Abstract
Vital pulp therapy aims to preserve the vitality of dental pulp exposed due to caries, trauma, or restorative procedures. The aim of the present review was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and histological outcomes of different calcium silicate-based cements used in vital pulp therapy for both primary and permanent teeth. The review included 40 randomized controlled trials from a search across PubMed, LILACS, and the Cochrane Collaboration, as well as manual searches and author inquiries according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. A critical assessment of studies was conducted, and after data extraction the results were submitted to a quantitative statistical analysis using meta-analysis. The studies, involving 1701 patients and 3168 teeth, compared a total of 18 different calcium silicate-based cements in both dentitions. The qualitative synthesis showed no significant differences in short-term outcomes (up to 6 months) between different calcium silicate-based cements in primary teeth. ProRoot MTA and Biodentine showed similar clinical and radiographic success rates at 6 and 12 months. In permanent teeth, although the global results appeared to be well balanced, ProRoot MTA generally seemed to perform better than other calcium silicate-based cements except for Biodentine, which had comparable or superior results at 6 months. Meta-analyses for selected comparisons showed no significant differences in clinical and radiographic outcomes between ProRoot MTA and Biodentine over follow-up periods. The present review highlights the need for standardized definitions of success and follow-up periods in future studies to better guide clinical decisions. Despite the introduction of new calcium silicate-based cements aiming to address limitations of the original MTA. ProRoot MTA and Biodentine remain the most used and reliable materials for vital pulp therapy, although the results did not deviate that much from the other calcium silicate-based cements. Further long-term studies are required to establish the optimal CSC for each clinical scenario in both dentitions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of blood and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), commonly used scaffolds in regenerative endodontic treatment (RET), on the hydration, microstructure, and color stability of three hydraulic calcium silicate cements (HCSCs), OrthoMTA, RetroMTA, and TotalFill-BC-RRM. MATERIALS AND METHODS The HCSCs were prepared and placed into polyethylene molds and transferred to Eppendorf tubes containing PRF, blood, or PBS and then incubated for 1 week or 1 month. The microstructure and hydration of the cements were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The chromatic alteration of materials was also measured using a spectrophotometer. The data for color stability were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the color stability of cements exposed to PBS (p > 0.05). The chromatic alteration of cements exposed to blood was significantly greater than those exposed to PRF and PBS (p < 0.001). In the presence of blood and PRF, the color change of OrthoMTA was significantly greater than that of RetroMTA and TotalFill (p < 0.05), with no significant difference between RetroMTA and TotalFill (p > 0.05). XRD analysis of all cements revealed a calcium hydroxide peak after 1-week and 1-month exposure to the media; however, OrthoMTA and TotalFill exposed to blood and PRF for 1 month showed weaker calcium hydroxide peaks. SEM images revealed cements exposed to PBS had a different surface microstructure compared to those exposed to blood and PRF. Furthermore, the surface microstructure of HCSCs was influenced by the type of cement radiopacifier (bismuth oxide or zirconium oxide). EDS analysis of the elemental composition in all groups displayed peaks of Ca, O, C, Si, P, and Al. CONCLUSIONS Color stability, hydration behavior, and microstructure of HCSCs were affected by exposure to PRF and blood and the type of cement radiopacifier. CLINICAL RELEVANCE As some important physicochemical properties of HCSCs could be influenced by the environmental conditions and the type of radiopacifier, alternatives to blood clot and HCSCs containing substitutes for bismuth oxide might be more suitable in RETs.

