Characterization of Effects of Compressed Sensing on High Spectral and Spatial Resolution (HiSS) MRI with Comparison to SENSE

High Spectral and Spatial resolution (HiSS) MRI shows high diagnostic performance in the breast. Acceleration methods based on k-space undersampling could allow stronger T2*-based image contrast and/or higher spectral resolution, potentially increasing diagnostic performance. An agar/oil phantom was prepared with water-fat boundaries perpendicular to the readout and phase encoding directions in a breast coil. HiSS MRI was acquired at 3T, at sensitivity encoding (SENSE) acceleration factors R of up to 10, and the R = 1 dataset was used to simulate corresponding compressed sensing (CS) accelerations. Image quality was evaluated by quantifying noise and artifact levels. Effective spatial resolution was determined via modulation transfer function analysis. Dispersion vs. absorption (DISPA) analysis and full width at half maximum (FWHM) quantified spectral lineshape changes. Noise levels remained constant with R for CS but amplified with SENSE. SENSE preserved the spatial resolution of HiSS MRI, while CS reduced it in the phase encoding direction. SENSE showed no effect on FWHM or DISPA markers, while CS increased FWHM. Thus, CS might perform better in noise-limited or geometrically constrained applications, but in geometric configurations specific to breast MRI, spectral analysis might be compromised, decreasing the diagnostic performance of HiSS MRI.

Information theoretic evaluation of Lorentzian, Gaussian, Voigt, and symmetric alpha-stable models of reversible transverse relaxation in cervical cancer in vivo at 3 T

OBJECTS

To better characterize cervical cancer at 3 T. MRI transverse relaxation patterns hold valuable biophysical information about cellular scale microstructure. Lorentzian modeling is typically used to represent intravoxel frequency distributions, resulting in mono-exponential decay of reversible transverse relaxation. However, deviations from mono-exponential decay are expected theoretically and observed experimentally.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We compared the information content of four models of signal attenuation with reversible transverse relaxation. Biological phantoms and six women with cervical squamous cell carcinoma were imaged using a gradient-echo sampling of the spin-echo (GESSE) sequence. Lorentzian, Gaussian, Voigt, and Symmetric α-Stable (SAS) models were ranked using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC), and the model retaining the highest information content was identified at each voxel as the best model.

RESULTS

The Lorentzian model resulted in information loss in large fractions of the phantoms and cervix. Gaussian and SAS models frequently had higher information content than the Lorentzian in much of the areas of interest. The Voigt model rarely surpassed the three other models in terms of information content.

DISCUSSION

Gaussian and SAS models provide better fitting of data in much of the human cervix at 3 T. Minimizing information loss through improved tissue modeling may have important implications for identifying reliable biomarkers of tumor hypoxia and iron deposition.

Emerging MR methods for improved diagnosis of prostate cancer by multiparametric MRI

Current challenges of using serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level-based screening, such as the increased false positive rate, inability to detect clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) with random biopsy, multifocality in PCa, and the molecular heterogeneity of PCa, can be addressed by integrating advanced multiparametric MR imaging (mpMRI) approaches into the diagnostic workup of PCa. The standard method for diagnosing PCa is a transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)-guided systematic prostate biopsy, but it suffers from sampling errors and frequently fails to detect clinically significant PCa. mpMRI not only increases the detection of clinically significant PCa, but it also helps to reduce unnecessary biopsies because of its high negative predictive value. Furthermore, non-Cartesian image acquisition and compressed sensing have resulted in faster MR acquisition with improved signal-to-noise ratio, which can be used in quantitative MRI methods such as dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI. With the growing emphasis on the role of pre-biopsy mpMRI in the evaluation of PCa, there is an increased demand for innovative MRI methods that can improve PCa grading, detect clinically significant PCa, and biopsy guidance. To meet these demands, in addition to routine T1-weighted, T2-weighted, DCE-MRI, diffusion MRI, and MR spectroscopy, several new MR methods such as restriction spectrum imaging, vascular, extracellular, and restricted diffusion for cytometry in tumors (VERDICT) method, hybrid multi-dimensional MRI, luminal water imaging, and MR fingerprinting have been developed for a better characterization of the disease. Further, with the increasing interest in combining MR data with clinical and genomic data, there is a growing interest in utilizing radiomics and radiogenomics approaches. These big data can also be utilized in the development of computer-aided diagnostic tools, including automatic segmentation and the detection of clinically significant PCa using machine learning methods.
