Fullerene C60 in Atmospheric Aerosol and Its Relationship to Combustion Processes

Single-photon oxidation of C60 by self-sensitized singlet oxygen

C₆₀ is regarded as the most efficient singlet oxygen (¹O₂) photosensitizer. Yet, its oxidation by self-sensitized ¹O₂ remains unclear. The literature hints both oxygen and C₆₀ must be at excited states to react, implying a two-photon process: first, oxygen is photosensitized (¹C₆₀•¹O₂); second, C₆₀ is photoexcited (¹[Formula: see text]•¹O₂). However, this scheme is not plausible in a solvent, which would quench ¹O₂ rapidly before the second photon is absorbed. Here, we uncover a single-photon oxidation mechanism via self-sensitized ¹O₂ in solvents above an excitation energy of 3.7 eV. Using excitation spectroscopies and kinetics analysis, we deduce photoexcitation of a higher energy transient, ³[Formula: see text]•³O₂, converting to ¹[Formula: see text]•¹O₂. Such triplet-triplet annihilation, yielding two simultaneously-excited singlets, is unique. Additionally, rate constants derived from this study allow us to predict a C₆₀ half-life of about a minute in the atmosphere, possibly explaining the scarceness of C₆₀ in the environment.

Real-Time Measurement of Airborne Carbon Nanotubes in Workplace Atmospheres

With growing applications of carbon nanomaterials, there is a concern over health risks presented by inhalation of carbon nanotube (CNT) aerosol in workplace atmospheres. Current methods used for CNT aerosol measurement lack selectivity to specific form of carbonaceous component or allotrope of interest. Moreover, the detection limits of these methods are also inadequate for short-term monitoring. Here, we describe, for the first time, a near real-time, field-portable instrument for selective quantification of airborne CNT concentration. The approach uses an automated cyclical scheme involving collect-analyze-ablate steps to obtain continuous near real-time measurement using Raman spectroscopy. The method achieves significantly lower detection limits by employing corona-assisted particle microconcentration for efficient coupling with laser Raman spectroscopy. A combination of techniques involving (i) use of characteristic Raman peaks, (ii) distinct ratio of disordered and graphitic peaks, and (iii) principal component classification and regression is employed to identify and quantify the specific form of the aerosolized carbonaceous nanomaterial. We show that the approach is capable of selectively quantifying trace single-walled CNT in the presence of interfering agents such as diesel particulate matter. The detection limit of the method for the single-walled CNT studied in this work was 60 ng m^-3, corresponding to a 10 min aerosol collection period, which is significantly lower than that for the NIOSH Method 5040 (∼0.15 μg m^-3 for an 8-h collection on a 25 mm filter at 4 L min^-1), a commonly used method for elemental carbon. We demonstrate the automated real-time capability of this field-portable method by continuously measuring a transient single-walled CNT aerosol.

Cytogenotoxic effects of fullerene C60 in the freshwater teleostean fish, Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792)

In recent years, carbon nanomaterials, including fullerene C₆₀ is regarded as the building block in nanotechnology because of its widespread use in medicine, industry, cosmetics and commercial products. Despite the special properties, several reports have raised public health concerns due to the unknown and practically unexplored toxic effects of nanomaterials. However, there have been relatively few studies regarding the genotoxic responses of fullerene C₆₀in vivo. Genotoxic effects of DMSO-solublized C₆₀ nanomaterial suspension at sublethal concentrations (5 and 10 mg/L) were investigated on adult freshwater fish, Anabas testudineus using micronucleus and comet assays. An assessment of micronucleus induction showed severe cytoplasmic and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes, gill and liver cells. Abnormalities in cytoplasm were identified as formation of sticky cells, vacuolated cytoplasm, cytoplasmic degeneration, echinocyte, acanthocyte, anisochromatic cells and abnormal erythrocyte membrane. The nuclear abnormalities included micronucleus, binucleated cells, nuclear buds, irregular nucleus, vacuolated, notched and serrated nucleus in the erythrocytes compared to the control groups. Similarly, significant increase (P < 0.05) in micronucleus frequencies were observed in gill and liver cells. The high frequency of micronucleus was observed in the gill cells followed by liver and erythrocytes, respectively, at both sublethal concentrations, and the severity was duration and concentration-dependent. In comet assay, significant increase (P < 0.05) in DNA damage was observed using the comet parameter, percent tail DNA. The highest level of comet damage with grade 3 was observed in blood, gill and liver cells on increase in duration and concentration when compared to the respective control groups. Thus the results revealed that fullerene C₆₀ nanomaterials may pose risk to aquatic organisms, especially fish, by the induction of genotoxicity. Further studies are warranted to provide new insights on the mechanisms and consequences of C₆₀ nanomaterials interactions with biological membranes.
