Research ability and research motivation of postgraduate nursing students in traditional Chinese medicine colleges

Correlations among positive psychological capital, research motivation, and research ability by master's degree nursing students: A structural equation modeling

BACKGROUND

Nursing research ability is an important force in improving the quality of nursing care and driving the development of the discipline. As the main force and reserve force of nursing research, master's degree nursing students should have certain research ability. The contributing factors and their relationships that challenge research ability among master's degree nursing students must be fully understood, as this level of knowledge can support the development of strategies and interventions that improve the research ability of master's degree nursing students.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among positive psychological capital, research motivation, and research ability by master's degree nursing students. In addition, we investigated whether research motivation mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability.

DESIGN

A descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire.

SETTING

The study sampled master's degree nursing students from colleges in Sichuan, Fujian, Hubei, and Tianjin Province, China.

PARTICIPANTS

From February 2022 to April 2022, 377 master's degree nursing students were chosen by a convenience sample method.

METHODS

Data were gathered using a general information questionnaire, the Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PPCQ), the Research Motivation Scale (RMS), and the Nursing Research Ability of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (NRASQ). Both SPSS 26.0 and Amos 28.0. were used to handle and analyze the data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were all used in the data analysis process. The reporting followed the STROBE checklist.

RESULTS

Positive psychological capital was found to be positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01). Research motivation was also positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01), and had a mediating effect on the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The positive psychological capital and research motivation of master's degree nursing students are positively correlated with research ability. Research motivation significantly mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability. The findings of this study can inform educational strategies and interventions for the development of research ability of master's degree nursing students.

Nursing teachers' job burnout and teaching ability: The mediating role of social support based on the Person-Context interaction theory

BACKGROUND

Great attention has been attached to the quality of nursing along with the development of medical treatment, which gives rise to the higher demand for colleges to cultivate high-quality nursing students, as well as the higher standard for teaching performance of the nursing faculty.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the effect of teachers' job burnout on teaching ability among nursing teachers in Chinese colleges and to examine the mediating role of social support in this relationship based on the Person-context interaction theory.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional descriptive design has been adopted.

METHODS

From February to June 2021, a total of 416 Chinese nursing teachers from 27 colleges filled out the questionnaires with a response rate of 97.42%. The questionnaire included general demographic questionnaire, teaching ability in nursing scale, teacher burnout scale and social support scale. The data were analyzed by SPSS26.0 statistical software in terms of Pearson's correlation the Structural Equation Model (SEM) was adopted to test the mediating effect of social support between job burnout and teaching ability in nursing of nursing teachers using Mplus 8.3.

RESULTS

Job burnout of nursing teachers was negatively and significantly correlated with the teaching ability in nursing and social support (p < 0.01). And Structural Equation Model results showed that social support mediated the relationship between teacher burnout and teaching ability in nursing.

CONCLUSIONS

Social support could help nursing teachers manage their job burnout, and eventually help them overcome the negative impact of teachers' job burnout on teaching ability in nursing. Social support could promote the teaching ability of nursing teachers by playing an intermediary role between them.[Box: see text].

Moderating effect of organizational climate on the relationship between research motivation and learning engagement among nurses taking part-time master's program: A cross-sectional study

AIMS

To investigate the moderating effects of perceived organizational climate on the relationship between research motivation and learning engagement in research among nurses pursuing a part-time master's degree.

BACKGROUND

Research motivation positively affects learning engagement in research. However, the role of perceived organizational climate has not been explored in nurses taking part-time master's program in China. This study examined the relationships between various types of research motivation and learning engagement in research and whether the perceived organizational climate moderates the relationship between the other variables.

METHODS

This cross-sectional one-center study was performed on 230 nurses by assessing learning engagement in research, research motivation and perceived organizational climate.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants was 31.3 ± 3.5 years and 91.3% were female. Participants who had been assigned a supervisor showed higher learning engagement in research than those without a supervisor (3.65 ± 0.60 vs. 3.48 ± 0.61; P < 0.001). Participants who had experience conducting research reported higher learning engagement in research than those with no experience (3.30 ± 0.71 vs. 3.14 ± 0.83; P < 0.05). The mean score of learning engagement in research was 3.39 ± 0.63. The mean scores for intrinsic, extrinsic and failure-avoidance motivation were 3.72 ± 0.61, 3.71 ± 0.71 and 3.43 ± 0.70, respectively. As for perceived organizational climate, the mean score was 122.70 out of 148. Learning engagement in research was significantly positively correlated with intrinsic research motivation, extrinsic research motivation and perceived organizational climate scores (r = 0.441, 0.336, 0.307, p < 0.001, respectively). Perceived organizational climate moderated the correlation between intrinsic and extrinsic research motivation and learning engagement in research.

CONCLUSION

Nurses taking the master's program perceived a higher level of perceived organizational climate could strengthen the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic research motivation and learning engagement in research. More organizational support can enhance learning engagement in research by reinforcing intrinsic and extrinsic research motivation.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

Universities can assign supervisors promptly. Universities and hospitals can provide education about the importance of research in nursing and reinforce their intrinsic and extrinsic research motivation. Hospitals can adjust policies based on the needs of nurses taking the master's program to provide organizational support, to facilitate the research learning process.

Exploring the Attitudes and Perceptions of Master of Medical Education Graduates Towards Research Publication in Saudi Arabia

Introduction

Evidence is lacking to identify what encourages students to conduct research and publish. This study aimed to understand the barriers and facilitators of research and publications from Master of Medical Education student research projects as 15-20% have published their research while 75-80% did not.

Methods

This study used qualitative in-depth interviews with 17 graduates from the previous 13 batches of the Master of Medical Education program, Saudi Arabia. In-depth interviews were conducted with participants by face to face and Zoom, using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were conducted in English, and the recordings were transcribed verbatim. Next, the interview text was read multiple times to familiarize with the data for thematic analysis, where the text was coded inductively. Themes were generated by identifying patterns in the data and merging similar codes. The data were interpreted within the themes and supported with the most relevant quotations.

Results

We identified four distinct but interrelated themes and the first theme, the importance and advantages of conducting research and its publication, explains the participants need to conduct research and publish it to survive and progress in the academic environment. In the second theme, positive experiences of conducting research and its publication, we identify what participants' positive experiences of the research process entail. In the third theme, challenges to conducting research and its publication, we explore the participants' opinions on the barriers to their efforts to undertake and publish their research. In the last theme, facilitators for conducting research and its publication, we summarize various facilitating factors that participants described as necessary to complete the research process successfully to peer-reviewed publication.

Conclusion

Masters' student researchers, especially those with demanding projects, need to be supported by providing them with critical supervision, an enabling environment, technical support, and guidance at each step of the research process.
