Comparison of digital subtraction arteriography and conventional film screen subtraction arteriography for neuroradiology

History of surgery for cerebrovascular disease in children. Part I. Intracranial arterial aneurysms

✓ Intracranial aneurysms are rare in children, and their origins and treatment methods tend to be different from those in these same entities in adults. These lesions tend to be congenital or to have an infectious or traumatic origin. In the current paper the authors trace the historical evolution of the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial aneurysms in children. Based on the literature, these lesions appear to occur in children in less than 3% of all series. The literature also supports the suggestion that symptoms from these aneurysms are often from mass effect and that giant aneurysms and lesions in the posterior cranial fossa are relatively more common in children than in adults. The termination of the carotid artery and the anterior cerebral artery seem to be disproportionately common sites of aneurysm formation in this cohort. Interestingly, surgical outcomes in children appear to be moderately better than in adults. Based on the literature, the claim can be made that a multidisciplinary approach to the management of such aneurysms can yield good outcomes in a very high percentage of children treated.

Neuroradiological applications of a new system of stereoscopic biplane digital subtraction angiography

A stereoscopic biplane digital subtraction angiography (DSA) system was developed, capable of obtaining frontal and lateral projections simultaneously during a single injection of contrast medium. This new system combines the advantages of both biplane and stereoscopic single-plane DSA, and permits high-quality neuroangiography.

Facial vascular malformations in children. Conventional and digital, diagnostic and therapeutic angiography

The authors present their experience with conventional and digital angiography of vascular malformations of the head and neck in children. 22 hemangioendotheliomas, 8 venous angiomas, and 3 arteriovenous fistula were studied. 22 patients were embolised. DSA offers many advantages during the diagnostic as well during the therapeutic phase of angiography. Embolization appears to have a major role in treatment of such vascular malformations.

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA): a neurosurgical perspective

The purpose of this article is to review the contribution of DSA to neurosurgical practice and to outline its advantages and limitations compared to conventional film-screen angiography. DSA is a technique whereby electronic subtraction allows the near instantaneous demonstration of vascular anatomy essentially free of bony detail. Because DSA possesses a high degree of contrast sensitivity, arterial images can be produced after an intravenous injection of contrast medium as well as by selective arterial catheterisation.
