A Critical Review of the Removal of Radionuclides from Wastewater Employing Activated Carbon as an Adsorbent

Radionuclide-contaminated water is carcinogenic and poses numerous severe health risks and environmental dangers. The activated carbon (AC)-based adsorption technique has great potential for treating radionuclide-contaminated water due to its simple design, high efficiency, wide pH range, quickness, low cost and environmental friendliness. This critical review first provides a brief overview of the concerned radionuclides with their associated health hazards as well as different removal techniques and their efficacy of removing them. Following this overview, this study summarizes the surface characteristics and adsorption capabilities of AC derived from different biomass precursors. It compares the adsorption performance of AC to other adsorbents, such as zeolite, graphene, carbon nano-tubes and metal-organic frameworks. Furthermore, this study highlights the different factors that influence the physical characteristics of AC and adsorption capacity, including contact time, solution pH, initial concentration of radionuclides, the initial dosage of the adsorbent, and adsorption temperature. The theoretical models of adsorption isotherm and kinetics, along with their fitting parameter values for AC/radionuclide pairs, are also reviewed. Finally, the modification procedures of pristine AC, factors determining AC characteristics and the impact of modifying agents on the adsorption ability of AC are elucidated in this study; therefore, further research and development can be promoted for designing a highly efficient and practical adsorption-based radionuclide removal system.

Radioactive waste treatments by using zeolites. A short review

Radionuclides in the environment is an important issue, many techniques have been developed for the removal of radionuclides from the environment. One of those techniques is the adsorption and natural and synthesized materials have been used to remove different radionuclides from water. The adsorbents used for removal of radionuclides should have high retention capacity and they should be resistant to radiation. One of the natural materials used is the zeolites due to its high ion exchange capacities, adsorption efficiency, resistance to radiation and abundance. The present review describes the advances made on radioactive waste treatments using zeolites as adsorbents, the elements: cesium, strontium, cobalt, molybdenum, uranium, plutonium, americium, samarium, and europium were selected according to their nuclear importance and their presence in the environment. Firstly, a brief description of the zeolites is given and then a review on the separation of these radionuclides from water by using zeolites is presented.

Extra-framework cation release from heulandite-type rich tuffs on exchange with NH(4)(+)

The outgoing cations of Greek heulandite-rich tuff samples (heulandite type-III, 91wt.%, mica 4wt.%, feldspar 5wt. %, CEC 2.22meq/g) were analysed upon exchange with ammonium acetate using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The kinetic curves of each cation were investigated over a total time of contact of 720h with sampling at frequent intervals. The materials were examined by powder X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDS, and AAS. The sorption ability was measured using the ammonium acetate saturation method. It was found that Ca(2+) presents an unexpected extra-framework release and a surprisingly high degree of exchange (90%). The exchange of Mg (57%) is also worthy of note whereas the behavior of K(+) showed an expected rapid initial release. The behavior of Na(+) must be similar. However, its lower concentration in the zeolitic material minimizes its overall significance somewhat. On the other hand, Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) release is kinetically much slower, compared to that of alkali metal ions, and this phenomenon indicates that different exchange energies are needed till final equilibrium.

Molecular dynamics simulation of uranyl(vi) adsorption equilibria onto an external montmorillonite surface

We used molecular dynamics simulations to study the adsorption of aqueous uranyl species (UO(2)(2+)) onto clay mineral surfaces in the presence of sodium counterions and carbonato ligands. The large system size (10,000 atoms) and long simulation times (10 ns) allowed us to investigate the thermodynamics of ion adsorption, and the atomistic detail provided clues for the observed adsorption behavior. The model system consisted of the basal surface of a low-charge Na-montmorillonite clay in contact with aqueous uranyl carbonate solutions with concentrations of 0.027 M, 0.081 M, and 0.162 M. Periodic boundary conditions were used in the simulations to better represent an aqueous solution interacting with an external clay surface. Uranyl adsorption tendency was found to decrease as the aqueous uranyl carbonate concentration was increased, while sodium adsorption remained constant. The observed behavior is explained by physical and chemical effects. As the ionic strength of the aqueous solution was increased, electrostatic factors prevented further uranyl adsorption once the surface charge had been neutralized. Additionally, the formation of aqueous uranyl carbonate complexes, including uranyl carbonato oligomers, contributed to the decreased uranyl adsorption tendency.
