Anisotropic Interfacial Force Field for Interfaces of Water with Hexagonal Boron Nitride

This study introduces an anisotropic interfacial potential that provides an accurate description of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions between water and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) at their interface. Benchmarked against the strongly constrained and appropriately normed functional, the developed force field demonstrates remarkable consistency with reference data sets, including binding energy curves and sliding potential energy surfaces for various configurations involving a water molecule adsorbed atop the h-BN surface. These findings highlight the significant improvement achieved by the developed force field in empirically describing the anisotropic vdW interactions of the water/h-BN heterointerfaces. Utilizing this anisotropic force field, molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that atomically flat, pristine h-BN exhibits inherent hydrophobicity. However, when atomic-step surface roughness is introduced, the wettability of h-BN undergoes a significant change, leading to a hydrophilic nature. The calculated water contact angle (WCA) for the roughened h-BN surface is approximately 64°, which closely aligns with experimental WCA values ranging from 52° to 67°. These findings indicate the high probability of the presence of atomic steps on the surfaces of the experimental h-BN samples, emphasizing the need for further experimental verification. The development of the anisotropic interfacial force field for accurately describing interactions at the water/h-BN heterointerfaces is a significant advancement in accurately simulating the wettability of two-dimensional (2D) materials, offering a reliable tool for studying the dynamic and transport properties of water at these interfaces, with implications for materials science and nanotechnology.

Oxygen-Tolerant Photografting for Surface Structuring from Microliter Volumes

Here, we report an oxygen-tolerant photografting technique to grow polymer brushes employing microliter volumes of monomer solution under ambient conditions. With the key advantages that include spatial control, initiator/catalyst-free nature, and high oxygen tolerance, a series of homo-, multiblock, and arbitrary patterned polymer brushes were successfully obtained by photografting. Moreover, a dual-functional surface with hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties could easily be realized by one-pot photografting. These results illustrated the practicality and versatility of this strategy, which will allow nonexperts access to polymer brush architectures and broaden the potential applications of polymer brushes.

Structure of Self-Initiated Photopolymerized Films: A Comparison of Models

Self-initiated photografting and photopolymerization (SI-PGP) uses UV illumination to graft polymers to surfaces without additional photoinitiators using the monomers as initiators, "inimers". A wider use of this method is obstructed by a lack of understanding of the resulting, presumably heterogeneous, polymer structure and of the parallel degradation under continuous UV illumination. We have used neutron reflectometry to investigate the structure of hydrated SI-PGP-prepared poly(HEMA-co-PEG₁₀MA) (poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-(ethylene glycol)₁₀ methacrylate)) films and compared parabolic, sigmoidal, and Gaussian models for the polymer volume fraction distributions. Results from fitting these models to the data suggest that either model can be used to approximate the volume fraction profile to similar accuracy. In addition, a second layer of deuterated poly(methacrylic acid) (poly(dMAA)) was grafted over the existing poly(HEMA-co-PEG₁₀MA) layer, and the resulting double-grafted films were also studied by neutron reflectometry to shed light on the UV-polymerization process and the inevitable UV-induced degradation which competes with the grafting.

Ti3C2Tx MXene Polymer Composites for Anticorrosion: An Overview and Perspective

As the most studied two-dimensional (2D) material from the MXene family, Ti₃C₂T_x has constantly gained interest from academia and industry. Ti₃C₂T_x MXene has the highest electrical conductivity (up to 24,000 S cm^-1) and one of the highest stiffness values with a Young's modulus of ∼ 334 GPa among water-dispersible conductive 2D materials. The negative surface charge of MXene helps to disperse it well in aqueous and other polar solvents. This solubility across a wide range of solvents, excellent interface interaction, tunable surface functionality, and stability with other organic/polymeric materials combined with the layered structure of Ti₃C₂T_x MXene make it a promising material for anticorrosion coatings. While there are many reviews on Ti₃C₂T_x MXene polymer composites for catalysis, flexible electronics, and energy storage, to our knowledge, no review has been published yet on MXenes' anticorrosion applications. In this brief report, we summarize the current progress and the development of Ti₃C₂T_x polymer composites for anticorrosion. We also provide an outlook and discussion on possible ways to improve the exploitation of Ti₃C₂T_x polymer composites as anticorrosive materials. Finally, we provide a perspective beyond Ti₃C₂T_x MXene composition for the development of future anticorrosion coatings.

