Equilibrium Structure and Spectroscopic Constants of Difluorovinylidene: An ab Initio Study

Donor Stabilized Borylnitrene: A Highly Reactive BN Analogue of Vinylidene

A donor atom stabilized borylnitrene, 2-nitreno-1,3,2-benzodioxaborole 4c, is characterized by matrix isolation IR, UV, and ESR spectroscopy as well as multiconfiguration SCF and CI computations. UV irradiation (lambda = 254 nm) of the corresponding azide 6c, isolated in solid argon at 10 K, produces 4c in high yield. The oxygen donor atoms in 4c result in a triplet ground state (|D/hc| = 1.492 cm(-)(1), |E/hc| = 0.004 cm(-)(1)) for the borylnitrene. The lowest energy singlet state ((1)A(1)) is 33 kcal mol(-)(1) higher in energy and closely related to the ground state of vinylidene. Under the conditions of matrix isolation, triplet 4c is photochemically and thermally stable toward rearrangement to the corresponding cyclic iminoborane. Photochemical irradiation (lambda > 550 nm) of 4c rather causes an efficient reaction with molecular nitrogen, lying in matrix sites nearby, to give 6c. Similarly, photochemical, but not thermal, trapping of 4c with CO is possible and results in the corresponding isocycanate 9c. Thermal reaction of 4c with O(2) in doped argon matrixes at 35 K could be observed by IR spectroscopy to result in borylnitroso-O-oxide 17c as shown by (18)O(2) labeling experiments and DFT computations. The diradical 17c is very photolabile and quickly rearranges to the nitritoborane 16c upon irradiation.

Quasiclassical trajectory calculations on the photodissociation of CF2CHCl at 193 nm: product energy distributions for the HF and HCl eliminations

Quasiclassical trajectory calculations were carried out to determine product energy distributions for the HCl and HF eliminations that take place in the photodissociation of 2-chloro-1,1-difluoroethylene at 193 nm. The trajectories were initiated at the transition states of the HCl and HF elimination channels under microcanonical, quasiclassical conditions, and were propagated with the energies and gradients taken directly from density functional theory calculations. Good agreement with experiment is found, except for the translational energy distribution of the HF elimination channel and the average vibrational energy of the HCl fragment. Possible sources of disagreement are discussed.

The Singlet-Triplet Separation in CF2: State-of-the-Art Ab Initio Calculations and Franck-Condon Simulations Including Anharmonicity

Geometrical parameters, vibrational frequencies and relative electronic energies of the X2B1 state of CF2- and the X1A1 and ã3B1 states of CF2 have been calculated. Core-electron effects on the computed minimum-energy geometries and relative electronic energies have been investigated, and relativistic contributions to the computed relative electronic energies calculated. Potential energy functions of the X2B1 state of CF2- and the X1A1 and ã3B1 states of CF2 have been determined, and anharmonic vibrational wavefunctions of these states calculated variationally. Franck-Condon factors including anharmonicity and Duschinsky rotation have been computed and used to simulate the ã-X emission spectrum of CF2 determined by S. Koda [Chem. Phys. Lett. 1978, 55, 353] and the 364 nm laser photodetachment spectrum of CF2- obtained by R. L. Schwartz et al. [J. Phys. Chem. A 1999, 103, 8213]. Comparison between theory and experiment shows that the theoretical approach benchmarked in the present study is able to give highly reliable positions for the CF2(X1A1) + e <-- CF2-(X2B1) and CF2(ã3B1) + e <-- CF2-(X2B1) bands in the photoelectron spectrum of CF2- and a reliable singlet-triplet gap for CF2. It is therefore concluded that the same theoretical approach should give reliable simulated CCl2(X1A1) + e <-- CCl2-(X2B1) and CCl2(ã3B1) + e <-- CCl2-(X2B1) bands in the photodetachment spectrum of CCl2- and a reliable singlet-triplet gap for CCl2.
