Identifying Relationships between Self-Report Measures of Personality and the Type a Behavior Pattern

Relationships between self-report measures of personality and the Type A behavior pattern (TABP) were examined in a sample of eighty-eight male and female adults. TABP categorization was based on the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS). Personality traits were measured by the Self-Monitoring Scale (SM), the Self-Deception Scale (SD), and the Impression Management Scale (IM). Predictions were that Type As would report lower scores than Type Bs on the SM and IM scales, but higher scores than Type Bs on the SD scale. Results indicated that independent of individual differences on other measures, age of subject, sex of subject, or social desirability responding that predictions were supported, with the exception that Type As reported lower scores than Type Bs on the SD scale. This suggests that self-report measures may be used to identify relationships between personality traits and TABP, and that Type As may be distinguished from Type Bs by trait tendencies toward low self-monitoring, low self-deception, and low impression management. This also suggests that distinctive Type A behavioral tendencies and coping strategies may be manifestations or consequences of specific trait tendencies.

A measurement model for the Type A Self-Rating Inventory

Compared to other questionnaire measures of Type A behavior, the Type A Self-Rating Inventory (TASRI) possesses particularly strong face validity. This study sought to develop a formal measurement model for the TASRI using a sample of 352 male and 479 female undergraduate psychology students. Assessed via structural equation modeling, an oblique two-factor (Hard-Driving, Extroverted) model explained over 90% of the common variance in responses to a subset of 13 of the original 28 TASRI items for men, women, and the pooled data. As hypothesized, relative to women, men had a greater mean score on the Hard-Driving factor and a lower mean score on the Extroverted factor. However, the magnitude of these gender differences is small. When reconceptualized in the context of work on the Big Five factor model, the Hard-Driving and Extroverted factors were found to reflect related elements of positive sociability and negative power, respectively.

Selection, training, and quality control of Type A interviewers in a prospective study of young adults

This paper describes Type A/B interviewer selection, training, and quality control results in a prospective study of coronary artery risk development in young adults (CARDIA). Interviewer behaviors from 152 CARDIA structured interviews were audited and compared with 747 Western Collaborative Group Study (WCGS) interviews and 577 Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT) interviews. The results show success in modeling the CARDIA interviewer behaviors on those of the WCGS. CARDIA interviews were very similar to WCGS interviews for interview length, number of questions asked, and speed of speaking; they were similar to MRFIT interviews in latency of asking questions. CARDIA interviewer behaviors remained fairly consistent over the four time periods. Comparing the clinics, there were regional differences in latency of asking and speed of speaking, with the Southern clinic having a longer asking latency and speaking more slowly. There were differences between individual interviewers in most characteristics, particularly those that were more free to vary. The study provides procedures and guidelines designed to maintain quality control of the structured interview process.

Stressful life events, Type A behavior, and the prediction of cardiovascular and total mortality over six years. MRFIT Group

The relationship between stressful life events and subsequent mortality and morbidity were determined prospectively over 6 years for 12,866 men participating in the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT). Aslo evaluated was the impact of life events on cardiovascular outcomes for persons exhibiting and not exhibiting coronary prone (Type A) behavior. Subjects completed life events checklists at baseline and each of five annual visits. Participants were also administered the Jenkins Activity Survey measure of Type A behavior at baseline and a subsample of 3110 participants was categorized as to behavior type based on the structured interview assessment method. Cox proportional hazard analyses indicated that number of life events experienced during each of 6 years of follow-up was unrelated to risk in the subsequent year of CHD death or fatal plus nonfatal MI and was inversely related to total mortality. The impact of life events on cardiovascular risk did not differ by behavior type category.

Measurement of the Type A behavior pattern in adolescents and young adults: cross-cultural development of AATAB

This paper reports psychometric development of a new scale, the AATAB, a 19-item questionnaire which attempts to measure the Type A behavior pattern in the adolescent and in the young adult. Initial studies were accomplished with Polish secondary-school students. Test-retest and internal consistency reliability estimates were very adequate, as was concurrent validity. Construct validity information is scant but in the desired direction. Factor analytical studies reveal only a single-factor structure on these adolescent subjects. The AATAB was given to university students of both sexes in Poland, Italy, and the United States. Students from all three countries scored at about the same level and concurrent validity was acceptable. Factor analysis of these data revealed meaningful factors for both sexes across all three cultures. While similar factors were found, the order of them was different by sex and by culture. These results are discussed and further reliability and validity research with the AATAB is outlined.

Speech characteristics and coronary heart disease incidence in the multiple risk factor intervention trial

To assess whether speech characteristics descriptive of Type A behavior were related to coronary heart disease (CHD) incidence in the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial, we scored voice emphasis, speed of speaking, latency of answering, and answer content from 577 audiotaped structured interviews in a case-control design which included all 193 individuals who incurred CHD during the 7-year follow-up. These were matched with 384 CHD-free controls. Multivariate analyses showed that subjects' voice emphasis [relative risk ratio (RR) = 1.25, p = .02] and latency of answering (RR = .78, p = .02) were significantly associated with CHD incidence when controlled for baseline levels of diastolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol, and cigarette smoking.
