Residues of detergent-derived organic pollutants and polychlorinated biphenyls in sludge-amended soil

Field dissipation of 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol, triclosan and bisphenol A following land application of biosolids

The persistence of contaminants entering the environment through land application of biosolids needs to be understood to assess the potential risks associated. This study used two biosolids treatments to examine the dissipation of four organic compounds: 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol, bisphenol A and triclosan, under field conditions in South Australia. The pattern of dissipation was assessed to determine if a first-order or a biphasic model better described the data. The field dissipation data was compared to previously obtained laboratory degradation data. The concentrations of 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol and bisphenol A decreased during the field study, whereas the concentration of triclosan showed no marked decrease. The time taken for 50% of the initial concentration of the compounds in the two biosolids to dissipate (DT50), based on a first-order model, was 257 and 248 d for 4-nonylphenol, 231 and 75 d for 4-t-octylphenol and 289 and 43 d for bisphenol A. These field DT50 values were 10- to 20-times longer for 4-nonylphenol and 4-t-octylphenol and 2.5-times longer for bisphenol A than DT50 values determined in the laboratory. A DT50 value could not be determined for triclosan as this compound showed no marked decrease in concentration. The biphasic model provided a significantly improved fit to the 4-t-octylphenol data in both biosolids treatments, however, for 4-nonylphenol and bisphenol A it only improved the fit for one treatment. This study shows that the use of laboratory experiments to predict field persistence of compounds in biosolids amended soils may greatly overestimate degradation rates and inaccurately predict patterns of dissipation.

Degradation of 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol, bisphenol A and triclosan following biosolids addition to soil under laboratory conditions

Land application of biosolids is common practice in many countries, however, there are some potential risks associated with the presence of contaminants within the biosolids. This laboratory study examined the degradation of four commonly found organic compounds, 4-nonylphenol, 4-t-octylphenol, bisphenol A, and triclosan, in soil following the addition of two biosolids over 32 weeks. The pattern of degradation was assessed to determine if it followed a standard first-order decay model or if a biphasic model with a degrading and a recalcitrant fraction better described the data. The time taken for the initial concentrations to decrease by 50% (DT50), based on a first-order model, was 12-25 d for 4-nonylphenol, 10-14 d for 4-t-octylphenol, 18-102 d for bisphenol A, and 73-301 d for triclosan. For 4-nonylphenol, bisphenol A and triclosan, the biphasic model fitted the degradation data better than the first-order model, indicating the presence of a degrading fraction and a non-degrading recalcitrant fraction. The recalcitrant fraction for these three compounds at the completion of the 32 week experiment was 17-21%, 24-42%, and 30-51% of the initial concentrations, respectively. For 4-t-octylphenol, the first-order model was sufficient in explaining the degradation data, indicating that no recalcitrant fraction was present. This study showed that biphasic degradation occurred for some organic compounds in biosolids amended soil and that the use of standard first-order degradation models may underestimate the persistence of some organic compounds following land application of biosolids.

Fate of a branched nonylphenol isomer in submerged paddy soils amended with nitrate

Using a (14)C-labelled branched isomer of NP, the fate of NP was studied in two flooded typical paddy soils under anoxic conditions. Biodegradation of NP occurred under anoxic conditions and was accompanied by the production of polar metabolites and bound residues in alkaline soil extract and humin. The addition of nitrate (20mM) increased the degradation of NP in both soils, especially in soil derived from silt loam deposit, which contained high amounts of organic matter. Less than 1% NP mineralization was detected as free CO(2) in both soils, whereas up to 30, 21, 31% of NP residues comprised at least two polar metabolites, those extractable from humic substances and from the humin fraction, respectively. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of DNA extract of the soil microorganisms hinted differences of microbial community between soils with different degradation rates of NP. The present study provides for the first time information about the fate of a branched nonylphenol isomer in submerged soils amended with nitrate. The production of high amounts of polar metabolites under anoxic conditions suggests the necessity of also considering the fate and possible effects of the degradation products of NP in anoxic environment such as in waterlogged soil.

Degradation and plant uptake of nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol-12-ethoxylate (NP12EO) in four contrasting agricultural soils

Nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs) are surfactants found ubiquitously in the environment due to widespread industrial and domestic use. Biodegradation of NPEOs produces nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine disruptor. Sewage sludge application introduces NPEOs and NP into soils, potentially leading to accumulation in soils and crops. We examined degradation of NP and nonylphenol-12-ethoxylate (NP12EO) in four soils. NP12EO degraded rapidly (initial half time 0.3-5 days). Concentrations became undetectable within 70-90 days, with a small increase in NP concentrations after 30 days. NP initially degraded quickly (mean half time 11.5 days), but in three soils a recalcitrant fraction of 26-35% remained: the non-degrading fraction may consist of branched isomers, resistant to biodegradation. Uptake of NP by bean plants was also examined. Mean bioconcentration factors for shoots and seeds were 0.71 and 0.58, respectively. Removal of NP from the soil by plant uptake was negligible (0.01-0.02% of initial NP). Root concentrations were substantially higher than shoot and seed concentrations.

The production, use and quality of sewage sludge in Denmark

In Denmark, the production of municipal sewage sludge decreased from approximately 170,000 ton d.m. in 1994 to 140,000 ton d.m. in 2002. The sludge is handled and treated in a number of ways. The quality of Danish sludge has steadily improved since the middle of the 1980s, when the first set of quality criteria for heavy metals was introduced. In 1997, cut-off criteria for the organic pollutants, LAS, DEHP, nonylphenol and PAHs were introduced. Effective control from authorities, voluntary phasing out agreements with industry, improved source identification tools, better handling and after-care methods have in combination with higher waste duties led to a significant reduction in the sludge level of especially cadmium, mercury, chromium, LAS and nonylphenol. The increased quality demand has, nevertheless, also led to a minor reduction in the use of sewage sludge as organic fertiliser on agricultural land.

The environmental fate of the primary degradation products of alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactants in recycled paper sludge

Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) are a group of non-ionic surfactants that are degraded microbially into more lipophilic degradation products with estrogenic potential, including nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO), octylphenol (4-tOP) and nonylphenol (4-NP). Nonylphenol ethoxylates are used in paper recycling plants for de-inking paper and have the potential to be released into the environment through spreading of wastewater treatment sludge for soil amendment. Three samples of recycled paper sludge were collected from farmers' fields and analyzed for concentrations of NP1EO, NP2EO, 4-NP and 4-tOP. Each sample differed in the amount of time elapsed since the sludge was placed on farmers' fields. Primary degradation products of APEOs were present at low micrograms/g concentrations in the sludge samples. Differences in the concentrations of these analytes in sludge samples indicated that APEO concentrations declined by 84% over a period of 14 weeks on farmers' fields. Changes in the chromatographic patterns of acetylated 4-NP indicated that there is a group of recalcitrant nonylphenol isomers that degrades more slowly than other isomers. These data indicate that microbial degradation may reduce the risk of environmental contamination by these compounds, but more work is required to assess the toxic potential of APEOs in sludges used for soil amendment.
