1-370 GHz EPR linewidths for K3CrO8: a comprehensive test for the Anderson-Weiss model

Theory of EPR lineshape in samples concentrated in paramagnetic spins: effect of enhanced internal magnetic field on high-field high-frequency (HFHF) EPR lineshape

A theoretical treatment is provided for the calculation of EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) lineshape as affected by interactions with paramagnetic ions in the vicinity. The internal fields seen by the various paramagnetic ions due to interactions with paramagnetic ions in their vicinity, as well as the resulting lineshapes, become quite significant at high magnetic fields required in high-frequency (HFHF) EPR. The resulting EPR signals for the various ions are therefore characterized by different g-shifts and lineshapes, so that the overall EPR lineshape, which is an overlap of these, becomes distorted, or even split in HFHF EPR, from that observed at lower frequencies. The observed EPR lineshapes in MnSO(4)⋅H(2)O powder and K(3)CrO(8) single-crystal samples have been simulated here taking into account g-shifts and modified lineshapes. These simulations show that in these samples, concentrated in paramagnetic spins, the position and lineshapes of EPR signals are significantly modified in HFHF EPR involving very high magnetic fields.

Direct evidence from electron paramagnetic resonance for additional configurations in uncommon paddlewheel Re2(7+) units surrounded by an unsymmetrical bicyclic guanidinate

Three rare compounds have been synthesized and structurally characterized; these species have paddlewheel structures and Re(2)(7+) cores surrounded by four bicyclic guanidinates and two axial ligands along the Re-Re axis. Each possesses a formal bond order of 3.5 and a σ(2)π(4)δ(1) electronic configuration that entails the presence of one unpaired electron for each compound. The guanidinate ligands characterized by having CH(2) entities and a central C(N)(3) unit that joins two cyclic units--one having two fused 6-membered rings (hpp) and the other having a 5- and a 6-membered ring fused together (tbn)--allowed the isolation of [Re(2)(tbn)(4)Cl(2)]PF(6), 1, [Re(2)(tbn)(4)Cl(2)]Cl, 2, and [Re(2)(hpp)(4)(O(3)SCF(3))(2)](O(3)SCF(3)), 3. Because of the larger bite angle of the tbn relative to the hpp ligand, the Re-Re bond distances in 1 and 2 (2.2691(14) and 2.2589(14) Å, respectively) are much longer than that in 3 (2.1804(8) Å). Importantly, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies at both X-band (~9.4 GHz) and W-band (112 GHz) in the solid and in frozen solution show unusually low g-values (~1.75) and the absence of zero-field splitting, providing direct evidence for the presence of one metal-based unpaired electron for both 1 and 3. These spectroscopic data suggest that the unsymmetrical 5-/6-membered ligand leads to the formation of isomers, as shown by significantly broader EPR signals for 1 than for 3, even though both compounds possess what appears to be similar ideal crystallographic axial symmetry on the X-ray time scale.

X-ray detected magnetic resonance: a unique probe of the precession dynamics of orbital magnetization components

X-ray Detected Magnetic Resonance (XDMR) is a novel spectroscopy in which X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) is used to probe the resonant precession of local magnetization components in a strong microwave pump field. We review the conceptual bases of XDMR and recast them in the general framework of the linear and nonlinear theories of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Emphasis is laid on the information content of XDMR spectra which offer a unique opportunity to disentangle the precession dynamics of spin and orbital magnetization components at given absorbing sites. For the sake of illustration, we focus on selected examples in which marked differences were found between FMR and XDMR spectra simultaneously recorded on ferrimagnetically ordered iron garnets. With pumping capabilities extended up to sub-THz frequencies, high-field XDMR should allow us to probe the precession of orbital magnetization components in paramagnetic organometallic complexes with large zero-field splitting. Even more challenging, we suggest that XDMR spectra might be recorded on selected antiferromagnetic crystals for which orbital magnetism is most often ignored in the absence of any supporting experimental evidence.

Fibrils with parallel in-register structure constitute a major class of amyloid fibrils: molecular insights from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy

The deposition of amyloid- and amyloid-like fibrils is the main pathological hallmark of numerous protein misfolding diseases including Alzheimer's disease, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, and type 2 diabetes. Besides the well-established role in disease, recent work on a variety of organisms ranging from bacteria to humans suggests that amyloid fibrils can also convey biological functions. To better understand the molecular mechanisms by which amyloidogenic proteins misfold in disease or perform biological functions, structural information is essential. Although high-resolution structural analysis of amyloid fibrils has been challenging, a combination of biophysical approaches is beginning to unravel the various structural features of amyloid fibrils. Here we review these recent developments with particular emphasis on amyloid fibrils that have been studied using site-directed spin labeling and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. This approach has been used to define the precise location of fibril-forming core regions and identify local secondary structures within such core regions. Perhaps one of the most remarkable findings arrived at by site-directed spin labeling was that most fibrils that contain an extensive core region of 20 amino acids or more share a common parallel in-register arrangement of beta strands. The preference for this arrangement can be explained on topological grounds and may be rationalized by the maximization of hydrophobic contact surface.

Investigation of the Electronic and Structural Properties of Potassium Hexaboride, KB6, by Transport, Magnetic Susceptibility, EPR, and NMR Measurements, Temperature-Dependent Crystal Structure Determination, and Electronic Band Structure Calculations

The electronic and structural properties of potassium hexaboride, KB(6), were examined by transport, magnetic susceptibility, EPR, and NMR measurements, temperature-dependent crystal structure determination, and electronic band structure calculations. The valence bands of KB(6) are partially empty, but the electrical resistivity of KB(6) reveals that it is not a normal metal. The magnetic susceptibility as well as EPR and NMR measurements show the presence of localized electrons in KB(6). The EPR spectra of KB(6) have two peaks, a broad ( approximately 320 G) and a narrow (less than approximately 27 G) line width, and the temperature-dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of KB(6) exhibits a strong hysteresis below 70 K. The temperature-dependent crystal structure determination of KB(6) shows the occurrence of an unusual variation in the unit cell parameter hence supporting that the hysteresis of the magnetic susceptibility is a bulk phenomenon. The line width DeltaH(pp) of the broad EPR signal is independent of temperature and EPR frequency. This finding indicates that the line broadening results from the dipole-dipole interaction, and the spins responsible for the broad EPR peak has the average distance of approximately 1.0 nm. To explain these apparently puzzling properties, we examined a probable mechanism of electron localization in KB(6) and its implications.

New technologies in electron spin resonance

New electron spin resonance (ESR) technologies have been developed, which have led to new and improved applications. (a) The development of two-dimensional Fourier transform (FT) ESR required spectrometers providing intense pi/2 microwave pulses of very short (3-5 ns) duration, wide bandwidths, and very short dead times. It has enabled studies that resolve sophisticated details of molecular dynamics in complex fluids. (b) Methods that produce multiple quantum coherences by pulsed ESR now enable accurate measurements of large distances (>12A). (c) One of the most important advances has been the extension of ESR to high magnetic fields and high frequencies. This has benefited from the utilization of quasi-optical methods, especially above 150 GHz. The greatly improved orientational resolution and the faster "snapshot" of motions that are provided by ESR at high frequencies enhance studies of molecular dynamics. The use of both high and lower frequencies enables one to unravel faster and slower modes from the complex dynamics of fluids and macromolecules. (d) The development of FT-ESR imaging required substantial pulsed field gradients lasting only 50-100 ns. ESR imaging is effective in studying diffusion in fluids. Areas for further development are also described.
