Geographical distribution of organochlorine contaminants and reproductive parameters in Herring Gulls on Lake Superior in 1983

Deriving Field-Based Ecological Risks for Bird Species

Ecological risks (ERs) of pollutants are typically assessed using species sensitivity distributions (SSDs), based on effect concentrations obtained from bioassays with unknown representativeness for field conditions. Alternatively, monitoring data relating breeding success in bird populations to egg concentrations may be used. In this study, we developed a procedure to derive SSDs for birds based on field data of egg concentrations and reproductive success. As an example, we derived field-based SSDs for p, p'-DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exposure to birds. These SSDs were used to calculate ERs for these two chemicals in the American Great Lakes and the Arctic. First, we obtained field data of p, p'-DDE and PCBs egg concentrations and reproductive success from the literature. Second, these field data were used to fit exposure-response curves along the upper boundary (right margin) of the response's distribution (95th quantile), also called quantile regression analysis. The upper boundary is used to account for heterogeneity in reproductive success induced by other external factors. Third, the species-specific EC_10/50s obtained from the field-based exposure-response curves were used to derive SSDs per chemical. Finally, the SSDs were combined with specific exposure data for both compounds in the two areas to calculate the ER. We found that the ERs of combined exposure to these two chemicals were a factor of 5-35 higher in the Great Lakes compared to Arctic regions. Uncertainty in the species-specific exposure-response curves and related SSDs was mainly caused by the limited number of field exposure-response data for bird species. With sufficient monitoring data, our method can be used to quantify field-based ecological risks for other chemicals, species groups, and regions of interest.

Spatial patterns and rankings of contaminant concentrations in Herring Gull eggs from 15 sites in the Great Lakes and connecting channels, 1998-2002

Mean values of eight contaminants in Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) eggs were calculated for 15 Great Lakes sites for the 5 year period 1998-2002. The sites were ranked according to the concentrations of each of seven compounds relative to fish flesh criteria for the protection of piscivorous wildlife, and a single overall rank of contamination was calculated for each site. Based on this weighted ranking scheme, we found that sum PCBs, dioxin and DDE contributed the most (60.2, 30.5% and 8.5%, respectively) to the overall rankings. The weighted ranking scheme showed that eggs from Channel-Shelter Island (Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron), Strachan Island (St. Lawrence River) and Gull Island (northern Lake Michigan) ranked as the three most contaminated sites, while Agawa Rocks (eastern Lake Superior), Chantry Island (southern Lake Huron) and Port Colborne (eastern Lake Erie) ranked as the three least contaminated sites. Two of the three most contaminated sites are Areas of Concern; none of the three least contaminated sites are Areas of Concern.

Plasma Amino Acid Concentrations as an Indicator of Protein Availability to Breeding Herring Gulls (Larus Argentatus)

In a captive-feeding study using Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus), plasma amino-acid concentrations increased in response to an increase in dietary protein. Plasma amino-acid concentrations were also measured in wild Herring Gulls captured during incubation at eight Laurentian Great Lakes colonies. Those concentrations were used as an indicator of protein availability at those locations. Significant differences in amino acid concentrations were observed among colonies. Lower amino acid levels, particularly of the essential amino acids, were measured in gulls nesting on Lake Superior, whereas values in gulls captured on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie were greater. Those geographic differences in protein availability likely reflected spatial differences in availability of high quality prey (e.g. fish). Geographic differences in prey availability probably affected diet composition. Comparison of amino-acid levels in wild birds to reference values obtained through the captive feeding study indicated that gulls nesting on Lake Superior may have been protein limited. Colony-wide estimates of adult female body condition, intraclutch variation in egg size, and productivity were correlated with an index of plasma amino-acid concentrations.
