Control of Saltwater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

Simulating the effects of model parameters on stagnation points position during seawater intrusion

Several works have been performed in order to understand seawater intrusion by simulating the Henry problem. Investigations were implemented by simulating the effect of many parameters (fractured aquifer, dispersion and diffusion, geochemical reactions, heterogeneity, anisotropy, boundary conditions) on the flow and transport. This paper focus on the concept of the "stagnation point," and this concept plays an important role in modeling, management and characterization of coastal aquifer. A total of forty-eight simulations, including the base case, were made to explore the effect of molecular diffusion coefficient, dispersivity, and seawater density on the position of the stagnation point. It was found that the increase of the molecular diffusion coefficient or the dispersivity leads to a downward displacement of the stagnation to the aquifer bottom and the lowest point position is reached for a Pe value of 0.35. For the seawater density effect, numerical results predict a nonlinear behavior of the stagnation point position, where the downward displacement is detected only for a ρ_s ranging from 1025 to 1045 kg/m³.

Assessing the Impact of Groundwater Extraction on the Performance of Fractured Concrete Subsurface Dam in Controlling Seawater Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers

Among the well-known approaches for controlling seawater intrusion during extensive freshwater abstraction from coastal aquifers is the construction of subsurface dams. In the current research, the SEAWAT code is being implemented to examine the impact of groundwater extraction on the effectiveness of a damaged subsurface dam for controlling saltwater intrusion. Simulations were performed numerically to check impact of the subsurface dam height, dam location, well height, well location, abstraction rate, fracture aperture, fracture location, seawater density and fracture dimension on the effectiveness of subsurface dam as a countermeasure to prevent saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. Increasing the abstraction rate from 1 × 10−6 to 5 × 10−6 m3/s caused the seawater to advance more into the freshwater, and the loss of effectiveness increased. The minimum and maximum value of loss of subsurface dam effectiveness was recorded to be 34.6% to 93%, respectively, for the abstraction rates from the well equal 1 × 10−6 and 5 × 10−6 m3/s, consequentially. When the dimensionless value of well height location Lw/Ld is increased from 1.0 to 2.0, the effectiveness of the subsurface dam is reduced by around 20%. The findings demonstrate that the well location, well depth, abstraction rate, location of the dam, fracture aperture, and density of saltwater all affect the effectiveness impairment of the fractured subsurface dam for controlling saltwater intrusion. Decision makers could use findings of this research to better manage groundwater resources in coastal aquifers.

A new technique of seawater intrusion control: development of geochemical cutoff wall

The construction of a subsurface dam and/or physical cutoff barriers is one of the most known techniques used to prevent seawater intrusion during excessive exploitation of freshwater from a coastal aquifer. This method is widely used in many sites around the world (Japan, Brazil, India, Burkina Faso…). In this study, we present an innovative technique for constructing subsurface barriers based on geochemical reactions. A calcite cutoff wall is developed by mixing two aqueous solutions Na₂CO₃ and CaCl₂ under pCO₂ equal to 3.16·10^-4 bar. The deposition of calcite in the mixing zone induces a high clogging, which greatly reduces the porosity and then the permeability of the aquifer into the injection zone. We use GEODENS code to study the effect of a developed geochemical cutoff wall on saltwater intrusion and to assess their protective effect on preventing seawater intrusion. The GEODENS code can solve these equations by a finite element procedure; it can handle density-dependent flow, transport, and geochemical reactions in porous media. The effect of depth and location of the geochemical cutoff wall is tested and results showed a significant reduction of seawater intrusion penetration length. According to the budget used in many barrier construction projects, we have shown that the developed geochemical cutoff wall presented in this work could produce a lower seawater intrusion penetration length than the traditionally used barriers at a very lower cost.

Integrated Modelling for Groundwater Contamination from Polluted Streams Using New Protection Process Techniques

Evaluating water quality indicators is a crucial issue in integrated water resource management, since potable water is an essential resource for the world's health and sustainable development. The current study was developed using a coupled model of MODFLOW and MT3DMS (Mass Transport 3-Dimension Multi-Species) to integrate two water supply systems, surface water (polluted drains and canals) and ground water, to identify the contamination process of the groundwater from drains as fresh water is polluted and the contamination level exceeds the standard limits. The study was applied to two cases: the first was a hypothetical simulation and the second was the real case of the Nile Delta Aquifer (NDA). Four different scenarios were simulated to first identify groundwater contamination by total dissolved solids (TDS), and then select the more efficient protection process. The first scenario involved changing polluted drain and canal boundary conditions regarding head and concentration; the second consisted of studying the location of the polluted drain in a low permeability layer or a confined aquifer; the third was based on installing a cut-off wall in the polluted drain sides; and the fourth investigated the use of lining materials for polluted drains. The results reveal that aquifer contamination was decreased by increasing the water head of canals by 50 cm and decreasing the drain head by 50 cm and concentration by 25%, whereby large quantities of groundwater were protected. The percentages of salt repulsion in the hypothetical case were +10.66, +12.89, and +24.99%, while in NDA they were +6.29, +8.71, and +25% respectively compared with the base case. Decreasing the aquifer hydraulic conductivity led to decrease in aquifer contamination, in which the confined aquifer pollution was less than the unconfined aquifers due to the clay cap, which plays a significant role in minimizing the solute transport into the groundwater reservoir, and to reduction of the aquifer salt variation by +19.01% for the hypothetical case. The results indicate that the cut-off wall is effective for contamination management in shallow aquifers (hypothetical case) and the reduction in aquifer salt was +28.49%, whereas it had no effect in the deep aquifer (NDA), where the salt was reduced by just +0.34%. Using the drain lining scenario prevented contamination from the polluted drains and protected the freshwater in the aquifer, so that the aquifer salt mass reductions were +91.02 and +70.13% for the hypothetical case and NDA respectively, indicating that this method is more effective for controlling groundwater contamination. Polluted drains should be located in a low permeability layer to minimize the water degradation. This study represents a new contribution to groundwater protection techniques by changing the boundary conditions, installing a cut-off wall and using linings for polluted drains, and shows the way forward for the future treatment of polluted stream networks.