Abstract
Replantation is the treatment of choice for avulsed permanent teeth; ankylosis and cervical root resorption are among survival complications. A 9.5-year-old boy presented with an avulsed maxillary permanent central incisor with an open root apex following a school accident. The tooth was kept in milk, after a dry time of 15-20 min. Its replantation was performed 60 min after the accident. At 8 months, apexification with apical plug was attempted upon radiographic evidence of apical periodontitis. Ankylosis sound with infraocclusion and radiographic evidence of external cervical root resorption (ECR) were evident at 3 years and 3 months. At the patient's return one year later with esthetic concerns (2 mm infraocclusion) there was a 5 mm diameter ECR cavity. After intentional atraumatic extraction the resorptive cavity was debrided and restored with Biodentine; subsequently the tooth was reimplanted and splinted at an extruded position. At the 10-year follow up since the first avulsion the tooth remains esthetically pleasing, asymptomatic, non-ankylotic and functional. The present case supports intentional replantation as an option in managing infraoccluded teeth with advanced ECR.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION ECC (Early childhood caries) is very common in children. Because of the small size of primary anterior teeth, endodontic exposures occur early. Pulp tissue response after pulpotomy of primary anterior teeth by both MTA and Portland Cement is very important when pulp exposures occur in these teeth. AIM This study aimed to evaluate in vivo pulp tissue responses after the primary canines pulpotomy with either White Portland Cement (WPC) or White Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (WMTA), by histopathological analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 30 primary canines in 21 healthy children aged 6-9 years old and it was classified into 2 groups according to the material. Group 1: included 15 teeth capped by White Portland Cement, and Group 2: included 15 teeth capped by white MTA. The dentine bridge formation, soft Tissue Organization, tissue fibrosis, formed dentin bridge thickness, pulp calcifications, hemorrhage in the pulp tissue, and deposition of new dentin on the inner surface of the dentin at 3 months periods were recorded. RESULTS Data were analyzed statistically; the Mann-Whitney U test was performed for the assessment of histopathological criteria. Descriptive statistics were performed for the analysis of participant properties. Histopathological analysis showed complete dentin bridge formation and normal soft tissue organization for both materials. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in dentine bridge formation (P value = 0.213), soft Tissue Organization (P value = 0.339), tissue fibrosis (P value = 0.079), formed dentin bridge thickness (P value = 0.139), pulp calcifications (P value = 0.581), hemorrhage in the pulp tissue (P value = 0.117), and deposition of new dentin (P value = 0.097), during the observation period. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitation of the current study WPC was similar to WMTA in terms of histological criteria so PC may serve as a good alternative to MTA in primary teeth pulpotomy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Τo assess the outcome of direct pulp capping in asymptomatic carious primary molars using three pulp capping materials. METHODS In this prospective clinical trial, carious primary molars free of irreversible pulp inflammation signs and symptoms, with negative pain history and pulp exposure following caries removal were included. Teeth were divided into groups: A: Ca(OH)2, B: Pure Portland cement®, C: Biodentine™. Following anaesthesia, isolation, caries removal, pulp exposure, hemorrhage control, pulp capping, additional lining in groups A, B, teeth were restored with composite resin. Descriptive statistics, Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, multivariable random effects Cox regression model were performed. RESULTS Sixty-six patients (25 girls, 41 boys) with mean age 7.2 (± 1.7) years participated. The mean follow-up time was 13 months. Seventy-nine primary molars were assigned to groups A (n = 27), B (29), C (n = 23). The overall failure was 16% and the distribution by group was: A: 5 teeth, B: 5 teeth, C: 3 teeth. No significant differences in failure rates between capping materials, tooth types, age bands and genders were identified. CONCLUSIONS Direct pulp capping in asymptomatic carious primary molars may be an acceptable option, when treating an exposed pulp with bioceramic materials as pulp capping agents.

Abstract
Direct pulp capping consists of a procedure in which a material is directly placed over the exposed pulp to maintain dental vitality. Although still widely used in clinical practice, previous in vitro studies found that the biomaterial Life® presented high cytotoxicity, leading to cell death. This study aimed to identify the Life® constituents responsible for its cytotoxic effects on odontoblast-like cells (MDPC-23). Aqueous medium conditioned with Life® was subjected to liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate. After solvent removal, cells were treated with residues isolated from the organic and aqueous fractions. MTT and Trypan blue assays were carried out to evaluate the metabolic activity and cell death. The organic phase residue promoted a significant decrease in metabolic activity and increased cell death. On the contrary, no cytotoxic effects were observed with the mixture from the aqueous fraction. Spectroscopic and spectrometric methods allowed the identification of the toxic compounds. A mixture of the regioisomers ortho, para, and meta of N-ethyl-toluenesulfonamide was identified as the agent responsible for the toxicity of biomaterial Life® in MDPC-23 cells. These findings contribute to improving biomaterial research and development.

