Multifunctional Mesoporous Polyaniline/Graphene Nanosheets for Flexible Planar Integrated Microsystem of Zinc Ion Microbattery and Gas Sensor

Supramolecular channels via crown ether functionalized polyaniline for proton-self-doped cathode in aqueous zinc-ion battery

Polyaniline (PANI) has been widely used as a cathode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) because of its attractive conductivity and energy storage capability. However, the extensive application of PANI is limited by spontaneous deprotonation and slow diffusion kinetics. Herein, an 18-crown-6-functionalised PANI pseudorotaxane (18C6@PANI) cathode is successfully developed through a facile template-directed polymerisation reaction. The 18C6@PANI cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 256 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A/g, excellent rate performance of 134 mAh g-1 at 6 A/g and outstanding cycle stability at a high current density of 3 A/g over 10,000 cycles. Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrate the formation of the -N-Zn-O- structure. The abundant supramolecular channels in pseudorotaxane, induced by crown ether functional groups, are beneficial for achieving superior cyclability and rate capability. These encouraging results highlight the potential for designing more efficient PANI-based cathodes for high-performance AZIBs.

Biomimetic Superstructured Interphase for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

The practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is greatly challenged by rampant dendrites and pestilent side reactions resulting from an unstable Zn-electrolyte interphase. Herein, we report the construction of a reliable superstructured solid electrolyte interphase for stable Zn anodes by using mesoporous polydopamine (2D-mPDA) platelets as building blocks. The interphase shows a biomimetic nacre's "brick-and-mortar" structure and artificial transmembrane channels of hexagonally ordered mesopores in the plane, overcoming the mechanical robustness and ionic conductivity trade-off. Experimental results and simulations reveal that the -OH and -NH groups on the surface of artificial ion channels can promote rapid desolvation kinetics and serve as an ion sieve to homogenize the Zn2+ flux, thus inhibiting side reactions and ensuring uniform Zn deposition without dendrites. The 2D-mPDA@Zn electrode achieves an ultralow nucleation potential of 35 mV and maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% over 1500 cycles at 5 mA cm-2. Moreover, the symmetric battery exhibits a prolonged lifespan of over 580 h at a high current density of 20 mA cm-2. This biomimetic superstructured interphase also demonstrates the high feasibility in Zn//VO2 full cells and paves a new route for rechargeable aqueous metal-ion batteries.

Recent Advances on Stretchable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries for Wearable Electronics

The rapid development of wearable electronics has stimulated the pursuit of advanced stretchable power sources. As a promising candidate, stretchable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), have attracted unprecedented attention owing to their intrinsic safety, low cost, environmental benignity, and high performance, and can be endowed with additional functionalities to broaden the applications of wearable electronics. Here, a comprehensive review on the latest advances of stretchable AZIBs is presented. The materials and methods for stretchable components in AZIBs are first summarized, covering current collectors, electrodes, electrolytes/separators, and encapsulating layers. Subsequently, the benefits of the coplanar, fiber-shaped, and sandwiched configurations for stretchable AZIBs are analyzed. Moreover, the additional features integrated into stretchable AZIBs are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and prospects of stretchable AZIBs for wearable applications in the future are proposed.

First-principles study on α/β/γ-FeB6 monolayers as potential gas sensor for H2S and SO2

CONTEXT

The adsorptions of toxic gases SO2 and H2S on 2D α/β/γ-FeB6 monolayer were investigated using density functional theory calculations. To analyze the interaction between gas molecule H2S/SO2 and α/β/γ-FeB6 monolayer, we calculated adsorption energy, adsorption distance, Mullikan charge, charge density difference, band structure, the density of states, work function, and theoretical recovery time. The adsorption energies show that H2S/SO2 is chemisorbed on α/β-FeB6 while H2S/SO2 is physiosorbed on γ-FeB6 monolayer. As a result, γ-FeB6 has a short recovery time for H2S (5.71×10-8 s)/SO2 (1.94×10-5 s) due to modest adsorption. Therefore, γ-FeB6 may be a promising candidate for reusable H2S/SO2 sensors at room temperature. Although H2S is chemisorbed on α/β-FeB6, as the working temperature rises to 500 K, the recovery time of α/β-FeB6 for H2S can decrease to 1.13×10-1 s and 2.08×10-1 s, respectively, which are well within the detectable range. So, α/β-FeB6 monolayer also may be a good candidate for H2S gas sensor.

METHODS

Calculations were performed at GGA-PBE/DNP level using the Dmol3 module implemented in the Material Studio 2018 software package.

