of the rapidly moving articulators and dynamic airway shaping during speech demands high spatio-temporal resolution and robust reconstruction methods. Further, while reconstructed images have been published, to-date there is no open dataset providing raw multi-coil RT-MRI data from an optimized speech production experimental setup. Such datasets could enable new and improved methods for dynamic image reconstruction, artifact correction, feature extraction, and direct extraction of linguistically-relevant biomarkers. The present dataset offers a unique corpus of 2D sagittal-view RT-MRI videos along with synchronized audio for 75 participants performing linguistically motivated speech tasks, alongside the corresponding public domain raw RT-MRI data. The dataset also includes 3D volumetric vocal tract MRI during sustained speech sounds and high-resolution static anatomical T2-weighted upper airway MRI for each participant.

Complexity of vocal tract shaping in glossectomy patients and typical speakers: A principal component analysis

The glossectomy procedure, involving surgical resection of cancerous lingual tissue, has long been observed to affect speech production. This study aims to quantitatively index and compare complexity of vocal tract shaping due to lingual movement in individuals who have undergone glossectomy and typical speakers using real-time magnetic resonance imaging data and Principal Component Analysis. The data reveal that (i) the type of glossectomy undergone largely predicts the patterns in vocal tract shaping observed, (ii) gross forward and backward motion of the tongue body accounts for more change in vocal tract shaping than do subtler movements of the tongue (e.g., tongue tip constrictions) in patient data, and (iii) fewer vocal tract shaping components are required to account for the patients' speech data than typical speech data, suggesting that the patient data at hand exhibit less complex vocal tract shaping in the midsagittal plane than do the data from the typical speakers observed.

Real-time dynamic vocal tract imaging using an accelerated spiral GRE sequence and low rank plus sparse reconstruction

PURPOSE

To develop a real-time dynamic vocal tract imaging method using an accelerated spiral GRE sequence and low rank plus sparse reconstruction.

METHODS

Spiral k-space sampling has high data acquisition efficiency and thus is suited for real-time dynamic imaging; further acceleration can be achieved by undersampling k-space and using a model-based reconstruction. Low rank plus sparse reconstruction is a promising method with fast computation and increased robustness to global signal changes and bulk motion, as the images are decomposed into low rank and sparse terms representing different dynamic components. However, the combination with spiral scanning has not been well studied. In this study an accelerated spiral GRE sequence was developed with an optimized low rank plus sparse reconstruction and compared with L1-SPIRiT and XD-GRASP methods. The off-resonance was also corrected using a Chebyshev approximation method to reduce blurring on a frame-by-frame basis.

RESULTS

The low rank plus sparse reconstruction method is sensitive to the weights of the low rank and sparse terms. The optimized reconstruction showed advantages over other methods with reduced aliasing and improved SNR. With the proposed method, spatial resolution of 1.3*1.3 mm² with 150 mm field-of-view (FOV) and temporal resolution of 30 frames-per-second (fps) was achieved with good image quality. Blurring was reduced using the Chebyshev approximation method.

CONCLUSION

This work studies low rank plus sparse reconstruction using the spiral trajectory and demonstrates a new method for dynamic vocal tract imaging which can benefit studies of speech disorders.

Aliasing artifact reduction in spiral real-time MRI

PURPOSE

To mitigate a common artifact in spiral real-time MRI, caused by aliasing of signal outside the desired FOV. This artifact frequently occurs in midsagittal speech real-time MRI.

METHODS

Simulations were performed to determine the likely origin of the artifact. Two methods to mitigate the artifact are proposed. The first approach, denoted as "large FOV" (LF), keeps an FOV that is large enough to include the artifact signal source during reconstruction. The second approach, denoted as "estimation-subtraction" (ES), estimates the artifact signal source before subtracting a synthetic signal representing that source in multicoil k-space raw data. Twenty-five midsagittal speech-production real-time MRI data sets were used to evaluate both of the proposed methods. Reconstructions without and with corrections were evaluated by two expert readers using a 5-level Likert scale assessing artifact severity. Reconstruction time was also compared.

RESULTS

The origin of the artifact was found to be a combination of gradient nonlinearity and imperfect anti-aliasing in spiral sampling. The LF and ES methods were both able to substantially reduce the artifact, with an averaged qualitative score improvement of 1.25 and 1.35 Likert levels for LF correction and ES correction, respectively. Average reconstruction time without correction, with LF correction, and with ES correction were 160.69 ± 1.56, 526.43 ± 5.17, and 171.47 ± 1.71 ms/frame.

CONCLUSION

Both proposed methods were able to reduce the spiral aliasing artifacts, with the ES-reduction method being more effective and more time efficient.

