Ultrafine Ruthenium Clusters Shell-Embedded Hollow Carbon Spheres as Nanoreactors for Channel Microenvironment-Modulated Furfural Tandem Hydrogenation

Toward High-Performance Hydrogenation at Room Temperature Through Tailoring Nickel Catalysts Stable in Aqueous Solution

The development of highly active, reusable catalysts for aqueous-phase reactions is challenging. Herein, metallic nickel is encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon-silica composite (SiO2@Ni@NC) as a catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of vanillin in aqueous media. The constructed catalyst achieved 99.8% vanillin conversion and 100% 4-hydroxymethyl-2-methoxyphenol selectivity at room temperature. Based on combined scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman analyses, the satisfactory catalytic performance is attributed to the composite structure consisting of an active metal, carbon, and silica. The hydrophilic silica core promoted dispersion of the catalyst in aqueous media. Moreover, the external hydrophobic NC layer has multiple functions, including preventing oxidation or leaching of the internal metal, acting as a reducing agent to reduce the internal metal, regulating the active-site microenvironment by enriching the concentrations of H2 and organic reactants, and modifying the electronic structure of the active metal via metal-support interactions. Density functional theory calculations indicated that NC facilitates vanillin adsorption and hydrogen dissociation to promote aqueous-phase hydrogenation. This study provides an efficient strategy for constructing encapsulated Ni-based amphiphilic catalysts to upgrade biomass-derived compounds.

Surface-Controlled CdS/Ti3 C2 MXene Schottky Junction for Highly Selective and Active Photocatalytic Dehydrogenation-Reductive Amination

Photocatalytic valorization and selective transformation of biomass-derived platform compounds offer great opportunities for efficient utilization of renewable resources under mild conditions. Here, the novel three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like CdS/Ti3 C2 Schottky junction (MCdS) composed of surface-controlled CdS and pretreated Ti3 C2 MXene is created for photocatalytic dehydrogenation-reductive amination of biomass-derived amino acid production under ambient temperature with unprecedented activity and selectivity. Schottky junction efficiently promotes photoexcited charge migration and separation and inhibits photogenerated electron-hole recombination, which results in a super-high activity. Meanwhile, CdS with the reduced surface energy supplies sufficient hydrogen sources for imine reduction and induces the preferential orientation of alanine, thus contributing superior selectivity. Moreover, a wide range of hydroxyl acids are successfully converted into corresponding amino acids and even one-pot conversion of glucose to alanine is easily achieved over MCdS. This work illustrates the mechanism of crystal orientation control and heterojunction construction in controlling catalytic behavior of photocatalytic nanoreactor, providing a paradigm for construction of MXene-based heterostructure.

Accelerated Catalytic Ozonation in a Mesoporous Carbon-Supported Atomic Fe-N4 Sites Nanoreactor: Confinement Effect and Resistance to Poisoning

The design of a micro-/nanoreactor is of great significance for catalytic ozonation, which can achieve effective mass transfer and expose powerful reaction species. Herein, the mesoporous carbon with atomic Fe-N4 sites embedded in the ordered carbon nanochannels (Fe-N4/CMK-3) was synthesized by the hard-template method. Fe-N4/CMK-3 can be employed as nanoreactors with preferred electronic and geometric catalytic microenvironments for the internal catalytic ozonation of CH3SH. During the CH3SH oxidation process, the mass transfer coefficient of the Fe-N4/CMK-3 confined system with sufficient O3 transfer featured a level of at least 1.87 × 10-5, which is 34.6 times that of the Fe-N4/C-Si unconfined system. Detailed experimental studies and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the anchored atomic Fe-N4 sites and nanoconfinement effects regulated the local electronic structure of the catalyst and promoted the activation of O3 molecules to produce atomic oxygen species (AOS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), eventually achieving efficient oxidation of CH3SH into CO2/SO42-. Benefiting from the high diffusion rate and the augmentation of AOS/ROS, Fe-N4/CMK-3 exhibited an excellent poisoning tolerance, along with high catalytic durability. This contribution provides the proof-of-concept strategy for accelerating catalytic ozonation of sulfur-containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by combining confined catalysis and atomic catalysts and can be extended to the purification of other gaseous pollutants.

Molecular Diffusion in Nanoreactors' Pore Channel System: Measurement Techniques, Structural Regulation, and Catalytic Effects

Nanoreactors, as a new class of materials with highly enriched and ordered pore channel structures, can achieve special catalytic effects by precisely identifying and controlling the molecular diffusion behavior within the ordered pore channel system. Nanoreactors-driven molecular diffusion within the ordered pore channels can be highly dependent on the local microenvironment in the nanoreactors' pore channel system. Although the diffusion process of molecules within the ordered pore channels of nanoreactors is crucial for the regulation of catalytic behaviors, it has not yet been as clearly elucidated as it deserves to be in this study. In this review, fundamental theory and measurement techniques for molecular diffusion in the pore channel system of nanoreactors are presented, structural regulation strategies of pore channel parameters for controlling molecular diffusion are discussed, and the effects of molecular diffusion in the pore channel system on catalytic reactivity and selectivity are further analyzed. This article attempts to further develop the underlying theory of molecular diffusion within the theoretical framework of nanoreactor-driven catalysis, and the proposed perspectives may contribute to the rational design of advanced catalytic materials and the precise control of complex catalytic kinetics.

Solvent Effects Enable Efficient Tandem Conversion of Cellulose and Its Monosaccharides Towards 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

The biomass-derived platform compound 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been hailed as the "Sleeping Giant" due to its promising applications, and it occupies a critical spot in the biomass upgrading roadmap. HMF is typically produced from cellulose and its monosaccharides via a complex tandem conversion with multiple steps (i. e., cellulose depolymerization, glucose isomerization, fructose dehydration, etc.). Previous investigations have confirmed the irreplaceable contribution of solvents in regulating the tandem conversion of cellulose and its monosaccharides to HMF. However, the potential effects of solvents in contributing to this multi-step tandem process have not yet been clearly elucidated. In this context, this Review aims to provide in-depth insights into the intrinsic interactions between solvent system and substrate conversion (cellulose and its monosaccharides conversion), reaction regulation (reaction activity and selectivity regulation), as well as product acquisition (humins formation inhibition and product purification). It attempts to elucidate specific solvent effects to promote a more efficient tandem conversion of cellulose and its monosaccharides towards HMF. The insights provided in this Review may contribute to a more sustainable HMF production from biomass feedstocks and a further development of greener solvent systems.

Kinetics Driven by Hollow Nanoreactors: An Opportunity for Controllable Catalysis

As a novel class of catalytic materials, hollow nanoreactors offer new opportunities for improving catalytic performance owing to their higher controllability on molecular kinetic behavior. Nevertheless, to achieve controllable catalysis with specific purposes, the catalytic mechanism occurring inside hollow nanoreactors remains to be further understood. In this context, this Review presents a focused discussion about the basic concept of hollow nanoreactors, the underlying theory for hollow nanoreactor-driven kinetics, and the intrinsic correlation between key structural parameters of hollow nanoreactors and molecular kinetic behaviors. We aim to provide in-depth insights into understanding kinetics occurred within typical hollow nanoreactors. The perspectives proposed in this paper may contribute to the development of the fundamental theoretical framework of hollow nanoreactor-driven catalysis.
