Abstract
A new class of rigid, photoactive heteroditopic anionic ligands based on the 1,10-disubstituted [closo-B10H10]2- anion was designed and six of these compounds were obtained from [closo-B10H10]2- in three steps with yields in the range of 25-30%. The design includes two apical substituents, a metal coordinating cyano group and an azinium (4-cyanopyridinium, 4,4'-bipyridinium, pyrazinium, pyrimidinium, and pyridazinium), which provides a secondary binding site. The azinium substituent is involved in an efficient intramolecular charge transfer process and compensates one of the two delocalized negative charges of the boron cluster. The compounds exhibit intramolecular CT bands with maxima in the range of 340-410 nm (MeCN) and two are weakly fluorescent with significant Stokes shifts. A highly colored bis-zwitterionic byproduct with two clusters, [closo-1-CN-B10H8-10-(pyrazinium-1,4-diyl)-10'-B10H8-1'-CN-closo]2-, was also obtained in a low yield. The ligands were structurally characterized (XRD) and their geometrical and photophysical properties were compared to those of the analogues lacking the CN group and the parent pyridinium derivative. A comparative analysis of experimental data was augmented with DFT and TD-DFT results. Two of the ligands (with the 4,4'-bipyridinium and pyrazinium) were converted to (η5-Cp)(dppe)Fe complexes and one of them was used to obtain a heterodinuclear complex with Cu(pdc)(H2O)3 to demonstrate the ditopic function of the ligand. All three iron complexes were characterized by the XRD method.

Abstract
Microhydrated closo-boranes have attracted great interest due to their superchaotropic activity related to the well-known Hofmeister effect and important applications in biomedical and battery fields. In this work, we report a combined negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical investigation on hydrated closo-decaborate clusters [B10H10]2-·nH2O (n = 1-7) with a direct comparison to their analogues [B12H12]2-·nH2O and free water clusters. A single H2O molecule is found to be sufficient to stabilize the intrinsically unstable [B10H10]2- dianion. The first two water molecules strongly interact with the solute forming B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonds while additional water molecules show substantially reduced binding energies. Unlike [B12H12]2-·nH2O possessing a highly structured water network with the attached H2O molecules arranged in a unified pattern by maximizing B-H···H-O dihydrogen bonding, distinct structural arrangements of the water clusters within [B10H10]2-·nH2O are achieved with the water cluster networks from trimer to heptamer resembling free water clusters. Such a distinct difference arises from the variations in size, symmetry, and charge distributions between these two dianions. The present finding again confirms the structural diversity of hydrogen-bonding networks in microhydrated closo-boranes and enriches our understanding of aqueous borate chemistry.

Abstract
A potentially general intermediate, [closo-B10H8-10-PhI-1-COOH]-, for a class of functional anionic carboxylic acids, [closo-B10H8-10-X-1-COOH]2-, was obtained in four steps and 26% overall yield from [closo-B10H10]2-. It was converted to the pyridinium derivative (X = C5H5N+) and subsequently to coordination complexes with (phen)2Cu2+ and (phen)2Zn2+ ions. Both the acid and Zn(II) complex exhibit a cage-to-pyridine charge-transfer band. The availability of such acids opens access to functional metal-ion complexes with compensated charges.

Abstract
Despite being an important closo-borate in condensed phase boron chemistry, isolated [B10H10]2- is electronically unstable and has never been detected in the gas phase. Herein, we report a successful capture of this fleeting species through binding with an octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (omC4P) molecule to form a stable gaseous omC4P·[B10H10]2- complex and its characterizations utilizing negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES). The recorded NIPE spectrum, contributed by both omC4P and [B10H10]2-, is deconvoluted by subtracting the omC4P contribution to yield a [B10H10]2- spectrum. The obtained [B10H10]2- spectrum consists of four major bands spanning the electron binding energy (EBE) range from 1 to 5 eV, with the EBE gaps matching excellently with the energy intervals of computed high-lying occupied molecular orbitals of the [B10H10]2- dianion. This study showcases a generic method to utilize omC4P to capture unstable multiply charged anions in the gas phase for experimental determination of their electronic structures.