Abstract
Objective. This study aimed to colorimetric comparison of internal bleaching with and without removing mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) on induced coronal tooth discoloration by MTA cement. In this experimental study, twenty human teeth were prepared. An OrthoMTA barrier was placed 1 mm below the CEJ. The teeth were restored with composite resin and were placed in the aging accelerator machine. Then, the specimens were divided into two groups (n = 10); in group A, part of the OrthoMTA was removed and the glass ionomer was placed on the OrthoMTA, and in group B, the OrthoMTA remained intact. Internal bleaching was performed 5 times in 6-day intervals using 37% carbamide peroxide gel. Color determination was performed in 5 stages: baseline, after OrthoMTA discoloration, before OrthoMTA removal, after OrthoMTA removal, and after bleaching treatment sessions. In group A, 8 specimens reached to ∆E < 3.3 after 2 times internal bleaching treatment, and in group B, 5 specimens reached to ∆E < 3.3 with almost 3 bleaching sessions (p > 0.05). Additionally, 5 specimens reached to the initial color (baseline) after bleaching treatment, 4 specimens in group A and 1 specimen in group B. After OrthoMTA removal, 2 specimens in group A reached to ∆E < 3.3. There was no significant difference between groups with or without OrthoMTA removal (p=0.06). Although, the specimens with OrthoMTA removal required fewer bleaching treatment sessions, and the mean value of ∆E was lower in this group.

Abstract
Dental pulp vitality is a desideratum for preserving the health and functionality of the tooth. In certain clinical situations that lead to pulp exposure, bioactive agents are used in direct pulp-capping procedures to stimulate the dentin-pulp complex and activate reparative dentinogenesis. Hydraulic calcium-silicate cements, derived from Portland cement, can induce the formation of a new dentin bridge at the interface between the biomaterial and the dental pulp. Odontoblasts are molecularly activated, and, if necessary, undifferentiated stem cells in the dental pulp can differentiate into odontoblasts. An extensive review of literature was conducted on MedLine/PubMed database to evaluate the histological outcomes of direct pulp capping with hydraulic calcium-silicate cements performed on animal models. Overall, irrespective of their physico-chemical properties and the molecular mechanisms involved in pulp healing, the effects of cements on tertiary dentin formation and pulp vitality preservation were positive. Histological examinations showed different degrees of dental pulp inflammatory response and complete/incomplete dentin bridge formation during the pulp healing process at different follow-up periods. Calcium silicate materials have the ability to induce reparative dentinogenesis when applied over exposed pulps, with different behaviors, as related to the animal model used, pulpal inflammatory responses, and quality of dentin bridges.

Abstract
Two increasingly common endodontic procedures, vital pulp therapy (VPT) and regenerative endodontic procedures, rely on dental tissue regeneration/repair mechanisms with the aid of biomaterials. These materials are applied in close contact to the pulpal tissue and are required to be biocompatible, form an antimicrobial seal, not induce staining, and be easy to manipulate. Historically, calcium hydroxide played an important role in VPT. However, over the last 3 decades, significant efforts in research and industry have been made to develop various biomaterials, including hydraulic tricalcium silicate cements. The present review summarized various hydraulic tricalcium silicate cements and their biological properties in clinical procedures, namely VPT and regenerative endodontic procedures.