Improved 3D real-time MRI of speech production

PURPOSE

To provide 3D real-time MRI of speech production with improved spatio-temporal sharpness using randomized, variable-density, stack-of-spiral sampling combined with a 3D spatio-temporally constrained reconstruction.

METHODS

We evaluated five candidate (k, t) sampling strategies using a previously proposed gradient-echo stack-of-spiral sequence and a 3D constrained reconstruction with spatial and temporal penalties. Regularization parameters were chosen by expert readers based on qualitative assessment. We experimentally determined the effect of spiral angle increment and k_z temporal order. The strategy yielding highest image quality was chosen as the proposed method. We evaluated the proposed and original 3D real-time MRI methods in 2 healthy subjects performing speech production tasks that invoke rapid movements of articulators seen in multiple planes, using interleaved 2D real-time MRI as the reference. We quantitatively evaluated tongue boundary sharpness in three locations at two speech rates.

RESULTS

The proposed data-sampling scheme uses a golden-angle spiral increment in the k_x -k_y plane and variable-density, randomized encoding along k_z . It provided a statistically significant improvement in tongue boundary sharpness score (P < .001) in the blade, body, and root of the tongue during normal and 1.5-times speeded speech. Qualitative improvements were substantial during natural speech tasks of alternating high, low tongue postures during vowels. The proposed method was also able to capture complex tongue shapes during fast alveolar consonant segments. Furthermore, the proposed scheme allows flexible retrospective selection of temporal resolution.

CONCLUSION

We have demonstrated improved 3D real-time MRI of speech production using randomized, variable-density, stack-of-spiral sampling with a 3D spatio-temporally constrained reconstruction.

Deblurring for spiral real-time MRI using convolutional neural networks

PURPOSE

To develop and evaluate a fast and effective method for deblurring spiral real-time MRI (RT-MRI) using convolutional neural networks.

METHODS

We demonstrate a 3-layer residual convolutional neural networks to correct image domain off-resonance artifacts in speech production spiral RT-MRI without the knowledge of field maps. The architecture is motivated by the traditional deblurring approaches. Spatially varying off-resonance blur is synthetically generated by using discrete object approximation and field maps with data augmentation from a large database of 2D human speech production RT-MRI. The effect of off-resonance range, shift-invariance of blur, and readout durations on deblurring performance are investigated. The proposed method is validated using synthetic and real data with longer readouts, quantitatively using image quality metrics and qualitatively via visual inspection, and with a comparison to conventional deblurring methods.

RESULTS

Deblurring performance was found superior to a current autocalibrated method for in vivo data and only slightly worse than an ideal reconstruction with perfect knowledge of the field map for synthetic test data. Convolutional neural networks deblurring made it possible to visualize articulator boundaries with readouts up to 8 ms at 1.5 T, which is 3-fold longer than the current standard practice. The computation time was 12.3 ± 2.2 ms per frame, enabling low-latency processing for RT-MRI applications.

CONCLUSION

Convolutional neural networks deblurring is a practical, efficient, and field map-free approach for the deblurring of spiral RT-MRI. In the context of speech production imaging, this can enable 1.7-fold improvement in scan efficiency and the use of spiral readouts at higher field strengths such as 3 T.

Realistic Dynamic Numerical Phantom for MRI of the Upper Vocal Tract

Dynamic and real-time MRI (rtMRI) of human speech is an active field of research, with interest from both the linguistics and clinical communities. At present, different research groups are investigating a range of rtMRI acquisition and reconstruction approaches to visualise the speech organs. Similar to other moving organs, it is difficult to create a physical phantom of the speech organs to optimise these approaches; therefore, the optimisation requires extensive scanner access and imaging of volunteers. As previously demonstrated in cardiac imaging, realistic numerical phantoms can be useful tools for optimising rtMRI approaches and reduce reliance on scanner access and imaging volunteers. However, currently, no such speech rtMRI phantom exists. In this work, a numerical phantom for optimising speech rtMRI approaches was developed and tested on different reconstruction schemes. The novel phantom comprised a dynamic image series and corresponding k-space data of a single mid-sagittal slice with a temporal resolution of 30 frames per second (fps). The phantom was developed based on images of a volunteer acquired at a frame rate of 10 fps. The creation of the numerical phantom involved the following steps: image acquisition, image enhancement, segmentation, mask optimisation, through-time and spatial interpolation and finally the derived k-space phantom. The phantom was used to: (1) test different k-space sampling schemes (Cartesian, radial and spiral); (2) create lower frame rate acquisitions by simulating segmented k-space acquisitions; (3) simulate parallel imaging reconstructions (SENSE and GRAPPA). This demonstrated how such a numerical phantom could be used to optimise images and test multiple sampling strategies without extensive scanner access.

