Structured Ultra-Flyweight Aerogels by Interfacial Complexation: Self-Assembly Enabling Multiscale Designs

Nano-enabled smart and functional materials toward human well-being and sustainable developments

Fabrication and operation on increasingly smaller dimensions have been highly integrated with the development of smart and functional materials, which are key to many technological innovations to meet economic and societal needs. Along with researchers worldwide, the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) has long realized the synergetic interplays between nanotechnology and functional materials and designated 'Smart & Functional Materials' as one of its four major research themes. Thus far, WIN researchers have utilized the properties of smart polymers, nanoparticles, and nanocomposites to develop active materials, membranes, films, adhesives, coatings, and devices with novel and improved properties and capabilities. In this review article, we aim to highlight some of the recent developments on the subject, including our own research and key research literature, in the context of the UN Sustainability development goals.

Biofabrication with microbial cellulose: from bioadaptive designs to living materials

Nanocellulose is not only a renewable material but also brings functions that are opening new technological opportunities. Here we discuss a special subset of this material, in its fibrillated form, which is produced by aerobic microorganisms, namely, bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). BNC offers distinct advantages over plant-derived counterparts, including high purity and high degree of polymerization as well as crystallinity, strength, and water-holding capacity, among others. More remarkably, beyond classical fermentative protocols, it is possible to grow BNC on non-planar interfaces, opening new possibilities in the assembly of advanced bottom-up structures. In this review, we discuss the recent advances in the area of BNC-based biofabrication of three-dimensional (3D) designs by following solid- and soft-material templating. These methods are shown as suitable platforms to achieve bioadaptive constructs comprising highly interlocked biofilms that can be tailored with precise control over nanoscale morphological features. BNC-based biofabrication opens applications that are not possible by using traditional manufacturing routes, including direct ink writing of hydrogels. This review emphasizes the critical contributions of microbiology, colloid and surface science, as well as additive manufacturing in achieving bioadaptive designs from living matter. The future impact of BNC biofabrication is expected to take advantage of material and energy integration, residue utilization, circularity and social latitudes. Leveraging existing infrastructure, the scaleup of biofabrication routes will contribute to a new generation of advanced materials rooted in exciting synergies that combine biology, chemistry, engineering and material sciences.

Multiphase Under-Liquid Biofabrication With Living Soft Matter: A Route to Customize Functional Architectures With Microbial Nanocellulose

The growth of aerobic microbes at air-water interfaces typically leads to biofilm formation. Herein, a fermentative alternative that relies on oil-water interfaces to support bacterial activity and aerotaxis is introduced. The process uses under-liquid biofabrication by structuring bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) to achieve tailorable architectures. Cellulose productivity in static conditions is first evaluated using sets of oil homologues, classified in order of polarity. The oils are shown for their ability to sustain bacterial growth and BNC production according to air transfer and solubilization, both of which impact the physiochemical properties of the produced biofilms. The latter are investigated in terms of their morphological (fibril size and network density), structural (crystallinity) and physical-mechanical (surface area and strength) features. The introduced under-liquid biofabrication is demonstrated for the generation of BNC-based macroscale architectures and compartmentalized soft matter. This can be accomplished following three different routes, namely, 3D under-liquid networking (multi-layer hydrogels/composites), emulsion templating (capsules, emulgels, porous materials), and anisotropic layering (Janus membranes). Overall, the proposed platform combines living matter and multi-phase systems as a robust option for material development with relevance in biomedicine, soft robotics, and bioremediation, among others.

Structured Emulgels by Interfacial Assembly of Terpenes and Nanochitin

Interfacial assemblies formed by colloidal complexation are effective in multiphase stabilization, as shown in structured liquids and Pickering emulgels. Herein, we demonstrate a type of biobased colloidal system that spontaneously stabilizes an organic phase in a continuous hydrogel phase. Specifically, a triterpene extracted from bark (betulin, BE) is added to an organic phase containing a coniferous resin (rosin acid, a diterpene). BE is shown to take part in strong noncovalent interactions with the nanochitin dispersed in the aqueous (hydrogel) phase, leading to a complex of high interfacial activity. The viscoelastic response of the system is rationalized by the presence of a superstable structured dual network. When used as a templating material, the emulgel develops into structured liquids and cryogels. The herein introduced all-biobased type of nanoparticle surfactant system forms a gel ("emulsion-filled" with "aggregated droplets") that features the functional benefits of both betulin and nanochitin.

Functional Janus structured liquids and aerogels

Janus structures have unique properties due to their distinct functionalities on opposing faces, but have yet to be realized with flowing liquids. We demonstrate such Janus liquids with a customizable distribution of nanoparticles (NPs) throughout their structures by joining two aqueous streams of NP dispersions in an apolar liquid. Using this anisotropic integration platform, different magnetic, conductive, or non-responsive NPs can be spatially confined to opposite sides of the original interface using magnetic graphene oxide (mGO)/GO, Ti3C2Tx/GO, or GO suspensions. The resultant Janus liquids can be used as templates for versatile, responsive, and mechanically robust aerogels suitable for piezoresistive sensing, human motion monitoring, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding with a tuned absorption mechanism. The EMI shields outperform their current counterparts in terms of wave absorption, i.e., SET ≈ 51 dB, SER ≈ 0.4 dB, and A = 0.91, due to their high porosity ranging from micro- to macro-scales along with non-interfering magnetic and conductive networks imparted by the Janus architecture.