Two-dimensional conjugated metal–organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs): chemistry and function for MOFtronics

Patterning GaSe by High-Powered Laser Beams

We report the high-powered laser modification of the chemical, physical, and structural properties of the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals material GaSe. Our results show that contrary to expectations and previous reports, GaSe at the periphery of a high-power laser beam does not entirely decompose into Se and Ga2O3. In contrast, we find unexpectedly that the Raman signal from GaSe gets amplified around regions where it was not expected to exist. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), dielectric force microscopy (DFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) results show that laser irradiation induces the formation of nanoparticles. Our analyses demonstrate that, except for a fraction of Ga2Se3, these nanoparticles still belong to the GaSe phase but possess different electrical and optical properties. These changes are evidenced in the increased Raman intensity attributed to the near-resonance conditions with the Raman excitation laser. The elemental analysis of nanoparticles shows that the relative selenium content increased to as much as 70% from a 50:50 value in stoichiometric GaSe. This elemental change is related to the formation of the Ga2Se3 phase identified by Raman spectroscopy at some locations near the edge. Further, we exploit the localized high-power laser processing of GaSe to induce the formation of Ag-GaSe nanostructures by exposure to a solution of AgNO3. The selective reaction of AgNO3 with laser-irradiated GaSe gives rise to composite nanostructures that display photocatalytic activity originally absent in the pristine 2D material. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by the transformation of 4-nitrobenzenethiol to its amino and dimer forms detected in situ by Raman spectroscopy. This work improves the understanding of light-matter interaction in layered systems, offering an approach to the formation of laser-induced composites with added functionality.

Polymer Brushes on Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Patterning and as a SERS Active Sensing Layer via Incorporated Nanoparticles

Graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) has a broad range of promising applications, from energy harvesting and storage to sensing. However, most of the applications are still restricted due to gCN poor dispersibility and limited functional groups. Herein, a direct photografting of gCN using various polymer brushes with tailorable functionalities via UV photopolymerization at ambient conditions is demonstrated. The systematic study of polymer brush-functionalized gCN reveals that the polymerization did not alter the inherent structure of gCN. Compared to the pristine gCN, the gCN-polymer composites show good dispersibility in various solvents such as water, ethanol, and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Patterned polymer brushes on gCN can be realized by employing photomask and microcontact printing technology. The polymer brushes with incorporated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on gCN can act as a multifunctional recyclable active sensing layer for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection and photocatalysis. This multifunctionality is shown in consecutive cycles of SERS and photocatalytic degradation processes that can be applied to in situ monitor pollutants, such as dyes or pharmaceutical waste, with high chemical sensitivity as well as to water remediation. This dual functionality provides a significant advantage to our AgNPs/polymer-gCN with regard to state-of-the-art systems reported so far that only allow SERS pollutant detection but not their decomposition. These results may provide a new methodology for the covalent functionalization of gCN and may enable new applications in the field of catalysis, biosensors, and, most interestingly, environmental remediation.

External additives regulate the copper disproportionation/comproportionation equilibrium to control polymer brush growth in surface-initiated Cu(0)-mediated controlled radical polymerization.

Grafting Polymers onto Carbon Nitride via Visible-Light-Induced Photofunctionalization

Metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has attracted significant attention recently due to its multiple applications, such as photocatalysis, energy storage and conversion, and biomaterials, albeit formation of g-CN films is challenging. Herein, a “grafting to” route to graft polymer brushes onto g-CN via visible-light irradiation is described. Afterward, g-CN/polymer films can be obtained through spin coating on glass substrates. As such, the present material provides an improved process toward further application of g-CN in thin films. Moreover, an improved dispersibility in organic solvent was realized after grafting and functional groups (such as epoxides) were introduced to g-CN. Subsequently, the epoxy groups were utilized for further functionalization to adjust the surface polarity.