Melanin and Polypyrrole-Coated Nanocellulose Hydrogel Networks for Environmental Sensing and Energy Storage

Melanins are black-brown pigments of a specific class of poly indolequinones found in nature and in the human body. They are responsible for photoprotection, radical scavenging, and metal ion chelation. Recently, there has been significant interest in eumelanin as a functional material due to its macromolecular structure and the exploitation of the quinone-hydroquinone redox equilibrium. While eumelanin can be used in many promising applications, it is insoluble in most solvents, limiting its processing into homogeneous materials and coatings. A promising approach is to use a carrier system to stabilize eumelanin by incorporating cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), a nanoscopic material that originates from plant biomass. In this work, a flexible network consisting of CNFs coupled with vapor-phase polymerized conductive polypyrrole (PPy) is utilized to form a functional eumelanin hydrogel composite (MelaGel) for environmental sensing and battery applications. Flexible sensors for detecting pH or metal ions made from MelaGel can detect both pH values in a range from 4 to 10 and metal ions like zinc(II), copper(II), and iron(III), paving the way for environmental and biomedical sensor applications. The reduced internal resistance in the MelaGel leads to improved charge storage ability compared to synthetic eumelanin composite electrodes. Other noteworthy advantages of the MelaGel are the amphiphilic nature of PPy and the additionally offered redox centers. Lastly, this material was tested in aqueous electrolyte zinc coin cells, where it was shown to have charge/discharge stability for over 1200 cycles, showcasing this MelaGel composite as a promising eumelanin-based composite hybrid sensor/energy storage material.

Zn Microbatteries Explore Ways for Integrations in Intelligent Systems

As intelligent microsystems develop, many revolutionary applications, such as the swallowing surgeon proposed by Richard Feynman, are about to evolve. Nonetheless, integrable energy storage satisfying the demand for autonomous operations has emerged as a major obstacle to the deployment of intelligent microsystems. A reason for the lagging development of integrable batteries is the challenge of miniaturization through microfabrication procedures. Lithium batteries, generated by the most successful battery chemistry, are not stable in the air, thus creating major manufacturing challenges. Other cations (Na⁺ , Mg²⁺ , Al³⁺ , K⁺ ) are still in the early stages of development. In contrast, the superior stability of zinc batteries in the air brings high compatibility to microfabrication protocols and has already demonstrated excellent practicability in full-sized devices. To obtain energy-dense and high-power zinc microbatteries within square-millimeter or smaller footprints, sandwich, pillar, and Swiss-roll configurations are developed. Thin interdigital and fiber microbatteries find their applications being integrated into wearable devices and electronic skin. It is foreseeable that zinc microbatteries will find their way into highly integrated microsystems unlocking their full potential for autonomous operation. This review summarizes the material development, configuration innovation, and application-oriented integration of zinc microbatteries.

2D Materials Boost Advanced Zn Anodes: Principles, Advances, and Challenges

Aqueous zinc-ion battery (ZIB) featuring with high safety, low cost, environmentally friendly, and high energy density is one of the most promising systems for large-scale energy storage application. Despite extensive research progress made in developing high-performance cathodes, the Zn anode issues, such as Zn dendrites, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, have been observed to shorten ZIB's lifespan seriously, thus restricting their practical application. Engineering advanced Zn anodes based on two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely investigated to address these issues. With atomic thickness, 2D materials possess ultrahigh specific surface area, much exposed active sites, superior mechanical strength and flexibility, and unique electrical properties, which confirm to be a promising alternative anode material for ZIBs. This review aims to boost rational design strategies of 2D materials for practical application of ZIB by combining the fundamental principle and research progress. Firstly, the fundamental principles of 2D materials against the drawbacks of Zn anode are introduced. Then, the designed strategies of several typical 2D materials for stable Zn anodes are comprehensively summarized. Finally, perspectives on the future development of advanced Zn anodes by taking advantage of these unique properties of 2D materials are proposed.

Multi-Dimensional Molecular Self-Assembly Strategy for the Construction of Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Polydiaminopyridine and Carbon Materials

Two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous polymers, combining the advantages of organic polymers, porous materials, and 2D materials, have received great attention in adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage. However, the synthesis of 2D mesoporous polymers is not only challenged by the complex 2D structure construction, but also by the low yield and difficulty in controlling the dynamics of the assembly during the generation of mesopores. Herein, a facile multi-dimensional molecular self-assembly strategy is reported for the preparation of 2D mesoporous polydiaminopyridines (MPDAPs), which features tunable pore sizes (17-35 nm) and abundant N content up to 18.0 at%. Benefitting from the abundant N sites, 2D nanostructure, and uniform-large mesopores, the 2D MPDAPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. After calcination under N₂ atmosphere, the obtained 2D N-doped mesoporous carbon (NMCs) with large and uniform pore sizes, high surface areas, abundant N content (up to 23.1%), and a high ratio of basic N species (57.0% pyridinic N and 35.9% pyrrolic N) can show an excellent CO₂ uptake density (11.7 µmol m^-2 at 273 K), higher than previously reported porous materials.
