Abstract
Surface-tethered poly(ionic liquid) brushes have attracted considerable attention in widespread fields, from bioengineering to marine antifouling. However, their applications have been constrained due to the poor polymerization efficiency and sophisticated operation process. In this work, we efficiently synthesized the poly(ionic liquid) brushes with unparalleled speed (up to 98 nm h-1) through Fe0-mediated surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (Fe0 SI-ATRP) while consuming only microliter of monomer solution under ambient conditions. We also demonstrated that poly(ionic liquid) brushes with gradient thickness and wettability were easily accessible by regulating the distance between the opposite plates of Fe0 SI-ATRP. Moreover, the resultant poly(ionic liquid) brushes presented excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (99.2%) and Bacillus subtilis (88.1%) after 24 h and low attachment for proteins and marine algae (≤5%) for over 2 weeks. This research provided pathways to the facile and controllable fabrication of poly(ionic liquid) materials for marine antifouling applications.

Abstract
The breadth and importance of polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) are steadily expanding, and this review updates advances and trends in syntheses, properties, and applications over the past five to six years. We begin with an historical overview of the genesis and growth of the PIL field as a subset of materials science. The genesis of ionic liquids (ILs) over nano to meso length-scales exhibiting 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D topologies defines colloidal ionic liquids, CILs, which compose a subclass of PILs and provide a synthetic bridge between IL monomers (ILMs) and micro to macro-scale PIL materials. The second focus of this review addresses design and syntheses of ILMs and their polymerization reactions to yield PILs and PIL-based materials. A burgeoning diversity of ILMs reflects increasing use of nonimidazolium nuclei and an expanding use of step-growth chemistries in synthesizing PIL materials. Radical chain polymerization remains a primary method of making PILs and reflects an increasing use of controlled polymerization methods. Step-growth chemistries used in creating some CILs utilize extensive cross-linking. This cross-linking is enabled by incorporating reactive functionalities in CILs and PILs, and some of these CILs and PILs may be viewed as exotic cross-linking agents. The third part of this update focuses upon some advances in key properties, including molecular weight, thermal properties, rheology, ion transport, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness. Glass transitions, critical solution temperatures, and liquidity are key thermal properties that tie to PIL rheology and viscoelasticity. These properties in turn modulate mechanical properties and ion transport, which are foundational in increasing applications of PILs. Cross-linking in gelation and ionogels and reversible step-growth chemistries are essential for self-healing PILs. Stimuli-responsiveness distinguishes PILs from many other classes of polymers, and it emphasizes the importance of segmentally controlling and tuning solvation in CILs and PILs. The fourth part of this review addresses development of applications, and the diverse scope of such applications supports the increasing importance of PILs in materials science. Adhesion applications are supported by ionogel properties, especially cross-linking and solvation tunable interactions with adjacent phases. Antimicrobial and antifouling applications are consequences of the cationic nature of PILs. Similarly, emulsion and dispersion applications rely on tunable solvation of functional groups and on how such groups interact with continuous phases and substrates. Catalysis is another significant application, and this is an historical tie between ILs and PILs. This component also provides a connection to diverse and porous carbon phases templated by PILs that are catalysts or serve as supports for catalysts. Devices, including sensors and actuators, also rely on solvation tuning and stimuli-responsiveness that include photo and electrochemical stimuli. We conclude our view of applications with 3D printing. The largest components of these applications are energy related and include developments for supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, and solar cells. We conclude with our vision of how PIL development will evolve over the next decade.

Abstract
AbstractThe efficiency of admicellar graft polymerization in functionalizing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes was explored. The effect of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) concentration and the absorbed dose was investigated using a simultaneous method of radiation‐induced graft polymerization. The degree of grafting increased with raising the absorbed dose and HEMA concentration. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) peak for C–O stretch and the asymmetric and symmetric stretching of the C–O–C bridge, respectively, proved the presence of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) on the modified PVDF. As the grafting yield increased, rougher surfaces were observed. According to contact angle analysis, the grafted membrane with a higher grafting yield outperformed the low grafting yield membrane in terms of water flux and hydrophilicity.

Abstract
Natural creatures always display unique and charming functions, such as the adhesion of mussels and the lubrication of Nepenthes, to maintain their life activities. Bio-inspired interfacial materials infused with liquid, especially for ionic liquids (ILs), have been designed and prepared to meet the emerging and rising needs of human beings. In this review, we first summarize the recent development of bio-inspired IL-based interfacial materials (BILIMs), ranging from the synthesis strategy to the design principle. Then, we discuss the advanced applications of BILIMs from anti-adhesive aspects (e.g., anti-biofouling, anti-liquid fouling, and anti-solid fouling) to adhesive aspects (e.g., biological sensor, adhesive tape, and wound dressing). Finally, the current limitations and future prospects of BILIMs are provided to feed the actual needs.

Abstract
Membrane fouling limits the rapid development of membrane separations. In this study, a blend membrane containing polycationic liquid (P(BVImBr1-co-PEGMA1)) is presented that can improve the antifouling performance of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. By mixing the polycationic liquid into PVDF, an improved membrane-surface hydrophilicity and enlarged membrane porosity were detected. The water contact angle decreased from 82° to 67°, the porosity enlarged from 7.22% to 89.74%, and the pure water flux improved from 0 to 631.68 L m−2 h−1. The blend membrane surfaces were found to be always positively charged at pH 3~10. By applying the membranes to the filtration of oil/water emulsion and bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution, they showed a very high rejection rate to pollutants in wastewater (99.4% to oil droplets and 85.6% to BSA). The positive membrane surface charge and the increased membrane hydrophilicity resulted in excellent antifouling performance, with the flux recovery rates of the dynamic filtration tests reaching 97.3% and 95.5%, respectively. Moreover, the blend membranes demonstrated very low BSA adhesion and could even kill S. aureus, showing excellent antifouling properties.

