Estimation of environmental force for the haptic interface of robotic surgery

Electrically Elicited Force Response Characteristics of Forearm Extensor Muscles for Electrical Muscle Stimulation-Based Haptic Rendering

A haptic interface based on electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has huge potential in terms of usability and applicability compared with conventional haptic interfaces. This study analyzed the force response characteristics of forearm extensor muscles for EMS-based haptic rendering. We introduced a simplified mathematical model of the force response, which has been developed in the field of rehabilitation, and experimentally validated its feasibility for haptic applications. Two important features of the force response, namely the peak force and response time, with respect to the frequency and amplitude of the electrical stimulation were identified by investigating the experimental force response of the forearm extensor muscles. An exponential function was proposed to estimate the peak force with respect to the frequency and amplitude, and it was verified by comparing with the measured peak force. The response time characteristics were also examined with respect to the frequency and amplitude. A frequency-dependent tendency, i.e., an increase in response time with increasing frequency, was observed, whereas there was no correlation with the amplitude. The analysis of the force response characteristics with the application of the proposed force response model may help enhance the fidelity of EMS-based haptic rendering.

Prevalence of haptic feedback in robot-mediated surgery: a systematic review of literature

With the successful uptake and inclusion of robotic systems in minimally invasive surgery and with the increasing application of robotic surgery (RS) in numerous surgical specialities worldwide, there is now a need to develop and enhance the technology further. One such improvement is the implementation and amalgamation of haptic feedback technology into RS which will permit the operating surgeon on the console to receive haptic information on the type of tissue being operated on. The main advantage of using this is to allow the operating surgeon to feel and control the amount of force applied to different tissues during surgery thus minimising the risk of tissue damage due to both the direct and indirect effects of excessive tissue force or tension being applied during RS. We performed a two-rater systematic review to identify the latest developments and potential avenues of improving technology in the application and implementation of haptic feedback technology to the operating surgeon on the console during RS. This review provides a summary of technological enhancements in RS, considering different stages of work, from proof of concept to cadaver tissue testing, surgery in animals, and finally real implementation in surgical practice. We identify that at the time of this review, while there is a unanimous agreement regarding need for haptic and tactile feedback, there are no solutions or products available that address this need. There is a scope and need for new developments in haptic augmentation for robot-mediated surgery with the aim of improving patient care and robotic surgical technology further.

Grasper having tactile sensing function using acoustic reflection for laparoscopic surgery

PURPOSE

In current minimally invasive surgery techniques, the tactile information available to the surgeon is limited. Improving tactile sensation could enhance the operability of surgical instruments. Considering surgical applications, requirements such as having electrical safety, a simple structure, and sterilization capability should be considered. The current study sought to develop a grasper that can measure grasping force at the tip, based on a previously proposed tactile sensing method using acoustic reflection. This method can satisfy the requirements for surgical applications because it has no electrical element within the part that is inserted into the patient's body.

METHODS

We integrated our acoustic tactile sensing method into a conventional grasping forceps instrument. We designed the instrument so that acoustic cavities within a grasping arm and a fork sleeve were connected by a small cavity in a pivoting joint. In this design, when the angle between the two grasping arms changes during grasping, the total length and local curvature of the acoustic cavity remain unchanged. Thus, the grasping force can be measured regardless of the orientation of the grasping arm.

RESULTS

We developed a prototype sensorized grasper based on our proposed design. Fundamental tests revealed that sensor output increased with increasing contact force applied to the grasping arm, and the angle of the grasping arm did not significantly affect the sensor output. Moreover, the results of a grasping test, in which objects with different softness characteristics were held by the grasper, revealed that the grasping force could be appropriately adjusted to handle different objects on the basis of sensor output.

CONCLUSIONS

Experimental results demonstrated that the prototype grasper can measure grasping force, enabling safe and stable grasping.

A psychophysical evaluation of haptic controllers: viscosity perception of soft environments

In this paper, human viscosity perception in haptic teleoperation systems is thoroughly analyzed. An accurate perception of viscoelastic environmental properties such as viscosity is a critical ability in several contexts, such as telesurgery, telerehabilitation, telemedicine, and soft-tissue interaction. We study and compare the ability to perceive viscosity from the standpoint of detection and discrimination using several relevant control methods for the teleoperator. The perception-based method, which was proposed by the authors to enhance the operator's kinesthetic perception, is compared with the conventional transparency-based control method for the teleoperation system. The fidelity-based method, which is a primary method among perception-centered control schemes in teleoperation, is also studied. We also examine the necessity and impact of the remote-site force information for each of the methods. The comparison is based on a series of psychophysical experiments measuring absolute threshold and just noticeable difference for all conditions. The results clearly show that the perception-based method enhances both detection and discrimination abilities compare with other control methods. The results further show that the fidelity-based method confers a better discrimination ability than the transparency-based method, although this is not true with respect to detection ability. In addition, we show that force information improves viscosity detection for all control methods, as predicted from previous theoretical analysis, but improves the discrimination threshold only for the perception-based method.

A force observation method for tracking control of flexible-link manipulators

In this paper, a composite controller is proposed for single-link flexible manipulators exposed to external tip force disturbances. In the proposed scheme, the extended Kalman filter is utilized to observe the environmental forces and the Lyapunov redesign robust controller is applied to control the destabilizing effect of the observation errors in noisy situations. The observed force can be utilized in different applications (such as tele-surgical robotics) in order to eliminate the necessity of additional force sensors. This fact is important for structural miniaturization and cost reduction. The main contributions of this paper are (1) proposing a disturbance observation technique for in-contact flexible link manipulators (note that the challenge of Jacobian singularity is studied as a possible diverging factor of the observation) and (2) proposing the composite robust controller to eliminate the destabilizing effect of estimation errors. The advantages of the proposed control scheme over the conventional techniques are analyzed. Simulation results are given for a single-link flexible manipulator to illustrate the effectiveness of the composite control technique and experimental results are given to validate the performance of the observation method.
