Abstract
BACKGROUND Rotavirus is known to be one of the most common infections, usually associated with severe diarrhea. Despite the existence of two licensed vaccines, many countries, including Turkey, have not included rotavirus vaccination in their nationally funded vaccination program. This article explores what factors influence parents' decisions about whether to have their children vaccinated against rotavirus and which factors changed from 2010 through 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were collected over two periods via questionnaires. The first period was from January 2009 through March 2010, and data were gathered from a semi-private pediatric outpatient clinic in Kocaeli, Turkey. The second period was from August 2015 through May 2016, and data were collected from parents during their pediatric outpatient clinic visits. Two questionnaires were designed to find out the rotavirus vaccination status of the children, socio-demographic factors, and reasons for excluding/accepting the rotavirus vaccine. The level of knowledge about the rotavirus vaccine was investigated. Parents indicated their level of agreement with each statement using a five-point Likert scale. RESULTS While only 3.8% of the parents accepted the rotavirus in 2009-2010, it increased to 69.5% in 2015-2016. Significant factors influencing parents' decision to vaccinate their children for rotavirus were advice from a pediatrician, a lack of correct and timely rotavirus information, and the cost of the vaccine. CONCLUSIONS The acceptance of the rotavirus vaccine depends on parental perceptions, which may be influenced by accurate and timely information, the advice of their healthcare provider, and inclusion in the nationally funded vaccination program. In contrast to other studies reported, the education level of the mothers and fathers and their job types appear to be important. It was also found that parents' attitudes and perceptions changed over time.

BackgroundTwo rotavirus (RV) vaccines were licensed in Greece in late 2006 and included in the national immunisation programme in 2012.AimTo study the epidemiology and genotype distribution of RV in children during the post-vaccination period and assess the impact of increased vaccination coverage.MethodsIn a prospective multicentre hospital-based study, hospitalised children (≤ 16 years) with an RV-positive faecal sample were recruited. Epidemiological and genotyping analyses were performed; periods of low (2008-12) and moderate (2012-20) RV vaccination coverage were compared. Statistical analysis was performed with a chi-squared or Mann-Whitney U test and logistic regression.ResultsA total of 3,874 children (55.6% male; n = 2,153) with median age of 1.4 years (IQR: 0.5-3.3) were studied during 2008-20. Most RV-infected children were aged ≤ 3 years (72.2%) and hospitalised during December-May (69.1%). Common RV genotypes (G1P[8], G2P[4], G3P[8], G4P[8], G9P[8], G12P[8]) were detected in 92.2% of samples; G-P combinations with prevalence above 1% were G4P[8] (44.1%), G1P[8] (25.4%), G2P[4] (14.9%), G9P[8] (3.5%), G12P[8] (2.2%), G3P[8] (2.1%), other (4.3%) and mixed (3.5%). Of all samples, 97.6% were homotypic or partially heterotypic to vaccines' genotypes. With moderate vaccination coverage, the seasonal peak was detected earlier, children were older and partially or fully heterotypic genotypes were increased (p < 0.001).ConclusionsIn the era of moderate RV vaccination coverage in Greece, epidemiology of RV in hospitalised children seemed to change. However, most circulating genotypes remain homotypic or partially heterotypic to RV vaccines. Continuous epidemiological surveillance and genotyping are important to monitor possible changes arising from RV vaccines' implementation.