Abstract
Introduction: Bioceramic materials, gray and white mineral trioxide aggregate (GMTA, WMTA), have been shown to have high rates of success in various endodontic applications. A major drawback is their tendency to discolor teeth. Biodentine (BD), a recenlty developed bioceramic material, has been claimed not to discolor teeth. The aim of this study was to compare tooth discoloration after applying different pulpotomy base materials (BD, GMTA and WMTA). Methods: Forty human fully developed primary incisors teeth were used in this study. Coronal access was achieved by a Tungsten Carbide drill, and the pulp chambers were accessed and chemo-mechanically debrided. Each material was placed in the pulp chamber, up to the cervical sectioning level. All specimens were incubated at 37°C and 100% humidity for 14 weeks and have been evaluated before the study and weekly. Color was assessed according to the CIE L*a*b* color space system. Results: The ΔE (delta E) of all experimental groups (GMTA, WMTA and BD) were significantly different from the control group at all time points. Color changes in the GMTA and WMTA groups showed significantly higher discoloration compared to BD group in the cervical part of the crown, since week 1. WMTA group showed significant discoloration in the cervical part as of week 1, and gradually increased over time. BD group showed no significant discoloration over time. GMTA group showed the most significant discoloration at week 1 and week 14 (P<0.05). Conclusions: both GMTA and WMTA pulpotomy materials may discolor tooth structure over time in an extracted primary anterior tooth model. When choosing bioceramic pulpotomy material, BD may be preferable, mainly in esthetic area.

Abstract
Calcium silicate-based cements are known for their wide applications in dentistry and orthopedics. The alkaline pH (up to 12) of these cements limits their application in other orthopedic areas. In this study, the effect of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) coating on set cement on pH reduction and biocompatibility improvement was examined. Samples with 0 and 10 weight ratio DCPD were prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM. The DCPD coating on the set cement was performed by a 7 d immersion in 1% monocalcium phosphate (MCP) solution and characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and EDX. Also, the compressive strength and cytotoxicity of the samples were tested. The results showed that DCPD coating did not significantly change the compressive strength of the cement, but by decreasing the pH of the culture medium to the physiological range, it led to enhance adhesion, spreading and proliferation of human osteosarcoma cell line (Saos-2). The novel DCPD coated calcium silicate-based cement could be served as a bulk or porous bone substitute and scaffold.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioactivity potential of an hydraulic calcium-silicate cement, Pure Portland Cement Med-PZ (Medcem, Weinfelden, Switzerland: 'MPC'), applied in a tooth extracted because of failed regenerative endodontic procedures (REP) and by means of ex vivo (EV) specimens. METHODS Ten EV cylindrical dentin cavities were prepared and filled with MPC and stored for 1 month in distilled water (DW), Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS), Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline (DPBS), simulated body fluid (SBF), versus no media (NM) serving as control. Six additional EV specimens were filled with MPC and exposed for 2 weeks to leucocyte-and-platelet-rich fibrin (LPRF)-clot (C), LPRF-membrane (M) and LPRF-exudate (E). MPC in the EV specimens and in the coronal part of the REP tooth was analyzed by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy (MR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). RESULTS SEM showed rough crystallite surfaces for the EV samples and a porous surface for the REP tooth. EDS of the EV samples revealed prominent peaks for Ca, Si and O. Storage in HBSS, DPBS, SBF, exposure to LPRF and the REP tooth showed considerable amounts of P as well. MR exhibited vibrations of phosphate (DPBS, SBF), carbonated hydroxyapatite (DPBS, SBF), calcium carbonate (DW, HBSS, NM, REP-tooth, LPRF-E), oxidized (ferric) proteins (LPRF-E/C/M) and the amide III band (all samples). Hence, only storage of MPC in DPBS and SBF for 1 month revealed bioactivity. SIGNIFICANCE The environmental conditions, namely the laboratory and clinical settings, affect the bioactivity potential of MPC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Regenerative endodontic procedures (REP) are a novel treatment modality to restore the function of necrotic pulp tissue via stimulation or transplantation of stem cells into the root canal. This study aimed to investigate the immunohistologic outcome of 3 extracted teeth because of sequelae of trauma and unsatisfactory REP outcomes. METHODS Three immature permanent maxillary central incisors of 3 female patients (6-9 years) were extracted 5.5-22 months after REP. Additionally, 1 sound permanent immature central maxillary incisor of 1 of the included patients was extracted for orthodontic reasons. The teeth were immunohistologically stained with Masson's trichrome, neurofilament (NF), pan cytokeratin, dentin sialophosphoprotein, and Gram+/-. RESULTS The REP-teeth presented intracanalar vascularized connective/mineralized reparative tissue (RT), which was less organized than the pulp tissue of the sound tooth. Moderate to considerable calcification was observed below the Portland cement used during REP. In 1 case, the RT was NF+; in the 2 other cases, the periodontal ligament and apical granuloma/papilla were NF+. All teeth were Gram+/- negative; nevertheless, inflammatory cells were present in 2 cases. The pan cytokeratin and dentin sialophosphoprotein stainings were not specific enough for 2 cases. CONCLUSIONS This immunohistologic study of failed REP cases resulted in bacteria-free intracanalar RT and biomaterial-induced calcification. Nevertheless, the presence of inflammatory cells revealed a persistent inflammation. Hence, the clinical and radiographic signs were decisive for tooth survival and multidisciplinary outcome determination.

