Visualization of Bubble Nucleation and Growth Confined in 2D Flakes

In Situ Mapping of Activity Distribution of V(II)/V(III) and Onset Potential Distribution of Hydrogen Evolution Side Reaction in Vanadium Flow Batteries

Vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) face a challenge with the low reaction rates of the V(II)/V(III) redox couple, which limits the performance of VFBs. Additionally, the negative electrode in VFBs is often accompanied by the persistent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is difficult to eliminate. Therefore, understanding the spatial distribution of activity on the negative electrode and the HER side reaction on the electrode surface is of critical importance. This study proposes a weak measurement imaging method to characterize the spatial distribution of surface activity and HER onset potential on the negative electrode in VFBs). This method enables the visualization and in situ detection of key parameters such as the absolute values of |ipa |, |ipc |, |∆E|, |ipc /ipa |, and the HER onset potential. By comparing three different types of graphite felts with varying activity levels, it validates the feasibility of this method. Furthermore, electrochemical stability tests are conducted to study the electrodes repeatability, uniformity, and durability. This method holds promise in guiding the design of electrodes with enhanced activity, good reversibility, minimized HER side reactions, and uniform distribution.

Dynamic Observations on Formation of Coffee-Ring Structures from the Degradation of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Nanomaterials of halide perovskites have attracted increasing attention for their remarkable potential in optoelectronic devices, but their instability to environmental factors is the core issue impeding their applications. In this context, the microscopic understanding of their structural degradation mechanisms upon external stimuli remains incomplete. Herein, we took an emerging member of this material family, Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals (NCs), as an example and investigated the degradation pathways as well as underlying mechanisms under an electron beam by using in situ transmission electron microscopy. Our atomic-scale study identified the distinct degradation stages for the NCs toward interesting coffee-ring PbBr2 structures, which are caused by the organic surface capping agents as well as surface energy of NCs. Our findings present a fundamental insight for the degradation of halide perovskite NCs and may provide indispensable guidance for their structural design and stability improvement.

Discovering Reactant Supply Pathways at Electrode/PEM Reaction Interfaces Via a Tailored Interface-Visible Characterization Cell

In situ and micro-scale visualization of electrochemical reactions and multiphase transports on the interface of porous transport electrode (PTE) materials and solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) has been one of the greatest challenges for electrochemical energy conversion devices, such as proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cells (PEMECs), CO₂ reduction electrolyzers, PEM fuel cells, etc. Here, an interface-visible characterization cell (IV-CC) is developed to in situ visualize micro-scaled and rapid electrochemical reactions and transports in PTE/SPE interfaces. Taking the PEMEC of a green hydrogen generator as a study case, the unanticipated local gas blockage, micro water droplets, and their evolution processes are successfully visualized on PTE/PEM interfaces in a practical PEMEC device, indicating the existence of unconventional reactant supply pathways in PEMs. Further comprehensive results reveal that PEM water supplies to reaction interfaces are significantly impacted with current densities. These results provide critical insights about the reaction interface optimization and mass transport enhancement in various electrochemical energy conversion devices.

Confined Electrochemical Behaviors of Single Platinum Nanoparticles Revealing Ultrahigh Density of Gas Molecules inside a Nanobubble

Understanding the basic physicochemical properties of gas molecules confined within nanobubbles is of fundamental importance for chemical and biological processes. Here, we successfully monitored the nanobubble-confined electrochemical behaviors of single platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) at a carbon fiber ultramicroelectrode in HClO₄ and H₂O₂ solution. Due to the catalytic decomposition of H₂O₂, a single oxygen nanobubble was formed on individual PtNPs to block the active surface of particles for proton reduction and to suppress their stochastic motion, resulting in significantly distinguished current traces. Furthermore, the combination of theoretical calculations and high-resolution electrochemical measurements allowed the nanobubble size and the oxygen gas density inside a single nanobubble to be quantified. Moreover, the ultrahigh oxygen density inside (1046 kg/m³) was revealed, indicating that gas molecules in a nanosized space existed with a high state of aggregation. Our approach sheds light on the gas aggregation behaviors of nanoscale bubbles using single-entity electrochemical measurements.

Atomic-scale mechanisms on the stepwise growth of MoxW1-xS2 into hexagonal flakes

The systematic in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis suggests three stepwise formation stages during the growth of Mo_xW_1-xS₂ hexagonal flakes, which are the initial assembly of precursors into vertical structures, subsequent transition into horizontal structures, and final surface relaxing and faceting into hexagonal flakes.

Multistep nucleation visualized during solid-state crystallization

Mechanisms of nucleation have been debated for more than a century, despite successes of classical nucleation theory. The nucleation process has been recently argued as involving a nonclassical mechanism (the "two-step" mechanism) in which an intermediate step occurs before the formation of a nascent ordered phase. However, a thorough understanding of this mechanism, in terms of both microscopic kinetics and thermodynamics, remains experimentally challenging. Here, in situ observations using transmission electron microscopy on a solid-state nucleation case indicate that early-stage crystallization can follow the non-classical pathway, yet proceed via a more complex manner in which multiple metastable states precede the emergence of a stable nucleus. The intermediate steps were sequentially isolated as spinodal decomposition of amorphous precursor, mass transport and structural oscillations between crystalline and amorphous states. Our experimental and theoretical analyses support the idea that the energetic favorability is the driving force for the observed sequence of events. Due to the broad applicability of solid-state crystallization, the findings of this study offer new insights into modern nucleation theory and a potential avenue for materials design.
