Synchronous growth of triple lung cancer

Combined carcinoid tumor and squamous cell carcinoma of lung: expanding the spectrum of combined tumors of lung

Combined lung cancers containing both small cell and non-small cell carcinoma elements are uncommon but well recognized. Lung tumors with neuroendocrine differentiation form a group of histologically distinct tumors with differing clinical behavior ranging from low-grade tumors with good prognosis (typical carcinoid) to intermediate-grade tumors (atypical carcinoid) to high-grade tumors with poor prognosis (small cell carcinoma and large cell neuroendocrine tumors). The authors report clinical findings and pathologic findings in a case of combined carcinoid tumor and squamous cell carcinoma of lung. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of such a case in the peer reviewed literature, thus broadening the spectrum of combined lung tumors.

Three different synchronous primary lung tumours: A case report with extensive genetic analysis and review of the literature

Synchronous triple lung tumours are rare and little is known as for their genetic basis. Here we report a case of a 59 years old male with three synchronous independent and histological different primary tumours of the left lung. Two nodules were located in the upper lobe and consisted of an adenocarcinoma (ADC) and an endobronchial poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A third nodule of the lower lobe corresponded to a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCLC). To assess if they represented independent primary tumours and have common genetic profiles, tumours were investigated for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at 40 chromosomal markers. A comparable fractional allelic loss of 0.52 was observed in the ADC and SCLC, while it was 0.28 in the SCC. Microallelotyping analysis did not reveal a common genetic profile, supporting the hypothesis that the three synchronous tumours are truly independent primaries with different histogenesis.

Extended sleeve pulmonary resection in a patient with synchronous triple bronchogenic squamous cell carcinoma

A 58-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of bloody sputum. He was diagnosed as having synchronous triple bronchogenic squamous cell carcinomas in the right upper lobe, from the right B(6) segmental bronchus to the intermediate trunk and the middle lobar bronchus, and in the spur of the left B(1+2)/B(3) segmental bronchus. He underwent sleeve resection of the right upper lobe, right middle lobe, and right S(6) segment, with an anastomosis between the right main and right basal bronchi. This was followed by YAG-laser treatment and external irradiation for the left tumour and the residual right tumour. Postoperatively, chest X-ray revealed adequate expansion of the right basal segment, and pulmonary function testing showed satisfactory results. Recurrence was not detected during an initial 6-month period, however careful follow-up is required.