Abstract
To evaluate rotavirus (RV) disease burden and circulating strains of RV among Chinese children younger than 5-years old who had diarrhea from 2011 to 2018. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI and WANFANG databases were systematically searched to identify studies that reported RV prevalence in mainland China. After data extraction, a fixed-effects model or a random-effects model was applied to estimate RV positivity and proportions of G and P types. Statistical analysis was conducted using R software. We initially reviewed 1323 studies, and identified 69 studies that were eligible. The overall proportion of RV gastroenteritis (RVGE) among children under 5-years old who presented with diarrhea and sought medical care was 34.0% (95% CI: 31.3, 36.8), and RV positivity was higher among inpatients (39.7%) than outpatients (23.9%). Western areas of China had the highest proportion of RVGE (42.7%), and RV positivity was highest for children who were 6 months-old to 2 years-old. The most prevalent G types were G3 (26.1%), G9 (17.5%), and G1 (12.8%), the most prevalent P type was P[8] (56.8%) and the most prevalent G-P combination was G9P[8] (20.9%). RV continues to be a main cause of acute gastroenteritis in Chinese children who are younger than 5 years old. Following the introduction of an RV vaccine in 2011, monitoring of the disease burden of RV diarrhea and circulating strains in China remain important for assessments of vaccine efficacy.

Abstract
Rotavirus A (RVA) is a major etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. Hospital-based surveillance of viral gastroenteritis in paediatric population in Palermo (Italy) from 2017 onwards revealed a sharp increase in G3P[8] RVAs, accounting for 71% of all the RVAs detected in 2019. This pattern had not been observed before in Italy, with G3 RVA usually being detected at rates lower than 3%. In order to investigate this unique epidemiological pattern, the genetic diversity of G3 RVAs identified during a 16-year long surveillance (2004-2019) was explored by systematic sequencing of the VP7 and VP4 genes and by whole genome sequencing of selected G3 strains, representative of the various RVA seasons. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses of the VP7 and VP4 genes revealed the emergence, in 2017 of reassortant equine-like G3P[8], which gradually replaced former G3P[8] strains. The G3P[8] circulating before 2017 showed a Wa-like constellation of genome segments while the G3P[8] that emerged in 2017 had a DS-1-like backbone. On direct inspection of the VP7 and VP4 antigenic epitopes, the equine-like G3P[8] strains possessed several amino acid variations in neutralizing regions compared with vaccine strains. The equine-like G3P[8] RVAs are a further example of the zoonotic impact of animal viruses on human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rotavirus is globally the most common viral pathogen in childhood gastroenteritis. This study aimed to estimate the number of Turkish children suffering from early-childhood gastroenteritis by rotavirus by performing a meta-analysis. METHODS Meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was performed. Following the guidelines, primary studies were found reporting the prevalence of rotavirus gastroenteritis in Turkey. We performed a computerized search of published studies in national and international databases from 1990 to 2018. We selected 38 out of 721 studies for our study. Meta-analysis was carried out using R statistical software. The Cochrane Q statistic was calculated to assess the heterogeneity of the study results. Heterogeneity among studies was evaluated using the I2 statistic. Effect-size estimate was reported with 95% confidence interval. RESULTS On the basis of 38 selected articles, 80,113 children up to five years of age were diagnosed with symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, of whom the stool samples of 13,651 children were positive for rotavirus. The pooled prevalence of rotavirus was 19% in children younger than five years of age with acute gastroenteritis. In terms of seasonal prevalence, the highest prevalence rate was found in winter. CONCLUSION This study supports the major prevalence of early-childhood gastroenteritis by rotavirus among Turkish children. Therefore, the decision to adopt immunization programs to prevent rotavirus infection might be helpful in Turkey.

Abstract
Fecal pollution of water is a serious concern because it is associated with the transmission of pathogens. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of group A rotavirus (RVA) in surface waters from the Arias-Arenales River in Salta, a northern city in Argentina, and to define possible sources of fecal viral pollution. A total of 116 water samples were analyzed and RVA was detected in 3.4% (95% CI: 0.1-7.0%), with concentrations ranging from 1.9 × 105 to 3.8 × 106 genome copies per liter. RVA strains were characterized as G1P[8], G4P[8] and G9P[8], which are common genotypes circulating in the local population. The Arias-Arenales River presented unusual and sporadic contamination by RVA, originated from stormwater discharges and a variety of non-identified sources, and support the essential need of viral indicators for enhanced monitoring of water quality.
