An N,N'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium-modified titanium-dioxide photocatalyst for water remediation--observation and application of supramolecular effects in photocatalytic degradation of pi-donor organic compounds

Photocatalytic Activity of Structured Mesoporous TiO2 Materials

Starting from colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles in combination with tetraethyl orthosilicate using neutral Pluronic or cationic cetyltrimethylammonium as templates, a series of structured mesoporous silicas has been obtained. The structure of the mesoporous titania was confirmed by isothermal gas adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The pore diameter ranged between 3.8 and 10.9 nm, and the BET surface area varied from 99 to 584 m2 g(-1). The photocatalytic activity of these samples for the degradation of phenol in aqueous solution has been compared with that of standard P-25 TiO2. Even though the activity of these new mesostructured materials is lower that those found for P-25 TiO2, the turnover frequency of the photocatalytic activity (moles of phenol degraded per Ti atom present at initial reaction time) is much higher for the mesoporous titania, particularly with low titanium contents for those materials (mpTiO2-5 and TiO2SBA15-5).

Photocatalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol on nanometer size titanium dioxide surface modified with 5-sulfosalicylic acid

The surface of nanometer size TiO(2) was simply and fast modified by chemical adsorption in saturated solution of 5-sulfosalicylic acid. After surface modification, a stable, yellow surface complex was formed quickly, the wavelength response range of TiO(2) was expanded, it has obvious absorption in the region from 320 to 450 nm; the adsorption efficiency of p-nitrophenol (PNP) by TiO(2) was enhanced from 42% to 84%. The photocatalytic activity was tested on the degradation of PNP. The influences of catalyst and its dosage, pH value, and PNP concentration on the degradation were investigated. On optimal photodegradation conditions, including initial pH 4.0, PNP 5 mg l(-1), catalyst 100 mg, irradiation time 120 min with 160 W high-pressure mercury lamp, the degradation efficiency of PNP was increased from 40% to 88% after surface modification. Surface modification led not only to an increase in the light utilization, but also improved the surface coverage of PNP in comparison with the pure TiO(2). Both of these factors are crucial for the photocatalytic activity of heterogeneous photocatalysis, especially for photodegradation of benzenoid pollutants.

Ruthenium(II)-tris-bipyridine/titanium dioxide codoped zeolite Y photocatalysts: II. Photocatalyzed degradation of the model pollutant 2,4-xylidine, evidence for percolation behavior

A considerably arduous test of a novel class of composite materials consisting of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and TiO2 codoped zeolites Y is presented here. The [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and TiO2 codoped zeolites Y served as photocatalysts in the oxidation of the model compounds 2,4-dimethylaniline (2,4-xylidine) by H2O2 in an acidic aqueous medium. Zeolite-embedded TiO2 (nano)particles play an important role in the degradation mechanism. The first step in this complex mechanism is the photoelectron transfer from photoexcited [Ru(bpy)3]2+*, located inside the supercage of zeolite Y, to a neighboring TiO2 nanoparticle. During this electron transfer process, electron injection into the conduction band of TiO2 is achieved. The second decisive step is the reaction of this electron with H2O2, which was previously chemisorbed at the surface-region of the TiO2 nanoparticles. In this reaction, a TiO2 bound hydroxyl radical (TiO2-HO.) is created. This highly reactive intermediate initiates then the oxidation of 2,4-xylidine, which enters the zeolites framework in its protonated form (Hxyl+). The formation of 2,4-dimethylphenol as first detectable reaction product indicated that this oxidation proceeds via an electron transfer mechanism. Furthermore, [Ru(bpy)3]3+, which was created in the initiating photoelectron transfer reaction between [Ru(bpy)3]2+* and TiO2, also takes place in the oxidation of Hxyl+. [Ru(bpy)3]2+ is recycled in that reaction, which also belongs to the group of electron transfer reactions. In addition to the primary steps of this particular Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), the dependence of the efficiency of the 2,4-xylidine degradation as a function of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and TiO2 loadings of the zeolite Y framework is also reported here. The quenching of [Ru(bpy)3]2+* by H2O2 as well as the photocatalytic activity of the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and TiO2 codoped zeolite Y catalysts both follow a distinct percolation behavior in dependence of their TiO2 content.
