Assessment of ZTD Derived from COSMIC Occultation Data with ECWMF, Radiosondes, and GNSS

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals generate slant tropospheric delays when they pass through the atmosphere, which is recognized as the main source of error in many spatial geodetic applications. The zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) derived from radio occultation data is of great significance to atmospheric research and meteorology and needs to be assessed in the use of precision positioning. Based on the atmPrf, sonPrf, and echPrf data from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) Data Analysis and Archiving Center (CDAAC) from 1 January to 31 December 2008 and 2012, we obtained the ZTDs of the radio occultation data (occZTD) and the corresponding radiosonde (sonZTD) and ECWMF data (echZTD). The ZTDs derived from ground-based global positioning system (GPS) observations from the International GNSS Service (IGS) were corrected to the lowest tangent point height of the matched radio occultation profile by the barometric height formula (gnsZTD). The statistical results show that the absolute values of the bias between occZTD and echZTD, sonZTD, or gnsZTD are less than 5 mm, and the standard deviations are approximately 20 mm or less, indicating that occZTD had significant accuracy in the GNSS positioning model even when the local spherical symmetry assumption error was introduced when the Abel inversion algorithm was used to obtain the refractive index profile of atmPrf. The effects of the horizontal/vertical matching resolution and the variation in the station height/latitude on the biases of occZTD and gnsZTD were analyzed. The results can be used to quantify the performance of radio occultation data for tropospheric delay error correction in dynamic high-precision positioning.

Geodetic SAR for Height System Unification and Sea Level Research—Observation Concept and Preliminary Results in the Baltic Sea

Traditionally, sea level is observed at tide gauge stations, which usually also serve as height reference stations for national leveling networks and therefore define a height system of a country. One of the main deficiencies to use tide gauge data for geodetic sea level research and height systems unification is that only a few stations are connected to the geometric network of a country by operating permanent GNSS receivers next to the tide gauge. As a new observation technique, absolute positioning by SAR using active transponders on ground can fill this gap by systematically observing time series of geometric heights at tide gauge stations. By additionally knowing the tide gauge geoid heights in a global height reference frame, one can finally obtain absolute sea level heights at each tide gauge. With this information the impact of climate change on the sea level can be quantified in an absolute manner and height systems can be connected across the oceans. First results from applying this technique at selected tide gauges at the Baltic coasts are promising but also exhibit some problems related to the new technique. The paper presents the concept of using the new observation type in an integrated sea level observing system and provides some early results for SAR positioning in the Baltic sea area.

VMF3o: the Vienna Mapping Functions for optical frequencies

The troposphere is considered as one of the major error sources in space geodetic techniques. Thus, accurate troposphere delay models are essential to provide high-quality products, such as reference frames, satellite orbits, or Earth rotation parameters. In this paper, a new troposphere delay model for satellite laser ranging, the Vienna Mapping Functions 3 for optical frequencies (VMF3o), is introduced. The model parameters are derived from ray-traced delays generated by an in-house ray-tracing software. VMF3o comprises not only zenith delays and mapping functions, but also linear horizontal gradients, which are not part of the standard SLR analysis yet. The model parameters are dedicated to a signal wavelength of 532 nm. Since some SLR stations operate also with other wavelengths, VMF3o provides a correction formula to transform the model parameters to any requested wavelength between 350 and 1064 nm. A test demonstrates that the correction formula approximates slant delays calculated at different wavelengths very accurately. The remaining error for slant delays at a wavelength of 1064 nm adds up to only a few millimetres at 10 ∘ elevation angle. A comparison study of the modelled delays that are derived from VMF3o and ray-traced delays was carried out to examine the quality of the model approach. The remaining differences of modelled and ray-traced delays are expressed as mean absolute error. At 5 ∘ elevation angle, the mean absolute error is only a few millimetres. At 10 ∘ elevation angle, it is at the 1 mm level. The results of the comparison also reveal that introducing linear horizontal gradients reduces the mean absolute error by more than 80% for low elevation angles.

A Tropospheric Tomography Method with a Novel Height Factor Model Including Two Parts: Isotropic and Anisotropic Height Factors

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) tomography has developed into an efficient tool for sensing the high spatiotemporal variability of atmospheric water vapor. The integration of GNSS top signals and side rays for tropospheric tomography systems using a novel height factor model (HFM) is proposed and discussed in this paper. Within the HFM, the sectional slant wet delay (SWD) of inside signals (the part of the side signal inside the tomography area), which is considered a key factor for modeling side rays, is separated into isotropic and anisotropic components. Correspondingly, two height factors are defined to calculate the isotropic and anisotropic part of tropospheric delays in the HFM. In addition, the dynamic tomography top boundary is first analyzed and determined based on 30-year radiosonde data to reasonably divide signals into top and side rays. Four special experimental schemes based on different tomography regions of Hong Kong are performed to assess the proposed HFM method, the results of which show increases of 33.42% in the mean utilization of rays, as well as decreases of 0.46 g/m3 in the average root mean square error (RMSE), compared to the traditional approach, revealing the improvement of tomography solutions when the side signals are included in the modeling. Furthermore, compared with the existing correction model for modeling side rays, the water vapor profiles retrieved from the proposed improved model are closer to the radiosonde data, which highlights the advantages of the proposed HFM for optimizing the GNSS tomography model.