Abstract
Metal hydroborates and their derivatives have been receiving attention as potential solid-state ion conductors for battery applications owing to their impressive electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. However, to date only a fraction of these compounds has been investigated as solid-state electrolytes. Here, MB12H11NH3 (M = Li and Na) hydroborates are synthesized and investigated as electrolyte materials for all-solid-state batteries. The room temperature α-NaB12H11NH3 was structurally solved in P212121 (a = 7.1972(3) Å, b = 9.9225(4) Å, and c = 14.5556(5) Å). It shows a polymorphic structural transition near 140 °C to cubic Fm3̄m. LiB12H11NH3 and NaB12H11NH3 exhibit cationic conductivities of σ(Li+) = 3.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 and σ(Na+) = 1.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 200 °C. Hydration is found to improve ionic conductivity of the hydroborates. It is presumed that modest ionic conductivities could be due to a lack of significant re-orientational dynamics in the crystal structure resulting from the presence of the bulky -NH3 group in the anion.

Abstract
In this work, we studied lead(II) and cobalt(II) complexation of derivatives [2-B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3]2- and [2-B10H9O(CH2)5N3]2- of the closo-decaborate anion containing pendant azido groups in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridyl. Mononuclear [PbL2{An}] and binuclear [Pb2L4(NO3)2{An}] lead complexes (where {An} is the N3-substituted boron cluster) were isolated and studied by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The mononuclear lead(II) complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3] and the binuclear lead(II) complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex [Pb2(phen)4(NO3)2[B10H9O(CH2)5)N3], the boron cluster is coordinated by the metal atom only via the 3c2e MHB bonds. In complex [Pb(phen)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3], the coordination environment of the metal includes BH groups of the boron cluster and the oxygen atom of the exo-polyhedral substituent. When the reaction was performed in a CH3CN/water mixture, the binuclear lead(II) complex [(Pb(bipy)NO3)(Pb(bipy)2NO3)(B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2N3)]·CH3CN·H2O was isolated, where the boron cluster acts as a bridging ligand between lead atoms coordinated by the boron cage via the O atoms of the substituent and/or the BH groups. In the course of cobalt(II) complexation, the starting compound (Ph4P)2[B10H9O(CH2)5N3] was isolated and its structure was also determined by X-ray diffraction. Although a number of lead(II) complexes with coordinated N3 are known from the literature, no complexes with the boron cluster coordinated by the pendant N3 group involved in the metal coordination have been isolated.

Abstract
The review covers more than a century of decaborane chemistry from the first synthesis by Alfred Stock to the present day. The main attention is paid to the reactions of the substitution of hydrogen atoms by various atoms and groups with the formation of exo-polyhedral boron-halogen, boron-oxygen, boron-sulfur, boron-nitrogen, boron-phosphorus, and boron-carbon bonds. Particular attention is paid to the chemistry of conjucto-borane anti-[B18H22], whose structure is formed by two decaborane moieties with a common edge, the chemistry of which has been intensively developed in the last decade.

Abstract
A green, fast and selective approach for the synthesis of mono-substituted closo-decaborate derivatives [2-B10H9COR]2- has been established via a nucleophilic addition reaction between the carbonyl derivative of closo-decaborate [2-B10H9CO]- and the corresponding Grignard reagent RMgX, where R is the ethyl, iso-propyl, pentyl, allyl, vinyl and propynyl groups. This approach is accomplished under mild conditions with 70-80% yields. The significance of these derivative is their ability to constitute building blocks for polymeric integration via the allyl, vinyl and propynyl substituents. All products were characterized by 11B, 1H and 13C NMR, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry.

