Nitrofurantoin-Microbial Degradation and Interactions with Environmental Bacterial Strains

The continuous exposure of living organisms and microorganisms to antibiotics that have increasingly been found in various environmental compartments may be perilous. One group of antibacterial agents that have an environmental impact that has been very scarcely studied is nitrofuran derivatives. Their representative is nitrofurantoin (NFT)-a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic that is often overdosed. The main aims of the study were to: (a) isolate and characterize new microbial strains that are able to grow in the presence of NFT, (b) investigate the ability of isolates to decompose NFT, and (c) study the impact of NFT on microbial cell properties. As a result, five microbial species were isolated. A 24-h contact of bacteria with NFT provoked modifications in microbial cell properties. The greatest differences were observed in Sphingobacterium thalpophilum P3d, in which a decrease in both total and inner membrane permeability (from 86.7% to 48.3% and from 0.49 to 0.42 µM min^-1) as well as an increase in cell surface hydrophobicity (from 28.3% to 39.7%) were observed. Nitrofurantoin removal by selected microbial cultures ranged from 50% to 90% in 28 days, depending on the bacterial strain. Although the isolates were able to decompose the pharmaceutical, its presence significantly affected the bacterial cells. Hence, the environmental impact of NFT should be investigated to a greater extent.

Pyroelectricity as a possible mechanism for cell membrane permeabilization

The effects of pyroelectricity on cell membrane permeability had never been explored. Pyroelectricity consists in the generation of an electric field in the surface of some materials when a change in temperature is produced. In the present study, tourmaline microparticles, which are known to display pyroelectrical properties, were subjected to different changes in temperature upon exposure to cells in order to induce an electric field at their surface. Then, the changes in the permeability of the cell membrane to a cytotoxic agent (bleomycin) were assessed by a cloning efficacy test. An increase in the permeability of the cell membrane was only detected when tourmaline was subjected to a change in temperature. This suggests that the apparition of an induced pyroelectrical electric field on the material could actually be involved in the observed enhancement of the cell membrane permeability as a result of cell electropermeabilization.

Synergetic Effect of Ultrasound, the Heterogeneous Fenton Reaction and Photocatalysis by TiO₂ Loaded on Nickel Foam on the Degradation of Pollutants

The synergistic effect of ultrasound, the heterogeneous Fenton reaction and photocatalysis was studied using a nickel foam (NF)-supporting TiO₂ system and rhodamine B (RhB) as a target. The NF-supporting TiO₂ system was prepared by depositing TiO₂ on the skeleton of NF repeatedly and then calcining it. To optimize the conditions and parameters, the catalytic activity was tested in four systems (ultrasound alone (US), nickel foam (NF), US/NF and NF/US/H₂O₂). The optimal conditions were fixed at 0.1 g/mL NF, initial 5.00 mg/L RhB, 300 W ultrasonic power, pH = 3 and 5.00 mg/L H₂O₂. The effects of the dissolution of nickel from NF and quenching of the Fenton reaction were studied on degradation efficiency. When the heterogeneous Fenton reaction is combined with TiO₂-photocatalysis, the pollutant removal efficiency is enhanced significantly. Through this synergistic effect, 22% and 80% acetochlor was degraded within 10 min and 80 min, respectively.

The antibacterial activity of ceramsite coated by silver nanoparticles in micropore

In the present study, ceramsite was combined with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to fabricate a new nanocomposite for water disinfection. The ceramsite was prepared by fly ash, straw ash, and cement. AgNPs were synthesized using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the capping agent. The nanocomposite was prepared by self-aggregation of AgNPs on the surface of the ceramsite. AgNPs capped with PVP can form a thin film on the surface of micropore in ceramsite. The nanocomposite can inhibit bacteria growth and induce damage of the cell membrane of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, the nanocomposite is a new material which can be used for disinfection in drinking water.