Liquid-Templating Aerogels

Modern materials science has witnessed the era of advanced fabrication methods to engineer functionality from the nano- to macroscales. Versatile fabrication and additive manufacturing methods are developed, but the ability to design a material for a given application is still limited. Here, a novel strategy that enables target-oriented manufacturing of ultra-lightweight aerogels with on-demand characteristics is introduced. The process relies on controllable liquid templating through interfacial complexation to generate tunable, stimuli-responsive 3D-structured (multiphase) filamentous liquid templates. The methodology involves nanoscale chemistry and microscale assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) at liquid-liquid interfaces to produce hierarchical macroscopic aerogels featuring multiscale porosity, ultralow density (3.05-3.41 mg cm-3 ), and high compressibility (90%) combined with elastic resilience and instant shape recovery. The challenges are overcome facing ultra-lightweight aerogels, including poor mechanical integrity and the inability to form predefined 3D constructs with on-demand functionality, for a multitude of applications. The controllable nature of the coined methodology enables tunable electromagnetic interference shielding with high specific shielding effectiveness (39 893 dB cm2 g-1 ), and one of the highest-ever reported oil-absorption capacities (487 times the initial weight of aerogel for chloroform), to be obtained. These properties originate from the engineerable nature of liquid templating, pushing the boundaries of lightweight materials to systematic function design and applications.

Super-Macroporous Lightweight Materials Templated from Bicontinuous Intra-Phase Jammed Emulsion Gels Based on Nanochitin

Non-equilibrium multiphase systems are formed by mixing two immiscible nanoparticle dispersions, leading to bicontinuous emulsions that template cryogels with interconnected, tortuous channels. Herein, a renewable, rod-like biocolloid (chitin nanocrystals, ChNC) is used to kinetically arrest bicontinuous morphologies. Specifically, it is found that ChNC stabilizes intra-phase jammed bicontinuous systems at an ultra-low particle concentration (as low as 0.6 wt.%), leading to tailorable morphologies. The synergistic effects of ChNC high aspect ratio, intrinsic stiffness, and interparticle interactions produce hydrogelation and, upon drying, lead to open channels bearing dual characteristic sizes, suitably integrated into robust bicontinuous ultra-lightweight solids. Overall, it demonstrates the successful formation of ChNC-jammed bicontinuous emulsions and a facile emulsion templating route to synthesize chitin cryogels that form unique super-macroporous networks.

All-oil Constructs Stabilized by Cellulose Nanocrystal Surfactants

Constructing all-oil systems with desired geometries and responsiveness would produce a new class of reconfigurable materials that can be used for applications that are not compatible with water or aqueous systems, a fascinating goal to achieve but severely limited by the lack of surfactants. Here, we demonstrate an efficient strategy to stabilize oil-oil interfaces by using the co-assembly between the cellulose nanocrystal and amine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-NH₂). Cellulose nanocrystal surfactants (CNCSs) form and assemble in situ at the interface, showing significantly enhanced binding energy and acid-dependent interfacial activity. When CNCSs jam at the interface, a robust assembly with exceptional mechanical properties can be achieved, allowing the 3D printing of all-oil devices on demand. Using CNCSs as emulsifiers, oil-in-oil high internal phase emulsions can be prepared by one-step homogenization and, when used as templates, porous materials that require water-sensitive monomers can be synthesized. These results open a new platform for stabilizing and structuring all-oil systems, providing numerous applications for microreactors, encapsulation, delivery, and tissue engineering scaffolds.

Hollow Gradient-Structured Iron-Anchored Carbon Nanospheres for Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Highlights

Microwave absorber with nanoscale gradient structure was proposed for enhancing the electromagnetic absorption performance. Outstanding reflection loss value (−62.7 dB), broadband wave absorption (6.4 dB with only 2.1 mm thickness) in combination with flexible adjustment abilities were acquired, which is superior to other relative graded distribution structures. This strategy initiates a new method for designing and controlling wave absorber with excellent impedance matching property in practical applications.

Abstract

In the present paper, a microwave absorber with nanoscale gradient structure was proposed for enhancing the electromagnetic absorption performance. The inorganic–organic competitive coating strategy was employed, which can effectively adjust the thermodynamic and kinetic reactions of iron ions during the solvothermal process. As a result, Fe nanoparticles can be gradually decreased from the inner side to the surface across the hollow carbon shell. The results reveal that it offers an outstanding reflection loss value in combination with broadband wave absorption and flexible adjustment ability, which is superior to other relative graded distribution structures and satisfied with the requirements of lightweight equipment. In addition, this work elucidates the intrinsic microwave regulation mechanism of the multiscale hybrid electromagnetic wave absorber. The excellent impedance matching and moderate dielectric parameters are exhibited to be the dominative factors for the promotion of microwave absorption performance of the optimized materials. This strategy to prepare gradient-distributed microwave absorbing materials initiates a new way for designing and fabricating wave absorber with excellent impedance matching property in practical applications.