The structures of binuclear complex [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9OH]]2·CH3CN (1·CH3CN), mononuclear complex [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2OH]]·0.5bipy·CH3CN (2·0.5bipy·CH3CN), and polymeric complex [Pb(bipy)[B10H9O(CH2)5O(CH2)2OH]]n (3) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all three compounds, the co-ordination polyhedra of lead(II) are formed by N atoms from two bipy molecules, O atoms of the substituent attached to the boron cage, and BH groups of the boron cage.

Synthesis of Disubstituted Carboxonium Derivatives of Closo-Decaborate Anion [2,6-B 10H 8O 2CC 6H 5] -: Theoretical and Experimental Study. Molecules 2023; 28:1757. Abstract
A comprehensive study focused on the preparation of disubstituted carboxonium derivatives of closo-decaborate anion [2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5]- was carried out. The proposed synthesis of the target product was based on the interaction between the anion [B10H11]- and benzoic acid C6H5COOH. It was shown that the formation of this product proceeds stepwise through the formation of a mono-substituted product [B10H9OC(OH)C6H5]-. In addition, an alternative one-step approach for obtaining the target derivative is postulated. The structure of tetrabutylammonium salts of carboxonium derivative ((C4H9)4N)[2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5] was established with the help of X-ray structure analysis. The reaction pathway for the formation of [2,6-B10H8O2CC6H5]- was investigated with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This process has an electrophile induced nucleophilic substitution (EINS) mechanism, and intermediate anionic species play a key role. Such intermediates have a structure in which one boron atom coordinates two hydrogen atoms. The regioselectivity for the process of formation for the 2,6-isomer was also proved by theoretical calculations. Generally, in the experimental part, the simple and available approach for producing disubstituted carboxonium derivative was introduced, and the mechanism of this process was investigated with the help of theoretical calculations. The proposed approach can be applicable for the preparation of a wide range of disubstituted derivatives of closo-borate anions.

Effect of Nature of Substituents on Coordination Properties of Mono- and Disubstituted Derivatives of Boron Cluster Anions [BnHn]2– (n = 10, 12) and Carboranes with exo-Polyhedral B–X Bonds (X = N, O, S, Hal). Abstract
This review systematizes data on the coordination ability of mono- and disubstituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes in complexation with transition metals. Boron clusters anions [BnHn]2–, monocarborane anions [CBnHn–1]–, and dicarboranes [C2BnHn–2] (with non-functionalized carbon atoms) (n = 10, 12) containing the B–X exo-polyhedral bonds (X = N, O, S, Hal) are discussed. Synthesis and structural features of complexes known to date are described. The effect of complexing metal and substituent attached to the boron cage on the composition and structures of the final complexes is analyzed. It has been established that substituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes can act as both ligands and counterions. A complexing agent can coordinate substituted derivatives of the boron cluster anions due to three-center two-electron 3c2e MHB bonds, by the substituent functional groups, or a mixed type of coordination can be realized, through the BH groups of the boron cage and the substituent. As for B-substituted carboranes, complexes with coordinated substituents or salts with non-coordinated carborane derivatives have been isolated; compounds with MHB bonding are not characteristic of carboranes.

Abstract
The preparation of novel nitrilium derivatives of closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H11NCR]−, R = n-C3H7, i-C3H7, 4-C6H4CH3, 1-C10H7 is described. Target compounds were obtained in good yields (up to 73%). The synthesis of target borylated nitrilium derivatives was characterised by the simplicity of the chemical apparatus and the absence of the necessity for the purification of desired compounds. The crystal structures of previously obtained [B12H11NCCH3]− and novel [B12H11NCC3H7]− were established with the help of X-ray structure analysis. DFT-analysis of several nitrilium derivatives [B12H11NCR]−, R = CH3, C3H7, 4-CH3C6H4 was carried out. The main peculiarities of the C≡N bond of the exo-polyhedral substituent were revealed in terms of bond lengths, bond orders and atomic charges. The LUMO orbitals of the systems considered were examined for understanding of the electrophilic nature of the nitrilium derivatives of the closo-dodecaborate anion.
