Influences of fruit volatiles and coloration on oviposition of the cherry fruit fly

Olfactory Responses of Anastrepha obliqua (Diptera: Tephritidae) to Mango Fruits as Influenced by Cultivar and Ripeness Stages

Anastrepha obliqua Macquart (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a polyphagous species with hog plums (Spondias spp.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) and mangoes (Mangifera indica L.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae) as primary host fruits. In this study, the olfactory preference of A. obliqua for three stages of ripeness of two mango cultivars ('Coche' and 'Ataulfo') was investigated. The female flies were more attracted to ripe 'Coche' fruits compared to those ripe 'Ataulfo'. Further, they were more attracted to the 'Coche' half-ripe and ripe fruits than to the unripe ones, but they did not discriminate among the stages of ripeness of 'Ataulfo' fruits. The male flies did not show preference for any specific mango cultivars or ripeness stage tested. Four compounds from ripe 'Coche' mangoes, and two from ripe 'Ataulfo' fruits were identified using coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic (GC-EAD) recording and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. 'Coche' mango volatiles eliciting responses from the female antennae were ethyl butyrate, ethyl hexanoate, ethyl heptanoate, and ethyl octanoate. The two 'Ataulfo' mango volatiles were identified as 3-carene and ethyl octanoate. These compounds were absent in unripe mangoes of both cultivars. Synthetic blends of these compounds were attractive to females as mango extracts in field cage tests. Our results suggest that the olfactory preference of A. obliqua for attractive hosts is based on the presence or absence of the compounds associated with fruit maturity.

Temperature Effects on Oviposition by Rhagoletis indifferens (Diptera: Tephritidae) Vary in Different Developmental Stages of Sweet Cherry

Fruit developmental stage affects oviposition responses by tephritid fruit flies, but the role temperature plays in these responses to different fruit stages remains largely unknown. Here, temperature effects on oviposition rates of western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran, in different stages of Bing sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) were determined in no-choice experiments. Stage 1 (green), stage 2 (green-yellow to orange red), stage 3 (yellow-orange to red), and stage 4 cherries (red to burgundy) were exposed to flies at 15.6, 21.1, 26.7, and 32.2°C for 3 h and oviposition recorded. Oviposition was lower at 15.6°C than at all other test temperatures within all four cherry stages. Regression analysis using the three higher temperatures indicated there were significant cherry stage and temperature effects and a significant cherry stage × temperature interaction. The oviposition-temperature relationship was best explained by linear or curvilinear equations, depending on cherry stage. Oviposition in stage 1 cherries was lowest of the four stages and was not or linearly related to temperature. Oviposition in stage 2 cherries was greater and was related to temperature in a linear or curvilinear response. Oviposition was greatest in stage 3 and 4 cherries, with curvilinear and linear equations, respectively, best explaining oviposition-temperature relationships. Results suggest that temperatures and cherry stage together rather than cherry stage alone may have selected for behaviors leading to oviposition responses in R. indifferens.

Rhagoletis cerasi: Oviposition Reduction Effects of Oil Products

The European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a highly destructive pest. Methods to control it are limited and alternatives are needed. Observations of cherry fruit flies suggest that females exert much effort to penetrate cherries at color change stage (from green to yellow) for oviposition. Therefore, the question arose as to whether a physical barrier on the fruit surface could reduce oviposition. The effects of different commercial horticultural oil products on R. cerasi oviposition were evaluated in a series of laboratory, semi-field and field experiments. In the laboratory experiments, the rate of successful oviposition on fruits treated with 0.25% v/v of the rapeseed oil product Telmion was significantly reduced by 90% compared to the untreated control. In semi-field experiments, deposits of 1% of rapeseed, mineral and paraffinic oil significantly reduced oviposition for up to 3 days. Semi-field experiments indicated that the oil products lose efficacy within 3 to 6 days after application due to degradation. Although treatments with the rapeseed oil product Telmion reduced infestation rates in an on-farm field experiment, the infested fruit clearly exceeded the level of market tolerance of 2%. Further research is needed to assess whether combinations of oil products, higher application rates and different formulations might improve field efficacy.