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of two modified formulations of Portland cement (PC) mixed with either titanium oxide or both titanium oxide and calcium chloride. Methods and Materials: Polyethylene tubes were filled with modified PCs or Angelus MTA as the control; the tubes were then implanted in 28 Wistar rats subcutaneously. One tube was left empty as a negative control in each rat. Histologic samples were taken after 7, 15, 30 and 60 days. Sections were assessed histologically for inflammatory responses and presence of fibrous capsule and granulation tissue formation. Data were analyzed using the Fisher’s exact and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Result: PC mixed with titanium oxide showed the highest mean scores of inflammation compared with others. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean inflammatory grades between all groups in each of the understudy time intervals. Conclusion: The results showed favorable biocompatibility of these modified PC mixed with calcium chloride and titanium oxide.

Abstract
In this study the sol-gel process was used to synthesize a precursor mixture for the preparation of silicate cement, also called mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) cement. This mixture was thermally treated under two different conditions (1400 °C/2 h and 1450 °C/3 h) followed by rapid cooling in air. The resulted material (clinker) was ground for one hour in a laboratory planetary mill (v = 150 rot/min), in order to obtain the MTA cements. The setting time and mechanical properties, in vitro induction of apatite formation by soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) and cytocompatibility of the MTA cements were assessed in this study. The hardening processes, nature of the reaction products and the microstructural characteristics were also investigated. The anhydrous and hydrated cements were characterized by different techniques e.g., X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermal analysis (DTA-DTG-TG). The setting time of the MTA cement obtained by thermal treatment at 1400 °C/2 h (MTA1) was 55 min and 15 min for the MTA cement obtained at 1450 °C/3 h (MTA2). The compressive strength values were 18.5 MPa (MTA1) and 22.9 MPa (MTA2). Both MTA cements showed good bioactivity (assessed by an in vitro test), good cytocompatibility and stimulatory effect on the proliferation of cells.