Improved real-time tagged MRI using REALTAG

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate a novel method for real-time tagged MRI with increased tag persistence using phase sensitive tagging (REALTAG), demonstrated for speech imaging.

METHODS

Tagging is applied as a brief interruption to a continuous real-time spiral acquisition. REALTAG is implemented using a total tagging flip angle of 180° and a novel frame-by-frame phase sensitive reconstruction to remove smooth background phase while preserving the sign of the tag lines. Tag contrast-to-noise ratio of REALTAG and conventional tagging (total flip angle of 90°) is simulated and evaluated in vivo. The ability to extend tag persistence is tested during the production of vowel-to-vowel transitions by American English speakers.

RESULTS

REALTAG resulted in a doubling of contrast-to-noise ratio at each time point and increased tag persistence by more than 1.9-fold. The tag persistence was 1150 ms with contrast-to-noise ratio >6 at 1.5T, providing 2 mm in-plane resolution, 179 frames/s, with 72.6 ms temporal window width, and phase sensitive reconstruction. The new imaging window is able to capture internal tongue deformation over word-to-word transitions in natural speech production.

CONCLUSION

Tag persistence is substantially increased in intermittently tagged real-time MRI by using the improved REALTAG method. This makes it possible to capture longer motion patterns in the tongue, such as cross-word vowel-to-vowel transitions, and provides a powerful new window to study tongue biomechanics.

Comparison of contrast-enhanced videofluoroscopy to unenhanced dynamic MRI in minor patients following surgical correction of velopharyngeal dysfunction

OBJECTIVES

To compare dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with videofluoroscopy (VFS) regarding image quality and assessment of gap size between soft palate (SP) and posterior pharyngeal wall (PPW) in children and adolescents following surgical correction of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD).

METHODS

Twenty-one patients undergoing unenhanced 3-T MRI and contrast-enhanced VFS were included in this IRB-approved prospective study. The MRI scan protocol comprised refocused gradient-echo sequences in transverse and sagittal planes during speech, with TE 1.97 ms, TR 3.95 ms, flip angle 8°, matrix size 128 × 128, and 5-mm slice thickness. Radial k-space sampling and sliding window reconstruction were used to achieve an image acquisition rate of 28 frames per second (fps). VFS with 30 fps was similarly performed in both planes. Closure of the velopharyngeal port during phonation was evaluated by two experienced radiologists.

RESULTS

Eleven (52.4%) patients displayed a complete closure, whereas ten (47.6%) patients showed a post-operative gap during speech. VFS and MRI equally identified the cases with persistent or recurrent VPD. Differences in SP-PPW distance between VFS (3.9 ± 1.6 mm) and MRI (4.1 ± 1.5 mm) were not statistically significant (p = 0.5). The subjective overall image quality of MRI was rated inferior (p < 0.001) compared with VFS, with almost perfect inter-rater agreement (κ = 0.90). The presence of susceptibility artifacts did not limit anatomical measurements.

CONCLUSION

Dynamic MRI is equally reliable as VFS to assess persistent or recurrent inadequate velum closure in patients following surgical treatment of VPD.

Opportunities in Interventional and Diagnostic Imaging by Using High-Performance Low-Field-Strength MRI

Background Commercial low-field-strength MRI systems are generally not equipped with state-of-the-art MRI hardware, and are not suitable for demanding imaging techniques. An MRI system was developed that combines low field strength (0.55 T) with high-performance imaging technology. Purpose To evaluate applications of a high-performance low-field-strength MRI system, specifically MRI-guided cardiovascular catheterizations with metallic devices, diagnostic imaging in high-susceptibility regions, and efficient image acquisition strategies. Materials and Methods A commercial 1.5-T MRI system was modified to operate at 0.55 T while maintaining high-performance hardware, shielded gradients (45 mT/m; 200 T/m/sec), and advanced imaging methods. MRI was performed between January 2018 and April 2019. T1, T2, and T2* were measured at 0.55 T; relaxivity of exogenous contrast agents was measured; and clinical applications advantageous at low field were evaluated. Results There were 83 0.55-T MRI examinations performed in study participants (45 women; mean age, 34 years ± 13). On average, T1 was 32% shorter, T2 was 26% longer, and T2* was 40% longer at 0.55 T compared with 1.5 T. Nine metallic interventional devices were found to be intrinsically safe at 0.55 T (<1°C heating) and MRI-guided right heart catheterization was performed in seven study participants with commercial metallic guidewires. Compared with 1.5 T, reduced image distortion was shown in lungs, upper airway, cranial sinuses, and intestines because of improved field homogeneity. Oxygen inhalation generated lung signal enhancement of 19% ± 11 (standard deviation) at 0.55 T compared with 7.6% ± 6.3 at 1.5 T (P = .02; five participants) because of the increased T1 relaxivity of oxygen (4.7e-4 mmHg-1sec-1). Efficient spiral image acquisitions were amenable to low field strength and generated increased signal-to-noise ratio compared with Cartesian acquisitions (P < .02). Representative imaging of the brain, spine, abdomen, and heart generated good image quality with this system. Conclusion This initial study suggests that high-performance low-field-strength MRI offers advantages for MRI-guided catheterizations with metal devices, MRI in high-susceptibility regions, and efficient imaging. © RSNA, 2019 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Intermittently tagged real-time MRI reveals internal tongue motion during speech production

