Shape memory biomaterials prepared from polyurethane/ureas containing sulfated glucose

Synthesis and characterization of amino-functionalized guar gum based polyurea: Preparation of iodine complexes, structural investigation and release studies

Biobased materials are expanding dramatically in various industrial applications due to their unique intrinsic properties. In this study, various chemical functionalization procedures were used to synthesize guar gum, a naturally occurring polysaccharide-based polyurea, and its iodine complexes. Firstly, guar gum was subjected to tosylation reaction using p-toluene sulphonyl chloride to introduce tosyl moieties in the polymer chain with the degree of substitution (DS) ranging between 0.16 and 1.54. Sample having the highest degree of tosyl moiety was further reacted with tris(2-aminoethyl) amine to produce 6-deoxy-6-tris(2-aminoethyl) amine derivative via nucleophilic substitution reaction to impart amino functional groups. The degree of substitution in 6-deoxy-6-tris(2-aminoethyl) amine derivative was found to be 0.59. 6-deoxy-6-tris(2-aminoethyl) amine derivative was reacted with different diisocyanates (Toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), 1,6-diisocyanatohexane (HMDI)) to produce guar gum based polyurea. Iodine complexes of the resulting polyurea were prepared by reacting with different iodinating agents. Different chemical reactions, formation of polyurea and its iodine complexes were thoroughly analyzed by different analytical techniques such as FT-IR, NMR, elemental analysis, XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and a reaction scheme has been proposed. Morphological and rheological characteristics were analyzed by SEM and viscosity measurement. Thermal analysis was carried out by TGA and DSC studies. Finally, by examining the complex's UV-Vis spectra, the iodine release characteristics from polyurea‑iodine complexes were investigated.

Heating/Solvent Responsive Shape-Memory Polymers for Implant Biomedical Devices in Minimally Invasive Surgery: Current Status and Challenge

This review is about the fundamentals and practical issues in applying both heating and solvent responsive shape memory polymers (SMPs) for implant biomedical devices via minimally invasive surgery. After revealing the general requirements in the design of biomedical devices based on SMPs and the fundamentals for the shape-memory effect in SMPs, the underlying mechanisms, characterization methods, and several representative biomedical applications, including vascular stents, tissue scaffolds, occlusion devices, drug delivery systems, and the current R&D status of them, are discussed. The new opportunities arising from emerging technologies, such as 3D printing, and new materials, such as vitrimer, are also highlighted. Finally, the major challenge that limits the practical clinical applications of SMPs at present is addressed.

Functional polyurethane nanomicelle with pH-responsive drug delivery property

A new functional pH-responsive polyurethane-based nanomicelle has been developed with BES-Na as the functional monomer, the buffering agent with tertiary amine, and sulfonic acid group was incorporated into the hydrophilic shell as the functional agent, which resulted in polyurethane nanosystem with pH-sensitive property. Folic acid (FA) was chosen as model hydrophobic drug to evaluate the loading and pH-triggered release of the PU micelles in vitro drug loading and release. The drug loading content (LC) and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) for FA-loaded micelles in phosphate-buffered solutions were 7.68% and 27.72%, respectively, and the largest accumulative drug release percentages in pH 6.8 and pH 5.0 were 79.17% and 89.83% in 24 h, respectively. A facile and versatile approach has been provided for the design and fabrication of smart nanovehicles for effective drug delivery and opens a new thought in the design and fabrication of biodegradable polyurethanes for next generation of nanomicellar systems.

Development of polyurethanes for bone repair

The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments on polyurethanes aimed at the design, synthesis, modifications, and biological properties in the field of bone tissue engineering. Different polyurethane systems are presented and discussed in terms of biodegradation, biocompatibility and bioactivity. A comprehensive discussion is provided of the influence of hard to soft segments ratio, catalysts, stiffness and hydrophilicity of polyurethanes. Interaction with various cells, behavior in vivo and current strategies in enhancing bioactivity of polyurethanes are described. The discussion on the incorporation of biomolecules and growth factors, surface modifications, and obtaining polyurethane-ceramics composites strategies is held. The main emphasis is placed on the progress of polyurethane applications in bone regeneration, including bone void fillers, shape memory scaffolds, and drug carrier.

Bioinspired Polyethersulfone Membrane Design via Blending with Functional Polyurethane

Polyurethanes (PUs) are currently considered to be biocompatible materials but limited by a low resistance to thrombus. We therefore design a heparin-like PU (HLPU) to modify polyethersulfone (PES) membranes approaching integrated antifouling and antithrombotic properties by bioinspiration of heparin structure. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-HLPU (PVP-HLPU) was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of VP using PU as a macroinitiator and then sulfonated by concentrated H2SO4. FTIR and NMR results demonstrated the successful synthesis of PVP-HLPU. By incorporation of PVP-HLPU, the cross-sectional structure of PES composite membranes altered from finger-like structure to sponge-like structure resulting in tunable permeability. The increased hydrophilicity verified by water contact angles benefited both the permeability and antifouling property. As a consequence, the composite membranes showed good blood compatibility, including decreased protein adsorption, suppressed platelet adhesion, lowered thrombin-antithrombin III generation, reduced complement activation, and prolonged clotting times. Interestingly, the PVP-capped HLPU showed better blood compatibility compared to polyethyleneglycol-capped and citric acid-capped HLPUs. The results demonstrated the enhanced antifouling and antithrombotic properties of PES hemodialysis membranes by the introduction of functional HLPUs. Also, the proposed method may forward the fabrication of hemocompatible membranes via bioinspired surface design.

Applications of Gold Nanoparticles in Biosensors

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as one of the most stable metal nanoparticles have demonstrated extensive applications in recent years. This paper will give a focus on the AuNPs as biosensors, due to their inertness, unique optical properties, high surface area, and various surface functionalization methods. Synthesis of AuNps and the surface functionalization will be discussed in the first part. The size, shape, and stability can be controlled by different synthetic methods, while reductant usually needed. By surface functionalization with different molecules such as polymers, nucleic acids, and proteins, AuNPs will aggregate when specified molecule linkages showing up enables selective detections. The application in biosensing to detect proteins, oligonucleotide, glucose, and heavy metals will be exemplified, followed by the summary and future perspective part in the conclusion.