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare the discoloration potential of calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement, white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) and calcium hydroxide (CH), after placement in pulp chamber. Methods and Materials: Access cavities were prepared in 40 intact maxillary central incisors. Then, a 2×2 mm box was prepared on the middle third of the inner surface on the buccal wall of the access cavity. The specimens were randomly assigned into four groups; the boxes in the control group were left empty, in groups 1 to 3, the boxes were filled with CH, WMTA and CEM cement, respectively. The access cavities and the apical openings were sealed using resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI). The color measurement was performed with a spectrophotometer at the following intervals: before (T0), immediately after placement of the filling material (T1), one week (T2), 1 month (T3), 3 months (T4) and 5 months (T5) after filling of the box and finally immediately after removing the material from the boxes (T6). Color change (ΔE) values were calculated using the sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to determine the normal distribution of data, followed by ANOVA, repeated measured ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s tests. Results: All materials led to clinically perceptible crown discoloration after 1 week. The highest ΔE value belonged to WMTA group. Discoloration induced by CEM cement was not significantly different from CH or the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion: CEM cement may be the material of choice in the esthetic region, specifically pertaining to its lower color changing potential compared to WMTA.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate the response of Portland cement associated with different radio pacifying agents on pulp treatment of human primary teeth by clinical and radiographic exams and microscopic analysis. Thirty mandibular primary molars were randomly divided into the following groups: Group I - Portland cement; Group II - Portland cement with iodoform (Portland cement + CHI3 ); Group III - Portland cement with zirconium oxide (Portland cement + ZrO2 ); and treated by pulpotomy technique (removal of a portion of the pulp aiming to maintain the vitally of the remaining radicular pulp tissue using a therapeutic dressing). Clinical and radiographic evaluations were recorded at 6, 12 and 24 months follow-up. The teeth at the regular exfoliation period were extracted and processed for histological analysis. Data were tested using statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. The microscopic findings were descriptively analysed. All treated teeth were clinically and radiographically successful at follow-up appointments. The microscopic analysis revealed positive response to pulp repair with hard tissue barrier formation and pulp calcification in the remaining roots of all available teeth. The findings of this study suggest that primary teeth pulp tissue exhibited satisfactory biological response to Portland cement associated with radio pacifying agents. However, further studies with long-term follow-up are needed to determine the safe clinical indication of this alternative material for pulp therapy of primary teeth.

Abstract
The aim of this paper was to review the history and the scientific literature published on pulpotomy medicaments and to present the findings of these studies. The review showed that pulpotomy of primary teeth has been treated with many different techniques and medicaments, that some of these approaches are controversial and that their results have presented variables of success rates in term of clinical, radiographic and histologic observation. It is important that all clinicians, particularly for pediatric dentists, be up to date with the recent trends in this area of dental treatment for children.

Abstract
Calcium silicate-based materials (also called MTA) are increasingly being used in endodontic applications. However, the handling properties of MTA are not optimal when it comes to injectability and cohesion. Premixing the cements using glycerol avoids these issues. However, there is a lack of data on the effect of common cement variables on important properties of premixed cements for endodontic applications. In this study, the effects of liquid-to-powder ratio, amount of radiopacifier and amount of calcium sulfate (added to control the setting time) were screened using a statistical model. In the second part of the study, the liquid-to-powder ratio was optimized for cements containing three different amounts of radiopacifier. Finally, the effect of using glycerol rather than water was evaluated in terms of radiopacity. The setting time was found to increase with the amount of radiopacifier when the liquid-to-powder ratio was fixed. This was likely due to the higher density of the radiopacifier in comparison to the calcium silicate, which gave a higher liquid-to-powder ratio in terms of volume. Using glycerol rather than water to mix the cements led to a decrease in radiopacity of the cement. In conclusion, we were able to produce premixed calcium silicate cements with acceptable properties for use in endodontic applications.

