Fundamental Aspects of Stretchable Mechanochromic Materials: Fabrication and Characterization

Mechanochromic materials provide optical changes in response to mechanical stress and are of interest in a wide range of potential applications such as strain sensing, structural health monitoring, and encryption. Advanced manufacturing such as 3D printing enables the fabrication of complex patterns and geometries. In this work, classes of stretchable mechanochromic materials that provide visual color changes when tension is applied, namely, dyes, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, liquid crystal elastomers, cellulose nanocrystals, photonic nanostructures, hydrogels, and hybrid systems (combinations of other classes) are reviewed. For each class, synthesis and processing, as well as the mechanism of color change are discussed. To enable materials selection across the classes, the mechanochromic sensitivity of the different classes of materials are compared. Photonic systems demonstrate high mechanochromic sensitivity (Δnm/% strain), large dynamic color range, and rapid reversibility. Further, the mechanochromic behavior can be predicted using a simple mechanical model. Photonic systems with a wide range of mechanical properties (elastic modulus) have been achieved. The addition of dyes to photonic systems has broadened the dynamic range, i.e., the strain over which there is an optical change. For applications in which irreversible color change is desired, dye-based systems or liquid crystal elastomer systems can be formulated. While many promising applications have been demonstrated, manufacturing uniform color on a large scale remains a challenge. Standardized characterization methods are needed to translate materials to practical applications. The sustainability of mechanochromic materials is also an important consideration.

Fluorescent Ionic Probe for Determination of Mechanical Properties of Healed Poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) Ionomer Films

In recent years, advanced materials with properties resembling biological systems, particularly artificial muscles, have received intense scrutiny. This is because the interesting conformational shape characteristics of such materials have benefited a variety of technologies, including textiles, 3D printing, and medical devices. Although a multitude of shape memory properties have been studied and developed in recent years, self-healing of these polymers after puncture or rupture has also become a major area of study. Most techniques for detection of such processes are mechanically based and require considerable hands-on monitoring. Thus, a rapid visual detection method for self-healing is highly desirable. Herein, we describe fluorescence studies for rapid detection of self-healing properties of a partially neutralized sodium ionomer poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (PEMA). In this study, two different fluorophores, parent non-ionic 4,6-dipyrenylpyrimidine and ionic 4,6-dipyrenylpyrimidinium iodide fluorophores, were evaluated as possible sensors of self-healing. Incorporation of these probes via solution blending and compatibility into a PEMA of these fluorophores were evaluated. Thermal characterizations using differential scanning calorimetry were also performed to elucidate physical characteristics of healed sites. Ratiometric fluorescence emission variations were explored within puncture-healed ionomer films and related to Young's modulus properties with good linearity, indicating potential utility of this approach for monitoring elastic modulus properties after healing has occurred. Further statistical analyses of mechanical processes using quadratic discriminant analysis resulted in development of several highly accurate predictive models for determining time since damage healing.

A Fluorescent Polyurethane with Covalently Cross-Linked Rhodamine Derivatives

Rhodamine derivatives (RDs) with three reactive hydrogens were synthesized and well characterized by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI mass). Then, the obtained RD was covalently cross-linked into polyurethane (PU) matrix through chemical linkages to fabricate a network structure, and the fluorescent properties, mechanical properties, thermal stability, and emulsion particle size were systematically investigated. Results demonstrate that PU-RD maintains initial fluorescent properties and emits desirable yellow fluorescence under ultraviolet irradiation. Moreover, compared with linear PU without fluorescers, PU-RD shows clearly improved mechanical properties and thermal stability, on account of the formed network structures.

Bioinspired Healable Mechanochromic Function from Fluorescent Polyurethane Composite Film

Camouflage and wound healing are two vital functions for cephalopods to survive from dangerous ocean risks. Inspired by these dual functions, herein, we report a new type of healable mechanochromic (HMC) material. The bifunctional HMC material consists of two tightly bonded layers. One layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) for shielding. Another layer contains supramolecular hydrogen bonding polymers and fluorochromes for healing. The as‐synthesized HMC material exhibits a tunable and reversible mechanochromic function due to the strain‐induced surface structure of composite film. The mechanochromic function can be further restored after damage because of the incorporated healable polyurethane. The healing efficiency of the damaged HMC materials can even reach 98 % at 60 °C for 6 h. The bioinspired HMC material is expected to have potential applications in the information encryption and flexible displays.
