Abstract
Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) experiments showed that when aprotic ionic liquids vaporize under pressure and temperature conditions similar to those of a reduced-pressure distillation, the gas phase is composed of discrete anion-cation pairs. The evolution of the mass spectrometric signals recorded during fractional distillations of binary ionic liquid mixtures allowed us to monitor the changes of the gas-phase composition and the relative volatility of the components. In addition, we have studied a protic ionic liquid, and demonstrated that it exists as separated neutral molecules in the gas phase.

Abstract
Recent advances in the understanding of the gas-phase reaction of aromatics with cationic electrophiles in a thermally equilibrated domain are described. The overall substitution reaction is analyzed in terms of its elementary steps. Their contribution to the overall reactivity pattern is dissected by the use of selected systems, which allowed one to highlight the kinetic role of single elementary events. Mechanistic studies have focused on the structure and reactivity of covalent and non-covalent ionic intermediates, which display a rich chemistry and provide benchmark reactivity models. Particular interest has been devoted to proton transfer reactions, which may occur in either an intra- or intermolecular fashion in arenium intermediates. Abstract
Loss of the A ring in the electron-impact mass spectra of the trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of several cholesterol oxidation products is accompanied by intramolecular migration of the 3-O-TMS group to the charge-retaining portion of the molecule. Linked-scan techniques (B/E and B(2)/E) were used to establish the fragmentation processes leading to the formation of the rearrangement ion. The TMS group appears to migrate to heteroatomic sites in the 5-; 6-, or 7-positions of the B ring. This structural assignment is supported by isotopic labeling studies and collision-induced dissociation of the resulting product ion.