METHODS One gram of each corresponding powder of ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Johnson City, TN), MTA Angelus (Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil), and CEM cement (BioniqueDent, Tehran, Iran) and a 0.33-g aliquot of liquid were placed in a plastic mixing capsule that was then mechanically mixed for 30 seconds at 4500 rpm in an amalgamator. For the preparation of Biodentine (Septodont, Saint Maur-des-Fossés, France), the liquid provided was added to the powder within the plastic capsule supplied by the manufacturer and then mechanically mixed for 30 seconds at 4500 rpm using the amalgamator. The resulting slurries were then placed incrementally into 40 cylindrical molds to give a total of 160 specimens that were incubated at 37°C for a week. Twenty specimens of each material were then subjected to the acid etch procedure. The compressive strength of the samples was then calculated in megapascals using a universal testing machine. The results were then subjected to 2-way analysis of variance analysis of variance followed by the Tukey post hoc test. RESULTS The application of acid etch significantly reduced (P < .0001) the compressive strength of Angelus MTA and CEM cement; however, it did not reduce the compressive strength of ProRoot MTA or Biodentine. Regardless of the acid etch application, Biodentine showed significantly higher compressive strength values than the other materials (P < .0001), whereas CEM cement had the lowest compressive strength values. There was no significant difference between CEM cement and MTA Angelus. The compressive strength of ProRoot MTA was significantly lower (P < .0001) than Biodentine but significantly higher (P < .0001) than MTA Angelus and CEM cement in both the test and control groups. CONCLUSIONS When the application of acid etchants is required, Biodentine and ProRoot MTA seem to be better options than MTA Angelus or CEM cement.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of rat subcutaneous tissue to MTA Fillapex® (Angelus), an experimental root canal filling material based on Portland cement and propylene glycol (PCPG), and a zinc oxide, eugenol and iodoform (ZOEI) paste. These materials were placed in polyethylene tubes and implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of Wistar rats for 7 and 15 days. The specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and evaluated regarding inflammatory reaction parameters by optical microscopy. The intensity of inflammatory response against the sealers was analyzed by two blinded and previously calibrated examiners for all experimental periods (kappa=0.96). The histological evaluation showed that all materials caused a moderate inflammatory reaction at 7 days, which subsided with time. A greater inflammatory reaction was observed at 7 days in the tubes filled with ZOEI paste. Tubes filled with MTA Fillapex presented some giant cells, macrophages and lymphocytes after 7 days. At 15 days, the presence of fibroblasts and collagen fibers was observed indicating normal tissue healing. The tubes filled with PCPG showed similar results to those observed in MTA Fillapex. At 15 days, the inflammatory reaction was almost absent at the tissue, with several collagen fibers indicating normal tissue healing. Data were analyzed by the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (α=0.05). Statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was found only between PCPG at 15 days and ZOEI at 7 days groups. No significant differences were observed among the other groups/periods (p>0.05). MTA Fillapex and Portland cement added with propylene glycol had greater tissue compatibility than the PCPG paste.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the discoloration potential of endodontic materials using a bovine tooth model. METHODOLOGY Two hundred and 10 dentine-enamel cuboid blocks (10 × 10 × 3.5 mm) were prepared out of the middle thirds of bovine tooth crowns. Standardized cavities were prepared in the walls of the pulp chamber leaving 2 mm of enamel and dentine on the labial wall of the crown. The specimens were randomly assigned to 14 groups (n = 15). Endodontic materials were placed into the cavities as follows: group A: empty, group B: blood, group C: calcium hydroxide, group D: ApexCal, group E: Ultracal XS, group F: Ledermix, group G: triple antibiotic paste (3Mix), group H: grey MTA(GMTA), group I: GMTA + blood, group J: white MTA (WMTA), group K: WMTA + blood, group L: Portland cement (PC), group M: PC + blood and group N: AH Plus. The cavities were sealed with composite and stored in water. Standardized colour measurement (VITA Easyshade compact) was performed at the following intervals: prior to (T0) and after placement of the filling (T1), 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), 3 months (T4), 6 months (T5) and after 1 year (T6). Colour change (ΔE) values were calculated. A two-way analysis of variance was used to assess significant differences between the endodontic materials. The mean values of all groups were compared using the Tukey multiple comparison test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences were detected amongst the experimental groups after 12 months (P < 0.0001). The lowest colour change values were observed in the groups N (AH Plus, 3.2 ± 1.5), A (empty, 3.8 ± 1.4), L (PC, 4.1 ± 1.7), C (calcium hydroxide, 4.7 ± 1.5), E (Ultracal XS, 5.1 ± 1.9) and J (WMTA, 7.9 ± 6.7). The most discoloration was measured in groups G (3Mix, 66.2 ± 9.9) and F (Ledermix, 46.2 ± 11.6). PC showed the best colour stability amongst the Portland cement-based materials; however, when contaminated with blood (group M), a significantly higher ΔE value (13.6 ± 4.2) was detected (P = 0.032). CONCLUSION Materials used in endodontics may stain teeth. Therefore, the choice of material should not rely solely on biological and functional criteria, but also take aesthetic considerations into account.
