Strategies for Rapid NMR Rheometry by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Velocimetry

On the validation of magnetic resonance velocimetry in single-phase turbulent pipe flows

A nuclear magnetic resonance imaging technique is used to measure velocity distributions in turbulent pipe flows up to Re=24580. While turbulent intensity is usually determined from signal attenuation, we deduce turbulent intensity from velocity distribution with no need to suppose a gaussian distribution for velocity fluctuations. Skewness and flatness measurements are also presented in this paper. Comparison with DNS show good agreement and we show that NMR data is sufficently accurate to provide turbulent viscosity profile. The low field system used in this study allow the suppression of susceptibility artifacts and thus open its use for studying two-phase flows. We postulate that the method used here could be applied to two-phase flows and would thus provide valuable information on turbulent viscosity models.

Spatially resolved emulsion droplet sizing using inverse Abel transforms

Pulsed field gradient (PFG) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is well established as a tool for determining emulsion droplet-size distributions via measurement of restricted self-diffusion. Most measurements made to date have not been spatially resolved, but have measured an average size distribution for a certain volume of emulsion. This paper demonstrates a rapid method of performing spatially resolved, restricted diffusion measurements, which enables emulsion droplet sizing to be spatially resolved as a function of radius in cylindrical geometries or pipes. This is achieved by the use of an Abel transform. The technique is demonstrated in various annular systems containing two emulsions, with different droplet-size distributions, and/or a pure fluid. It is also shown that by modifying the pulse sequence by the inclusion of flow-compensating magnetic field gradients, the technique can measure spatially resolved droplet-size distributions in flowing emulsions, with potential applications in spatially resolved on-line droplet-size analysis.

Magnetic resonance microimaging and numerical simulations of velocity fields inside enlarged flow cells used for coupled NMR microseparations

The coupling of various chemical microseparation methods with small-scale NMR detection is a growing area in analytical chemistry. The formation of enlarged flow cells within the active volume of the NMR detector can significantly increase the coil filling factor and hence the signal-to-noise ratio of the NMR spectra. However, flow cells can also lead to deterioration of the separation efficiency due to the development of complex flow patterns, the form of which depend on the particular geometry of the flow cell and the flow rate used. In this study, we investigated the flow characteristics in different flow cell geometries relevant to the coupling of capillary liquid chromatography and NMR. Computational fluid dynamics was used to simulate fluid flow inside flow cells with a volume of approximately 1 microL. Magnetic resonance microimaging was used to measure experimentally the velocity fields inside these flow cells. The results showed good agreement between experiment and simulation and demonstrated that a relatively gradual expansion and contraction is necessary to avoid areas of weak recirculation and strong radial velocities, both of which can potentially compromise separation efficiency.

Echo-planar imaging relaxometry to measure the viscosity of a model meal

A method for measuring noninvasively the viscosity of a polysaccharide model meal using the known relationship between relaxation times and polysaccharide concentration in solution in vitro is presented. The aim is to develop a method for monitoring digesta viscosity in vivo, using EPI to capture the motion of the gastrointestinal lumen. The transverse relaxation rate T-12 of locust bean gum solutions was calibrated against the zero-shear viscosity at 37 degreesC. Differences in viscosity were distinguished significantly using T-12 measurements. T-12 and viscosity were insensitive to exposure to gastric juice and changes in pH, and the model meal was well received by volunteers and provided good contrast in vivo in EPI images. Therefore it would be possible to use this method to monitor the changes in meal viscosity within the gastric lumen in vivo.

Rapid MRI and velocimetry of cylindrical Couette flow

A narrow-gap, temperature-controlled Couette flow rheometer has been developed to study fluid velocities within the annular gap between two concentric cylinders by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging and velocimetry. Alternative pulsed-field-gradient-based nuclear magnetic resonance imaging strategies which may be used for measurement of velocity within the Couette flow device have been evaluated. These include two-dimensional (2-D) imaging techniques with acquisition times of several minutes and a one-dimensional (1-D) projection method which exploits the symmetry of the device to reduce overall measurement time to less than 1 min. Velocity measurements made using each technique are presented for a Newtonian fluid undergoing Couette flow at shear rates of approximately 20 and 60 s(-1).
