Achieving Ultralong-Cycle Zinc-Ion Battery via Synergistically Electronic and Structural Regulation of a MnO2 Nanocrystal-Carbon Hybrid Framework

Multi-layered carbon accommodation of MnO2 enabling fast kinetics for highly stable zinc ion batteries

Large-scale durable aqueous zinc ion batteries for stationary storage are realized by spray-coating conductive PEDOT(Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) wrapping MnO2/carbon microspheres hybrid cathode in this work. The porous carbon microspheres with multiple layers deriving from sucrose provide suitable accommodation for MnO2 active materials, exposing more redox active sites and enhancing the contact surface between electrolyte and active materials. As a result, MnO2/microspheres are adhered to the current collector by a conductive PEDOT coating without any binder. The ternary design retards the structural degradation during cycling and shortens the electron and ion transport path, rendering the full batteries high capacity and long cycle stability. The resulting batteries perform the capacity of 277, 227, 110, 85 and 50 mAh/g at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 A/g, respectively. After 3000 cycles the initial capacity retains 86%, and 80% after 5000 cycles. GITT indicates PEDOT wrapping MnO2/microspheres cathode enables better ion intercalating kinetics than conventional MnO2. The work could represent a novel and significant step forward in the studies on the large-scale application of zinc ion batteries.

Advancements in Manganese-Based Cathode for Sustainable Energy Utilization

Manganese-based compounds, especially manganese oxides, are one of the most exceptional electrode materials. Specifically, manganese oxides have gained significant interest owing to their unique crystal structures, high theoretical capacity, abundant natural availability and eco-friendly nature. However, as transition metal semiconductors, manganese oxide possess low electrical conductivity, limited rate capacity, and suboptical cycle stability. Thus, combining manganese oxides with carbon or other metallic materials can significantly improve their electrochemical performance. These composites increase active sites and conductivity, thereby improving electrode reaction kinetics, cycle stability, and lifespan of supercapacitors (SCs) and batteries. This paper reviews the latest applications of Mn-based cathodes in SCs and advanced batteries. Moreover, the energy storage mechanisms were also proposed. In this review, the development prospects and challenges for advanced energy storage applications of Mn-based cathodes are summarized.

Construction of Cation-Sieving Function Layers Enabling Dendrite-Free Zinc Metal Anodes for Durable Aqueous Systems

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered as promising candidates for safe and green energy storage. Yet, Zn anodes still suffer from serious challenges. Herein, an effective cation-sieve of polyethersulfone-modified sulfonated polyether ether ketone is developed as protective coating layer of the Zn anodes. Cation-only transmission and dense property of the layer can protect the Zn from active water and anions, inhibiting corrosion, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and passivation. Zincophilic property of the layer can homogenize Zn2+ flow, and promote uniform plating of Zn. Therefore, protected symmetric Zn||Zn cell can maintain as long as 5600 h with a low polarization at 1.0 mA cm-2 and 0.5 mAh cm-2, and still long as 800 h at 5.0 mA cm-2 and 5.0 mAh cm-2. It is found that not only the dendrites but also the popular existed passivation product of Zn4SO4(OH)6·5H2O can be inhibited effectively. In asymmetric Zn||Ti cells, average Coulombic efficiency can reach 98.2%, suggesting corrosion and HER are restrained effectively. Matched with MnO2 cathode, full cells using coated Zn exhibit much better cycling performance than that using bare Zn. Moreover, Zn4O3(SO4)·7H2O (ZSH)-assisted reversible conversion mechanism between the ZSH and ZnxHyMnO2 is revealed through operando Raman.

Insights into the cycling stability of manganese-based zinc-ion batteries: from energy storage mechanisms to capacity fluctuation and optimization strategies

Manganese-based materials are considered as one of the most promising cathodes in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) for large-scale energy storage applications owing to their cost-effectiveness, natural availability, low toxicity, multivalent states, high operation voltage, and satisfactory capacity. However, their intricate energy storage mechanisms coupled with unsatisfactory cycling stability hinder their commercial applications. Previous reviews have primarily focused on optimization strategies for achieving high capacity and fast reaction kinetics, while overlooking capacity fluctuation and lacking a systematic discussion on strategies to enhance the cycling stability of these materials. Thus, in this review, the energy storage mechanisms of manganese-based ZIBs with different structures are systematically elucidated and summarized. Next, the capacity fluctuation in manganese-based ZIBs, including capacity activation, degradation, and dynamic evolution in the whole cycle calendar are comprehensively analyzed. Finally, the constructive optimization strategies based on the reaction chemistry of one-electron and two-electron transfers for achieving durable cycling performance in manganese-based ZIBs are proposed.

Oxygen defects engineering and structural strengthening of hydrated vanadium oxide cathode by coating glucose hydrothermal carbon and pre-embedding Mn (II) ion for high-capacity aqueous zinc ion batteries

Vanadium oxide-based cathode with unique layered structure is considered as a candidate for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Unfortunately, considering poor electronic conductivity, sluggish diffusion kinetics, and the destruction of layered structures in the cycling process, the actual capacity and rate capability are constrained. Herein, the glucose hydrothermal carbon (GHC) and transition metal Mn2+ ion have been utilized to incorporate hydrated vanadium oxide (Mn-VOH@GHC). The oxygen vacancies defects of VOH, induced by GHC anchored on surface and Mn2+ inserted between interlayers, provides more active sites, higher electronic conductivity, and faster ion diffusion. In addition, GHC reinforces the integrity of external structure, while Mn2+ ion acts as structural pillars to support the interlayer structure. The Mn-VOH@GHC electrode can produce a high capacity of 530 mAh/g at the current density of 0.2 A/g thanks to these crucial properties, and after 2000 cycles at a high current density of 2 A/g, it can also produce a reversible capacity of 344 mAh/g. The results suggest that the synergistic effect of defect engineering and metal ion pre-insertion provides a new idea in enhancement of the electrochemical performance of AZIBs cathode materials.

Recent progress of MOF-functionalized nanocomposites: From structure to properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.