PURPOSE

To demonstrate a tagging method compatible with RT-MRI for the study of speech production.

METHODS

Tagging is applied as a brief interruption to a continuous real-time spiral acquisition. Tagging can be initiated manually by the operator, cued to the speech stimulus, or be automatically applied with a fixed frequency. We use a standard 2D 1-3-3-1 binomial SPAtial Modulation of Magnetization (SPAMM) sequence with 1 cm spacing in both in-plane directions. Tag persistence in tongue muscle is simulated and validated in vivo. The ability to capture internal tongue deformations is tested during speech production of American English diphthongs in native speakers.

RESULTS

We achieved an imaging window of 650-800 ms at 1.5T, with imaging signal to noise ratio ≥ 17 and tag contrast to noise ratio ≥ 5 in human tongue, providing 36 frames/s temporal resolution and 2 mm in-plane spatial resolution with real-time interactive acquisition and view-sharing reconstruction. The proposed method was able to capture tongue motion patterns and their relative timing with adequate spatiotemporal resolution during the production of American English diphthongs and consonants.

CONCLUSION

Intermittent tagging during real-time MRI of speech production is able to reveal the internal deformations of the tongue. This capability will allow new investigations of valuable spatiotemporal information on the biomechanics of the lingual subsystems during speech without reliance on binning speech utterance repetition.

A multifunction digital receiver suitable for real-time frequency detection and compensation in fast magnetic resonance imaging

We describe the development and implementation of a multifunction digital receiver suitable for magnetic resonance imaging with capability of real-time frequency detection and compensation. The digital receiver consists primarily of firmware modules that combine the functionalities of signal acquisition, frequency detection and compensation, and data correction and image reconstruction. The receiver was developed based on a single multiple-input multiple-output radio-frequency electronic board equipped with a reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. A simple and practical algorithm was developed and implemented on the FPGA to accelerate the data processing for frequency determination. The simplified frequency detection and the higher system integration enable the receiver to reduce dramatically the time for frequency detection and compensation. With this receiver, we are able to detect the frequency of short-duration signals in the bandwidth of 10 MHz centered at 400 MHz within 75 ns after the signal acquisition. We describe the designs of the key FPGA modules and how these modules integrate into a multifunction receiver. We also present testing data that validate the simplified algorithm for frequency determination, demonstrate frequency detection and compensation, and demonstrate how real-time data correction is performed during image acquisition and reconstruction.

3D dynamic MRI of the vocal tract during natural speech

PURPOSE

To develop and evaluate a technique for 3D dynamic MRI of the full vocal tract at high temporal resolution during natural speech.

METHODS

We demonstrate 2.4 × 2.4 × 5.8 mm³ spatial resolution, 61-ms temporal resolution, and a 200 × 200 × 70 mm³ FOV. The proposed method uses 3D gradient-echo imaging with a custom upper-airway coil, a minimum-phase slab excitation, stack-of-spirals readout, pseudo golden-angle view order in k_x -k_y , linear Cartesian order along k_z , and spatiotemporal finite difference constrained reconstruction, with 13-fold acceleration. This technique is evaluated using in vivo vocal tract airway data from 2 healthy subjects acquired at 1.5T scanner, 1 with synchronized audio, with 2 tasks during production of natural speech, and via comparison with interleaved multislice 2D dynamic MRI.

RESULTS

This technique captured known dynamics of vocal tract articulators during natural speech tasks including tongue gestures during the production of consonants "s" and "l" and of consonant-vowel syllables, and was additionally consistent with 2D dynamic MRI. Coordination of lingual (tongue) movements for consonants is demonstrated via volume-of-interest analysis. Vocal tract area function dynamics revealed critical lingual constriction events along the length of the vocal tract for consonants and vowels.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrate feasibility of 3D dynamic MRI of the full vocal tract, with spatiotemporal resolution adequate to visualize lingual movements for consonants and vocal tact shaping during natural productions of consonant-vowel syllables, without requiring multiple repetitions.
