Abstract
Water is a vital substance that constitutes biological structures and sustains life. However, water pollution is currently among the major environmental challenges and has attracted increasing study attention. How to handle contaminated water now mainly focuses on removing or reducing the pollutants from the wastewater. Cyclodextrin derivatives, possessing external hydrophilic and internal hydrophobic properties, have been recognized as new-generation adsorbents to exert positive effects on water pollution treatment. This article outlines recent contributions of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents on wastewater treatment, highlighting different adsorption mechanisms of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents under different influencing factors. The crosslinked and immobilized cyclodextrin-based adsorbents all displayed outstanding adsorption capacities. Particularly, according to specific pollutants including metal ions, organic chemicals, pesticides, and drugs in wastewater, this article has classified and organized various cyclodextrin-based adsorbents into tables, which could pave an intuitive shortcut for designing and developing efficient cyclodextrin-based adsorbents for targeted wastewater pollutants. Besides, this article specially discusses cost-effectiveness and regeneration performance of current cyclodextrin-based adsorbents. Finally, the challenges and future directions of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents are prospected in this article, which may shed substantial light on practical industrial applications of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents.

Abstract
The interaction of a painkiller Isoxicam, belonging to the oxicam group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and its copper complex with different cyclodextrins (β-CD, γ-CD, HPβCD, and HPγCD), has been investigated in both solution and the solid state. Steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence anisotropy, 1H NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy are used. Both the drug and its copper complex form a host-guest inclusion complex with all CDs. Fluorescence spectroscopy is used to determine binding constants and stoichiometries of the host-guest complex. The strongest binding is seen for γ-CD. 1H NMR study showed that Isoxicam penetrates into the CD cavity from the more accessible wider side. For β- and γ-CD, Isoxicam showed one type of binding, i.e., formation of an inclusion complex, whereas, for HPβCD and HPγCD, it showed two types of binding, i.e., inclusion in the CD cavities and interaction with the outer surface of the CD molecules mainly near the hydroxy propyl group. Deeper penetration occurred into the larger diameter cavity of γ-CD and HPγCD compared to β-CD and HPβCD. From FTIR and 1H NMR study, it is seen that predominantly the π-electron-rich benzene part of the drug and its complex penetrate into the host cavity.

Abstract
From a mixture of N-acetylglucosaminyl-beta-cyclodextrin (GlcNAc-betaCD) and lactose, beta-D-galactosyl-GlcNAc-betaCD (Gal-GlcNAc-betaCD) was synthesized by the transfer action of beta-galactosidase. GlcNAc-maltotriose (Glc3) and Gal-GlcNAc-Glc3 were produced with hydrolysis of GlcNAc-betaCD by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, and Gal-GlcNAc-betaCD by bacterial saccharifying alpha-amylase respectively. Finally, GlcNAc-Glc3-betaCD and Gal-GlcNAc-Glc3-betaCD were synthesized in 5.2% and 3.5% yield when Klebsiella pneumoniae pullulanase was incubated with the mixture of GlcNAc-Glc(3) and betaCD, or Gal-GlcNAc-Glc3 and betaCD respectively. The structures of GlcNAc-Glc3-betaCD and Gal-GlcNAc-Glc3-betaCD were analyzed by FAB-MS and NMR spectroscopy and identified as 6-O-alpha-(6(3)-O-beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminyl-maltotriosyl)-betaCD, and 6-O-alpha-(4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-6(3)-O-beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminyl-maltotriosyl)-betaCD respectively.

Abstract
Trans-resveratrol, a polyphenol extracted from Vitis vinifera, has different beneficial effects following its administration on the skin. Here the potential use of binary systems to enhance in vitro and in vivo activity of trans-resveratrol was investigated. Thus the aqueous solubility of trans-resveratrol was investigated in the presence of growing concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or β-cyclodextrin (βCD) as solubilizing excipients. Then, the solid dispersion of trans-resveratrol with PEG or inclusion complexes trans-resveratrol/βCD were prepared and characterised by different methods. Cytotoxicity and inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) following H2O2 challenge in the presence of trans-resveratrol, alone or associated to the excipients, was evaluated on human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line. Both the trans-resveratrol-containing binary systems induced significant reduction of H2O2-induced ROS production, especially in the case of βCD that was selected for the following phase of the study. Thus, the effect of a cream containing trans-resveratrol, alone or associated to βCD, on different skin parameters such as corneometry, colorimetry and elastometry, was evaluated on human volunteers. All patients showed a visible improvement of clinical conditions with a remarkable decrease of aging signs, but this effect was higher of the hemi face treated with the βCD-containing formulation versus formulation containing trans-resveratrol alone.

