Substituents’ influence on the C–H···π interaction in the T-shaped benzene dimer

On the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution dynamics of aromatic complexes: A comparative study on C6H6-C6H5Cl, C6H6-C6H3Cl3, C6H6-C6Cl6 and C6H6-C6H5F, C6H6-C6H3F3, C6H6-C6F6

Chemical dynamics Simulation studies on benzene dimer (Bz2) and benzene-hexachlorobenzene (Bz-HCB) as performed in the past suggest that the coupling between the monomeric (intramolecular) vibrational modes and modes generated due to the association of two monomers (intermolecular) has to be neither strong nor weak for a fast dissociation of the complex. To find the optimum coupling, four complexes are taken into consideration in this work, namely, benzene-monofluorobenzene, benzene-monochlorobenzene, benzene-trifluorobenzene (Bz-TFB), and benzene-trichlorobenzene. Bz-TFB has the highest rate of dissociation among all seven complexes, including Bz2, Bz-HCB, and Bz-HFB (HFB stands for hexafluorobenzene). The set of vibrational frequencies of Bz-TFB is mainly the reason for this fast dissociation. The mass of chlorine in Bz-HCB is optimized to match its vibrational frequencies similar to those of Bz-TFB, and the dissociation of Bz-HCB becomes faster. The power spectrum of Bz-TFB, Bz-HCB, and Bz-HCB with the modified mass of chlorine is also computed to understand the extent of the said coupling in these complexes.

Structures and Supramolecular Properties of Inclusion Complexes of Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocages with Fullerene Guests and Their Dynamic Motion as Molecular Gyroscopes

Three derivatives of macrocyclic cage compounds consisting of diarylanthracene and triptycene units were synthesized. These nanocages formed host-guest complexes with C₆₀ and other fullerene guests as confirmed by ¹ H NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The association constant of the mesityl and 2,4,6-tributoxyphenyl derivatives with C₆₀ was determined to be 2.2 × 10⁴  L mol^-1 , which was larger than that of the pentafluorophenyl derivative. Direct experimental evidence of the complexation was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis: the guest C₆₀ molecule was included in the cavity via multipoint CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. Dynamic disorders of the included C₆₀ molecule in variable-temperature X-ray analysis indicated uniaxial motion, such as gyroscopic motion. The unique dynamic behavior of the spherical C₆₀ rotor anchored by the cage stator via CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions in the crystal, as well as substituent effects on the association properties, are discussed with the aid of DFT calculations.

Organic removal from coal-to-chemical brine by a multistage system of adsorption-regeneration and electrochemically driven UV/chlorine processes

Treatment of coal-to-gas brine (CGB) is a great challenge since it contains elevated inorganic salts and a high level of toxic and bio-accumulative organics. In this study, CGB treatment was conducted by adsorptionregeneration and electrochemically driven UV/chlorine (E-UV/Cl₂) processes. LS-109D macroporous resin was optimal adsorbent primarily due to unique pore structure, which preferably adsorbed the aromatic fluorescent components with quenching Cl∙ effect and low molecular weight acids recalcitrant to ∙OH. The E-UV/Cl₂ process outperformed the UV photolysis process and electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) for oxidation of organic compounds due to its full utilization of Cl^- in CGB to produce highly active oxidation agents. Thanks to the synergy between process units in organic matter removal, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of CGB was reduced from 163.41 mg/L to 26.58 mg/L by the multistage system. Furthermore, the CGB with characteristics of high fluorescence and molecular weight (MW) distribution was converted to effluent with low fluorescence and MW distribution. The exhausted LS-109D was regenerated by ultrasound-assisted hot water elution at 363 K. After pretreated by ozonation, the eluate can be easily treated by biological process. The study suggests that the multistage system can provide an effective treatment option for removing organics from CGB.

Physical Mechanisms Governing Substituent Effects on Arene-Arene Interactions in a Protein Milieu

Arene-arene interactions play important roles in protein-ligand complex formation. Here, we investigate the characteristics of arene-arene interactions between small organic molecules and aromatic amino acids in protein interiors. The study is based on X-ray crystallographic data and quantum mechanical calculations using the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and selected inhibitory ligands as a model system. It is shown that the arene substituents of the inhibitors dictate the strength of the interaction and the geometry of the resulting complexes. Importantly, the calculated interaction energies correlate well with the measured inhibitor potency. Non-hydrogen substituents strengthened all interaction types in the protein milieu, in keeping with results for benzene dimer model systems. The interaction energies were dispersion-dominated, but substituents that induced local dipole moments increased the electrostatic contribution and thus yielded more strongly bound complexes. These findings provide fundamental insights into the physical mechanisms governing arene-arene interactions in the protein milieu and thus into molecular recognition between proteins and small molecules.