Abstract
A thermally responsive hybrid poly(NIPAm-b-BVIm[FcCOO])-rGO composed of block co-polymer poly(NIPAm-b-BVImBr), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and electroactive anions was designed and synthesized to achieve electroactive functionality. It is the polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) segment in the block co-polymer that integrated the three different components into a whole hybrid. Such segment of PILs could not only promote the modification of polar PNIPAm onto the non-polar rGO by cation-π interaction, but also realize the immobilization of ferrocenecarboxylate anion (FcCOO-) via anion-exchange reaction. The PNIPAm moiety endowed the poly(NIPAm-b-BVIm[FcCOO])-rGO with thermal responsiveness, while the anion moiety provided additional electroactive function. It is noteworthy that the conformational change of PNIPAm segment upon different temperature could reveal or seal the redox probe of FcCOO-, thereby leading to a controllable expression of electroactivity switching by thermal stimuli. Owing to such regulation on surface property and conformation of PNIPAm segment, the modified electrode exhibited excellent thermally responsive electrocatalysis with reversible 'ON-OFF' effect toward the detection of ascorbic acid (AA), which led to two different catalytic states at the same electrode. The reversible electrocatalytic performance with switching capability of the poly(NIPAm-b-BVIm[FcCOO])-rGO/GCE is expected to have a broad application in the field of intelligent electrochemical sensors and devices.

Abstract
The nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method for ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fabrication relies on the extensive use of traditional solvents, thus ranking first in terms of ecological impacts among all the membrane fabrication steps. Methyl-5-(dimethylamino)-2-methyl-5-oxopentanoate (PolarClean), as a green solvent, was utilized in this study to fabricate poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) UF membranes. Subsequently, in post-treatment process, zwitterionic polymer, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS), was grafted onto the membrane surface to enhance its anti-fouling properties using a greener surface-initiated activator regenerated by electron transfer-atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET-ATRP) reaction. This novel method used low toxicity chemicals, avoiding the environmental hazards of traditional ATRP, and greatly improving the reaction efficiency. We systematically studied the grafting time effect on the resulted membranes using sodium alginate as the foulant, and found that short grafting time (30 min) achieved excellent membrane performance: pure water permeability of 2872 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, flux recovery ratio of 86.4% after 7-hour fouling test, and foulant rejection of 96.0%. This work discusses for the first time the greener procedures with lower environmental impacts in both fabrication and modification processes of PVC UF membranes.

Abstract
The scope of this work consists in studying the possibility of using the long-lasting antimicrobial poly(ε-caprolactone)/silver-montmorillonite (PCL/Ag-MMT) materials which we have developed in our previous research, as new class of nanocomposite membranes, finding their application in the wastewater treatment. The surface properties of these hybrid membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and contact angle measurements. The SEM results showed that the synthesized membranes exhibited homogeneous sponge microstructures. It was found that the gradual inclusion of nanoparticles (2, 3 and 5 wt. %) into PCL matrix induced a remarkable increase of the membrane thickness. Moreover, these hybrid materials exhibited an enhancement of the surface hydrophilicity attributed to the hydrophilic nature of clay incorporated. The water contact angle of the PCL membrane surface noticeably decreased after the Ag-MMT addition: dropping from 82.60° for PCL 0%Ag-MMT to 64.28° for PCL 5%Ag-MMT membrane. The antimicrobial properties of the membranes were confirmed using Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) as the model bacteria. Quality parameters including total suspended solids (TSS), electric conductivity (EC), nitrates, chlorides, bicarbonates, heavy metals and other trace elements, were determined before and after treatment of real wastewater. A decrease of nitrates by 15.12%, a diminution of sulphates by 45.61% and a removal of 41.38%, 53.57% and61.11% for heavy metals Pb, Zn and Cd respectively indicating clearly that the ultrafiltration process using PCL/AgMMT nanocomposite membranes is an effective way to eliminate the wastewater effluents.

Abstract
New type of carriers based on grafted poly(ionic liquid)s was designed for delivery of ionically attached salicylates (Sal). Choline derived ionic liquid monomeric units were successfully introduced with various content in the side chains by the controlled radical polymerization. Properly high amounts of ionic pharmaceutics in the polymer systems were achieved by the well-fitted length and grafting degree of the side chains. In aqueous solution the graft copolymers were self-assembled into the spherical superstructures with sizes up to 73 nm. Delivery studies showed "burst" release within 4 h, after that it was slower yielding ~70% of released drug within 80 h. Proposed nanocarriers supported low toxicity against human cells (NHDF and BEAS-2B), anti-inflammation activity evaluated with the use of pro-inflammatory interleukins (IL-6 and IL-8) and antibacterial activities towards E. coli. Adjustment of ionic drug content by structural parameters of graft copolymers, including grafting degree and graft length, are advantageous to tailor nanocarriers with self-assembly properties in aqueous media. Effective release process by ionic exchange and biological activity with low toxicity are promising for further development of this type of drug delivery (DDS).