Abstract
Further refinement of the model using maximum likelihood procedures and reevaluation of the native electron density map has shown that crystals of pig pancreatic alpha-amylase, whose structure we reported more than 15 years ago, in fact contain a substantial amount of carbohydrate. The carbohydrate fragments are the products of glycogen digestion carried out as an essential step of the protein's purification procedure. In particular, the substrate-binding cleft contains a limit dextrin of six glucose residues, one of which contains both alpha-(1,4) and alpha-(1,6) linkages to contiguous residues. The disaccharide in the original model, shared between two amylase molecules in the crystal lattice, but also occupying a portion of the substrate-binding cleft, is now seen to be a tetrasaccharide. There are, in addition, several other probable monosaccharide binding sites. Furthermore, we have further reviewed our X-ray diffraction analysis of alpha-amylase complexed with alpha-cyclodextrin. alpha-Amylase binds three cyclodextrin molecules. Glucose residues of two of the rings superimpose upon the limit dextrin and the tetrasaccharide. The limit dextrin superimposes in large part upon linear oligosaccharide inhibitors visualized by other investigators. By comprehensive integration of these complexes we have constructed a model for the binding of polysaccharides having the helical character known to be present in natural substrates such as starch and glycogen.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) is an important industrial enzyme which is used to produce cyclodextrins. CGTase genes from more than 30 bacteria have been isolated and several of the enzymes have been identified and biochemically characterized. For a better understanding of the reaction mechanism and function of CGTase, the enzyme has been analyzed at gene level and protein level with regard to its structure and the similarity of different CGTase subgroups. The biological role of the enzyme is proposed based on the genetic and enzymatic analyses. Methods to enhance the production of active CGTase by bacteria are compared. The enzyme can be applied in biotechnology for the production of cyclodextrins and oligosaccharides with novel properties.

Abstract
The aim of this work was study the effect of the chlorhexidine : hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CLX : HP-beta-CD) inclusion compound (IC) on in vitro slabs of bovine dentine. The substantivity, antimicrobial activity, and morphological effect of this inclusion compound were evaluated. Cyclodextrin improves the physical-chemical and pharmacological properties of drugs. Fragments of bovine dentine were immersed into either IC serial solutions at 0.24%, 0.12%, 0.06%, 0.03%, 0.015%, and 0.008% or controls water and free chlorhexidine. The desorption kinetics showed that CLX : HP-beta-CD compound release CLX for 6 days in a rate flow near to zero-order profile in comparison to plain CLX. Antimicrobial activity tests showed that CLX : HP-beta-CD inhibited A. actinomycetemcomitans and S. mutans significantly. The morphological effect studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that CLX : HP-beta-CD did not cause morphological changes to the slab's surface. It is concluded that the chlorhexidine : hydroxypropyl-beta-CD inclusion compound creates an effective controlled release system with biological activity and that it may act as a good prevention and control agent of caries and periodontal disease in vivo.

Abstract
A novel cyclodextrin derivative, i.e., permethylated-alpha-cyclodextrin (PM-alpha-CD), was used for removing glycerolipids from spinach thylakoid membranes and investigating their role in photosynthetic activities. A three-step selective removal of each lipid class was observed in treated membranes. Up to a concentration of 4 mM, PM-alpha-CD (in the presence of 75 microg chlorophyll a+b/mL), PM-alpha-CD displayed a marked selectivity for anionic lipids [sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol (SQDG) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG)] in comparison with galactolipids. At this concentration, half of PG and SQDG were removed. Within this range of concentration, the volume response of treated thylakoids to variation of osmolarity, an indirect mean of verifying the structural integrity of the membrane, was not altered. Similarly, neither photosystem II (PSII) nor photosystem I (PSI) activity was affected. In contrast, the low-temperature fluorescence ratio F695/F740 drastically diminished from 1.45 to about 0.7, essentially due to the decrease of PSII fluorescence. The results derived from the fast fluorescence rise expressed in the form of a spider suggest that the fraction of inactivated (non-Q(A) reducing) reaction centers (RC) increases while the active (Q(A) reducing) RC remained intact. Raising the concentration of PM-alpha-CD from 4 to 7 mM resulted in a progressive but greater diminution of the galactolipid level than that of SQDG and PG. Within this concentration range, the integrity of the membrane was not altered, nor was either PSII or PSI activity, whereas the F695/F740 ratio decreased to about 0.45 as well as the fraction of inactivated RC. At concentrations above 7 mM of PM-alpha-CD, the integrity of the membrane was impaired, resulting in a decrease of both electron transport activities. At all concentrations, PM-alpha-CD did not show any selectivity toward either the acyl chains of the lipid molecules or the molecular species of PG. The results are discussed in terms of the role of glycerolipids in thylakoid membrane function and the relationship of the chemical structure of PM-alpha-CD and its lipid removal capacity.

Abstract
Tolbutamide (TBM) was found to form an inclusion complex with beta cyclodextrin (beta-CD) in solution and in solid state. Inclusion complex formation between tolbutamide and beta-cyclodextrin in aqueous solution was studied by phase solubility and spectral shift methods. The apparent stability constant Ks calculated by these techniques, in water, were estimated as 195.7 and 236.5 M(-1), respectively. The phase solubility studies revealed a B(S)-type diagram with an inclusion complex of 1:2 molar ratio. The solid inclusion complexes of TBM and beta-CD were prepared at a molar ratio of 1:2 by kneading, coprecipitation, freeze-drying, and spray-drying methods. In addition, the physical mixture was prepared. Characterization of TBM: beta-CD inclusion was performed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry and by application of a so-called ether wash method. All the inclusion systems investigated led to a significant improvement in the dissolution over free TBM, and the dissolution rate of the active material was observed to be independent of the preparation method.

Abstract
Inclusion of cyclodextrins into an agar gel enabled a homogeneous incorporation of water-immiscible lipophilic organic liquids and solids as substrates for surface microbial growth or conversion. Surface cultivation of Candida lipolytica and C. tropicalis was demonstrated in alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin/hexadecane-agar media.
