Interactions between rotenone and humic acids by means of FT-IR and fluorescence spectroscopies

Photoenhanced heterogeneous reaction of O3 with humic acid: Focus on O3 uptake and changes in the composition and optical property

Heterogeneous photochemical reaction of O₃ with humic acid (HA) under simulated sunlight was performed using a flow tube reactor coupled to an O₃ analyzer at ambient pressure. It was confirmed that light significantly enhanced the uptake of O₃ on HA. The initial uptake coefficient (γ_i) and the steady-state uptake coefficient (γ_ss) of O₃ under irradiation increased by 1.6 and 3.8 times compared to those in the dark, respectively. The γ_i and γ_ss on HA varied in the range of 0.76-2.77 × 10^-5 and 1.50-9.55 × 10^-6, respectively, which were dependent on various environmental factors including HA mass, total irradiance, initial O₃ concentration, O₂ content, temperature, relative humidity (RH) and HA solution pH. Both γ_i and γ_ss showed linear dependence on the total irradiance (0-2.07 × 10¹⁶ photons/(cm²⋅s)) of the light source, and increased with the HA mass (0-3.2 μg/cm²), temperature (278-298 K) and HA solution pH (4.0-9.6). However, they showed negative correlations with the initial O₃ concentration and O₂ content. The γ_i remained constant in the RH range of 7%-60%, while γ_ss exhibited the maximum value at RH = 20%. During the ozonization of HA under irradiation, some functional groups were consumed, including CH₂, CH₃, aromatic CC, OH, CO, COOH and COO^-. HA aged by O₃ exhibited a decrease in the mass absorption efficiency (MAE) and a small increase in the absorption Ångström exponent between 300 and 600 nm wavelength (AAE_300,600), which was ascribed to changes in the composition of HA during the photochemical ozonization process.

Chitosan-Ellagic Acid Nanohybrid for Mitigating Rotenone-induced Oxidative Stress

Antioxidants derived from nature, such as ellagic acid (EA), demonstrated high potency to mitigate neuronal oxidative stress and related pathologies, including Parkinson's disease. However, the application of EA is limited due to its toxicity at moderate doses and poor solubility, cellular permeability, and bioavailability. Here, we introduce a sustainably resourced, green nanoencasement strategy to overcome the limitations of EA and derive synergistic effects to prevent oxidative stress in neuronal cells. Chitosan, with its high biocompatibility, potential antioxidant properties, and flexible surface chemistry, was chosen as the primary component of the nanoencasement in which EA is immobilized. Using a rotenone model to mimic intracellular oxidative stress, we examined the effectiveness of EA and chitosan to limit cell death. Our studies indicate a synergistic effect between EA and chitosan in mitigating rotenone-induced reactive oxygen species death. Our analysis suggests that chitosan encapsulation of EA reduces the inherent cytotoxicity of the polyphenol (a known anticancer molecule). Furthermore, its encapsulation permits its delivery via a rapid burst phase and a relatively slow phase making the nanohybrid suitable for drug release over extended time periods.

Effects of a controlled freeze-thaw event on dissolved and colloidal soil organic matter

This study investigated the effects of the freezing and thawing that accompany the warming process on the composition of the soil organic matter in the dissolved and colloidal fractions. Temperate soil samples were incubated in a refrigerator at 2 °C for 4 weeks and compared with those frozen at -20 °C in the second week followed by thawing at 2 °C to study a freeze-thaw effect with minimal effect from the thawing temperature. The freeze-thaw group was compared with those incubated at 25 °C in the last week to investigate a warming effect after thawing. Thawing at 2 °C after freezing at -20 °C increased the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), but decreased colloidal Ca. The subsequent warming condition greatly increased both DOC and colloidal Ca. The colloidal organic carbon (COC) and dissolved Ca showed rather subtle changes in response to the freeze-thaw and warming treatments compared to the changes in DOC and colloidal Ca. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and Fourier transformation-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) results showed that the freeze-thaw and warming treatments gave the opposite effects on the compositions of dissolved humic-like substances, polysaccharides or silicates, and aliphatic alcohols. A principal component analysis (PCA) with the DOC, fluorescence EEM, and FT-IR spectra produced two principal components that successfully distinguished the effects of the freeze-thaw and warming treatments. Due to the contrasting effects of the freeze-thaw and warming treatments, the overall effects of freeze-thaw events in nature on the dissolved and colloidal soil organic matter could vary depending on the thawing temperature.

Mechanisms of interaction between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and dissolved organic matters

Binding of phenanthrene and fluorene to a number of humic and fulvic substances isolated from various sources as well as a commercially available humic acid, was investigated using a fluorescence quenching approach. The observed fluorescence quenching indicated by linear Stern-Volmer plots and high bimolecular quenching rate constant was induced by a static interaction process. A significant correlation of binding constants with aromaticity and polarity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was observed. It is hypothesized that the binding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by DOM is due to both π-π interactions and hydrophobic interactions. In addition, energy transfer from PAHs to DOM occurs because of the significant overlap between the absorbance spectra of DOM and emission spectra of PAHs. Thus, dipole-dipole interaction may also play an important role in the binding mechanism between PAHs and DOM.
