Interaction of sodium and potassium ions with?-carrageenan

Synthesis and comparative assessment of antiradical activity, toxicity, and biodistribution of κ-carrageenan-capped selenium nanoparticles of different size: in vivo and in vitro study

In the present study, water-soluble hybrid selenium-containing nanocomposites have been synthesised via soft oxidation of selenide-anions, preliminarily generated from elemental bulk-selenium in the base-reduction system 'N₂H₄-NaOH'. The nanocomposites obtained consist of Se⁰NPs (4.6-24.5 nm) stabilised by κ-carrageenan biocompatible polysaccharide. The structure of these composite nanomaterials has been proven using complementary physical-chemical methods: X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Optical ranges of 'emission/excitation' of aqueous solutions of nanocomposites with Se⁰NPs of different sizes are established and the most important parameters of their luminescence are determined. For the obtained nanocomposites, the expressed antiradical activity against free radicals 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid has been found, the value of which depends on the size of selenium nanoparticles. It is experimentally revealed that all obtained nanocomposites are low toxic (LD₅₀ >2000 mg/kg). It is also found that small selenium nanoparticles (6.8 nm), in contrast to larger nanoparticles (24.5 nm), are accumulated in organisms to significantly increase the level of selenium in the liver, kidneys, and brain (in lesser amounts) of rats.

Molecular dynamics simulations of two double-helical hexamer fragments of iota-carrageenan in aqueous solution

The gelation of anionic carrageenans is known to occur through a coil-to-helix transition followed by further aggregation or association on which positive counterions play a significant role. In the present work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on two double-helical iota-carrageenan hexamer fragments along with their sodium counterions using the Carbohydrate Solution Force Field (CSFF) in an aqueous (TIP4P) solution with the GROMACS molecular dynamics package. Results showed a counterion condensation between the two double helices and that the subsequent forces of interaction between them were predominantly attractive. By varying the distance separating the two double helices, the effect of distance on the counterion distribution and the forces of attraction was also investigated. In the presence of counterions, an increase in the forces of attraction was observed as the distance between the two double helices decreases which can be attributed to the greater counterion density between the two like-charged oligosaccharides.

Magnetic Hybrid Nanosorbents for the Uptake of Paraquat from Water

Although paraquat has been banned in European countries, this herbicide is still used all over the world, thanks to its low-cost, high-efficiency, and fast action. Because paraquat is highly toxic to humans and animals, there is interest in mitigating the consequences of its use, namely by implementing removal procedures capable of curbing its environmental and health risks. This research describes new magnetic nanosorbents composed of magnetite cores functionalized with bio-hybrid siliceous shells, that can be used to uptake paraquat from water using magnetically-assisted procedures. The biopolymers κ-carrageenan and starch were introduced into the siliceous shells, resulting in two hybrid materials, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/SiCRG and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/SiStarch, respectively, that exhibit a distinct surface chemistry. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/SiCRG biosorbents displayed a superior paraquat removal performance, with a good fitting to the Langmuir and Toth isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of paraquat for Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/SiCRG biosorbents was 257 mg·g-1, which places this sorbent among the best systems for the removal of this herbicide from water. The interesting performance of the κ-carrageenan hybrid, along with its magnetic properties and good regeneration capacity, presents a very efficient way for the remediation of water contaminated with paraquat.
