Morphology and kinetic modeling of molecularly imprinted organosilanol polymer matrix for specific uptake of creatinine

Molecularly-imprinted pumice as a selective solid-phase extraction adsorbent for kojic acid determination in cosmetic samples

Herein, a highly sensitive molecularly-imprinted pumice (MIP-PMC) was tailored by employed the surface imprinting method and utilized as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the fast and selective separation of kojic acid (KA) from cosmetic samples. The MIP-PMC was characterized in a systematic manner and found it to be a well-grown polymer layer on the PMC. The adsorption capacity of MIP-PMC was 89.9 mg/g, with an equilibrium adsorption time of 30 min. Moreover, the imprinting factor of MIP-PMC towards KA was found to be 3.28, which further demonstrated its evident selectivity for KA. Under optimized conditions, KA was successfully isolated from cosmetic products using MIP-PMC and quantified via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry. Method validation demonstrated excellent linearity within the range of 0.04-400 mg/L, satisfactory precision (less than 5 %), and high recoveries (98.0-100.4 %). Furthermore, the method exhibited a low limit of detection (LOD) of 12.8 μg/L with a preconcentration factor of 4. Moreover, the sensitivity of the developed method was also checked by using HPLC and the method has comparable analytical performance. The findings indicate that the integration of MIP-PMC based SPE with UV-vis spectrophotometry offers a highly efficient approach for sample pretreatment and the accurate determination of KA in real samples.

Al3+-Responsive Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor for Creatinine Detection: Thioflavin-T and Sulfated-β-Cyclodextrin Synergy

Kidney disorders are a rising global health issue, necessitating early diagnosis for effective treatment. Creatinine, a metabolic waste product from muscles, serves as an ideal biomarker for kidney damage. The existing optical methods for creatinine detection often involve labor-intensive synthesis processes and present challenges with the aqueous solubility and sensitivity to experimental variations. In this study, we introduce a straightforward fluorescence "turn-on" ratiometric sensor system for creatinine detection in aqueous media with a limit of detection of 0.5 μM. The sensor is based on sulfated-β-cyclodextrin (SCD)-templated H-aggregate of a commercially available, ultrafast rotor dye thioflavin-T (ThT). The Al3+ ion-induced dissociation of ThT-SCD aggregates, followed by reassociation upon creatinine addition, generates a detectable signal. The modulation of monomer/aggregate equilibrium due to the disassembly/reassembly of the ThT-SCD system under Al3+/creatinine influence serves as the optimal strategy for ratiometric creatinine detection in aqueous media. Our sensor framework offers several advantages: utilization of the readily available dye ThT, which eliminates the need for a laborious synthesis of custom fluorescent probes; ratiometric sensing, which improves quantitative analysis accuracy; and compatibility with complex aqueous media. The sensor's practical utility has been successfully demonstrated in artificial urine samples. In summary, our sensor system represents a significant advancement in the rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of the clinically crucial bioanalyte creatinine, offering potential benefits for the early diagnosis and management of kidney disorders.

Imprinting Technology for Effective Sorbent Fabrication: Current State-of-Art and Future Prospects

In the last 10 years, we have witnessed an extensive development of instrumental techniques in analytical methods for determination of various molecules and ions at very low concentrations. Nevertheless, the presence of interfering components of complex samples hampered the applicability of new analytical strategies. Thus, additional sample pre-treatment steps were proposed to overcome the problem. Solid sorbents were used for clean-up samples but insufficient selectivity of commercial materials limited their utility. Here, the application of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) or ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) in the separation processes have recently attracted attention due to their many advantages, such as high selectivity, robustness, and low costs of the fabrication process. Bulk or monoliths, microspheres and core-shell materials, magnetically susceptible and stir-bar imprinted materials are applicable to different modes of solid-phase extraction to determine target analytes and ions in a very complex environment such as blood, urine, soil, or food. The capability to perform a specific separation of enantiomers is a substantial advantage in clinical analysis. The ion-imprinted sorbents gained interest in trace analysis of pollutants in environmental samples. In this review, the current synthetic approaches for the preparation of MIPs and IIPs are comprehensively discussed together with a detailed characterization of respective materials. Furthermore, the use of sorbents in environmental, food, and biomedical analyses will be emphasized to point out current limits and highlight the future prospects for further development in the field.

Molecularly imprinted polymers as selective adsorbents for ambient plasma mass spectrometry

The application of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as molecular scavengers for ambient plasma ionization mass spectrometry has been reported for the first time. MIPs were synthesized using methacrylic acid as functional monomer; nicotine, propyphenazone, or methylparaben as templates; ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker; and 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile as polymerization initiator. To perform ambient plasma ionization experiments, a setup consisting of the heated crucible, a flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (FAPA) plasma ion source, and a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer has been used. The heated crucible with programmable temperature allows for desorption of the analytes from MIPs structure which results in their direct introduction into the ion stream. Limits of detection, linearity of the proposed analytical procedure, and selectivities have been determined for three analytes: nicotine, propyphenazone, and methylparaben. The analytes used were chosen from various classes of organic compounds to show the feasibility of the analytical procedure. The limits of detections (LODs) were 10 nM, 10, and 0.5 μM for nicotine, propyphenazone, and methylparaben, respectively. In comparison with the measurements performed for the non-imprinted polymers, the values of LODs were improved for at least one order of magnitude due to preconcentration of the sample and reduction of background noise, contributing to signal suppression. The described procedure has shown linearity in a broad range of concentrations. The overall time of single analysis is short and requires ca. 5 min. The developed technique was applied for the determination of nicotine, propyphenazone, and methylparaben in spiked real-life samples, with recovery of 94.6–98.4%. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive, and accurate which provides a new option for the detection of small organic compounds in various samples.
