Perovskite Thin Film Synthesised from Sputtered Lead Sulphide

In the last few years, research on dye-sensitised devices has been focused on the development of solar cells, based on CH₃NH₃PbX₃ (X = I⁻, Br⁻, Cl⁻) composites with perovskite structure. The deposition of perovskite thin films is usually carried out by solution-based processes using spin-coating techniques that result in the production of high quality films. Solar cells made by this method exceed 20% efficiency, with the potential for use in large scale production through ink print or screen printing techniques. As an alternative route, perovskite thin films can be deposited through thermal evaporation. A new method is proposed to produce CH₃NH₃PbI₃, based on a radio-frequency (rf) -sputtering technique that results in a high reproducibility of the films and is compatible with roll-to-roll processes. We deposited thin films of lead-sulphide (PbS) and converted them into perovskite by placing the films in an iodine atmosphere, followed by dipping in a solution of methylammonium iodide (CH₃NH₃I). The conversions to PbI₂ and CH₃NH₃PbI₃ were confirmed by elemental analyses, absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Structural properties were revealed by X-ray diffraction and infrared and Raman spectroscopy.

Surface potential mapping and n-type conductivity in organic–inorganic lead iodide crystals

We demonstrated the electronic structure of CH₃NH₃PbI₃ and its variation on the surface via surface potential and work function distribution.

Critical Role of Methylammonium Librational Motion in Methylammonium Lead Iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) Perovskite Photochemistry

Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy are used to investigate dynamic structure-function relationships in methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) perovskite. The intensity of the 150 cm^-1 methylammonium (MA) librational Raman mode is found to be correlated with PL intensities in microstructures of MAPbI₃. Because of the strong hydrogen bond between hydrogens in MA and iodine in the PbI₆ perovskite octahedra, the Raman activity of MA is very sensitive to structural distortions of the inorganic framework. The structural distortions directly influence PL intensities, which in turn have been correlated with microstructure quality. Our measurements, supported with first-principles calculations, indicate how excited-state MA librational displacements mechanistically control PL efficiency and lifetime in MAPbI₃-material parameters that are likely important for efficient photovoltaic devices.

Accelerated Thermal-Aging-Induced Degradation of Organometal Triiodide Perovskite on ZnO Nanostructures and Its Effect on Hybrid Photovoltaic Devices

Organometal halide perovskite materials are presently some of the pacesetters for light harvesting in hybrid photovoltaic devices because of their excellent inherent electrical and optical properties. However, long-term durability of such perovskite materials remains a major bottleneck for their commercialization especially in countries with hot and humid climatic conditions, thus violating the international standards for photovoltaic technology. Albeit, TiO2 as an electron-transport layer has been well investigated for perovskite solar cells; the high-temperature processing makes it unsuitable for low-cost and large-scale roll-to-roll production of flexible photovoltaic devices. Herein, we have chosen low-temperature (<150 °C)-processable nanostructured ZnO as the electron-selective layer and used a two-step method for sensitizing ZnO nanorods with methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite, which is viable for flexible photovoltaic devices. We have also elaborately addressed the effect of the annealing duration on the conversion of a precursor solution into the required perovskite phase on ZnO nanostructures. The investigations show that the presence of ZnO nanostructures accelerates the rate of degradation of MAPbI3 films under ambient annealing and thus requires proper optimization. The role of ZnO in enhancing the degradation kinetics of the perovskite layer has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and a buffer layer passivation technique. The effect of the annealing duration of the MAPbI3 perovskite on the optical, morphological, and compositional behavior has been closely studied and correlated with the photovoltaic efficiency. The study captures the degradation behavior of the commercially interesting MAPbI3 perovskite on a ZnO electron-transport layer and thus can provide insight for developing alternative families of perovskite material with better thermal and environmental stability for application in low-cost flexible photovoltaic technology.

Resonance Raman and excitation energy dependent charge transfer mechanism in halide-substituted hybrid perovskite solar cells

Organo-metal halide perovskites (OMHPs) are materials with attractive properties for optoelectronics. They made a recent introduction in the photovoltaics world by methylammonium (MA) lead triiodide and show remarkably improved charge separation capabilities when chloride and bromide are added. Here we show how halide substitution in OMHPs with the nominal composition CH3NH3PbI2X, where X is I, Br, or Cl, influences the morphology, charge quantum yield, and local interaction with the organic MA cation. X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence data demonstrate that halide substitution affects the local structure in the OMHPs with separate MAPbI3 and MAPbCl3 phases. Raman spectroscopies as well as theoretical vibration calculations reveal that this at the same time delocalizes the charge to the MA cation, which can liberate the vibrational movement of the MA cation, leading to a more adaptive organic phase. The resonance Raman effect together with quantum chemical calculations is utilized to analyze the change in charge transfer mechanism upon electronic excitation and gives important clues for the mechanism of the much improved photovoltage and photocurrent also seen in the solar cell performance for the materials when chloride compounds are included in the preparation.

Raman Spectroscopy of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskites

Micro-Raman spectroscopy provides laterally resolved microstructural information for a broad range of materials. In this Letter, we apply this technique to tri-iodide (CH3NH3PbI3), tribromide (CH3NH3PbBr3), and mixed iodide-bromide (CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx) organic-inorganic halide perovskite thin films and discuss necessary conditions to obtain reliable data. We explain how to measure Raman spectra of pristine CH3NH3PbI3 layers and discuss the distinct Raman bands that develop during moisture-induced degradation. We also prove unambiguously that the final degradation products contain pure PbI2. Moreover, we describe CH3NH3PbI3-xBrx Raman spectra and discuss how the perovskite crystallographic symmetries affect the Raman band intensities and spectral shapes. On the basis of the dependence of the Raman shift on the iodide-to-bromide ratio, we show that Raman spectroscopy is a fast and nondestructive method for the evaluation of the relative iodide-to-bromide ratio.
