Green Synthesis of Polylactic acid/Fe3O4@β-Cyclodextrin Nanofibrous Nanocomposite Loaded with Ferulago Angulata Extract as a Novel Nano-biosorbent: Evaluation of Diazinon Removal and Antibacterial Activity

Background

Organophosphate pesticides are one of the most extensively applied insecticides in agriculture. These insecticides persist in the environs and thereby cause severe pollution problems. Iron oxide polymer nanocomposites are wastewater remediation agents synthesized by various methods. When compared to chemical processes, green synthesis using plant extract is thought to be more cost- and environmentally-friendly.

Objectives

This study aimed to evaluate the green synthesis of Fe3O4@β-Cyclodextrin (Fe3O4@β-CD) nanoparticles using Ferulago angulata (F. angulata) methanol extract. These nanoparticles are loaded on polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous nanocomposite along with Ferulago angulata extract (2, 4, and, 6wt %) to produce PLA/Fe3O4@β-CD/F. angulata extract nanofibrous nanocomposite as a new nano biosorbent. Furthermore, the antibacterial properties of this compound and its activity in diazinon removal have been evaluated.

Materials and Methods

Fe3O4@β-CD nanoparticles synthesis was performed via co-precipitation method using FeCl3.6H2O and FeCl2.4H2O and β-cyclodextrin, and Ferulago angulata extract. Then polylactic acid/ Fe3O4@β-CD / F. angulate.extract nanofibrous nanocomposite was prepared by the electrospinning method. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the structure of the nanocomposite. The antibacterial activity of this nanocomposite against several fish and human bacterial pathogens, as well as its effectiveness in diazinon elimination, have been evaluated in the sections that follow.

Results

The nanocomposite structure demonstrated that Fe3O4 nanoparticles were produced and put into the polylactic acid matrix with an average particle size of 40 nm. Furthermore, the results showed that this nanocomposite exhibited removal efficiency of diazinon over 80% after 120 minutes under pH=7 and 2.5 gr.L-1 nanocomposite concentration. Also, this structure showed above 70% antibacterial ability against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and 60% antibacterial ability against Streptococcus iniae and Yersinia ruckeri.

Conclusion

Fe3O4 nanocomposite synthesis may be accomplished in a delicate and efficient manner by using Ferulago angulata to produce Fe3O4@-CD nanoparticles. The stability of the nanoparticles was enhanced by combining Ferulago angulata extract with polylactic acid nanofibers to create an antibacterial homocomposition nanocomposite. This device may be used to remove and disinfect diazinon from aqueous media in an environmentally friendly manner.

Uncovering the Role of Surface-Attached Ag Nanoparticles in Photodegradation Improvement of Rhodamine B by ZnO-Ag Nanorods

ZnO nanorods decorated with metal nanoparticles have sparked considerable interest in recent years thanks to their suitability for a wide range of applications, such as photocatalysis, photovoltaics, antibacterial activity, and sensing devices. In this study, we prepared and investigated the improved solar-light-assisted photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanorods (NRs) decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) using a conventional rhodamine B (RB) dye as a model water pollutant. We showed that the presence of Ag NPs on the surface of ZnO NRs significantly increases the degradation rate of RB dye (~0.2432 min^-1) when compared to bare ZnO NRs (~0.0431 min^-1). The improved photocatalytic activity of ZnO-Ag was further experimentally tested using radical scavengers. The obtained results reveal that ˙OH and ˙O₂^- radicals are main active species involved in the RB dye photodegradation by ZnO-Ag NRs. It was concluded that efficient charge separation plays a major role in photocatalytic activity improvement.

Glycopolymer-Based Materials: Synthesis, Properties, and Biosensing Applications

Glycopolymer materials have emerged as a significant biopolymer class that has piqued the scientific community's attention due to their potential applications. Recently, they have been found to be a unique synthetic biomaterial; glycopolymer materials have also been used for various applications, including direct therapeutic methods, medical adhesives, drug/gene delivery systems, and biosensor applications. Therefore, for the next stage of biomaterial research, it is essential to understand current breakthroughs in glycopolymer-based materials research. This review discusses the most widely utilized synthetic methodologies for glycopolymer-based materials, their properties based on structure-function interactions, and the significance of these materials in biosensing applications, among other topics. When creating glycopolymer materials, contemporary polymerization methods allow precise control over molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chemical activity, and polymer architecture. This review concludes with a discussion of the challenges and complexities of glycopolymer-based biosensors, in addition to their potential applications in the future.

Taguchi L25 (54) Approach for Methylene Blue Removal by Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofiber-Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composite

A membrane composed of polyethylene terephthalate nanofiber and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PET NF-MWCNTs) composite is used to adsorb methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to study the surface properties of the adsorbent. Several parameters affecting dye adsorption (pH, MB dye initial concentration, PET NF-MWCNTs dose, and contact time) are optimized for optimal removal efficiency (R, %) by using the Taguchi L25 (54) Orthogonal Array approach. According to the ANOVA results, pH has the highest contributing percentage at 71.01%, suggesting it has the most significant impact on removal efficiency. The adsorbent dose is the second most affected (12.08%), followed by the MB dye initial concentration of 5.91%, and the least affected is the contact time (1.81%). In addition, experimental findings confirm that the Langmuir isotherm is well-fitted, suggesting a monolayer capping of MB dye on the PET-NF-MWCNT surface with a maximum adsorption capacity of 7.047 mg g−1. Also, the kinetic results are well-suited to the pseudo-second-order model. There is a good agreement between the calculated (qe) and experimental values for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
