Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate whether ex-vivo MRI enables accurate estimation of the invasive component of lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 32 patients with lung adenocarcinoma who underwent lung lobectomy. The specimens underwent MRI at 1.5T. The boundary between the lesion and the normal lung was evaluated on a 5-point scale in each three MRI sequences, and a one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc tests were performed. The invasive component size was measured histopathologically. The maximum diameter of each solid component measured on CT and MR T1-weighted (T1W) images and the maximum size obtained from histopathologic images were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Inter-reader agreement was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). RESULTS T1W images were determined to be optimal for the delineation of the lesions (P < 0.001). The histopathologic invasive area corresponded to the area where the T1W ex-vivo MR image showed a high signal intensity that was almost equal to the intravascular blood signal. The maximum diameter of the solid component on CT was overestimated compared with the maximum invasive size on histopathology (mean, 153%; P < 0.05), while that on MRI was evaluated mostly accurately without overestimation (mean, 108%; P = 0.48). The interobserver reliability of the measurements using CT and MRI was good (ICC = 0.71 on CT, 0.74 on MRI). CONCLUSION Ex-vivo MRI was more accurate than conventional CT in delineating the invasive component of lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
MRI is routinely used for rectal cancer staging to evaluate tumor extent and to inform decision-making regarding surgical planning and the need for neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy. Extramural venous invasion (EMVI), which is intravenous tumor extension beyond the rectal wall on histopathology, is a predictor for worse prognosis. T2-weighted images (T2WI) demonstrate EMVI as a nodular-, bead-, or worm-shaped structure of intermediate T2 signal with irregular margins that arises from the primary tumor. Correlative diffusion-weighted images demonstrate intermediate to high signal corresponding to EMVI, and contrast enhanced T1-weighted images demonstrate tumor signal intensity in or around vessels. Diffusion-weighted and post contrast images may increase diagnostic performance but decrease inter-observer agreement. CT may also demonstrate obvious EMVI and is potentially useful in patients with a contraindication for MRI. This article aims to review the spectrum of imaging findings of EMVI of rectal cancer on MRI and CT, to summarize the diagnostic accuracy and inter-observer agreement of imaging modalities for its presence, to review other rectal neoplasms that may cause EMVI, and to discuss the clinical significance and role of MRI-detected EMVI in staging and restaging clinical scenarios.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal tract lesions are major causes of acute abdominal pain. A rapid, accurate, and reliable diagnosis is required to manage patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a nonionizing modality that is beneficial for pregnant women, children, and young adults who are sensitive to ionizing radiation. For patients with renal impairment who are not accurately diagnosed with noncontrast computed tomography, noncontrast MRI can serve as an alternative diagnostic modality. MRI protocols used for acute abdominal pain are supposed to be optimized and prioritized to shorten scanning times. Single-shot T2-weighted and fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging are important pulse sequences that are used to reveal pathology and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Diffusion-weighted imaging clearly depicts inflammation and abscesses as hyperintense lesions. Most acute gastrointestinal tract lesions, including inflammation, ischemia, obstruction, and perforation, demonstrate bowel wall thickening. Bowel obstruction and adynamic ileus present bowel dilatation, and perforation and penetration show bowel wall defects. MRI can be used to reveal these pathological findings with some characteristics depending on their underlying pathophysiology. This review article discusses imaging modalities for acute abdominal pain, describes a noncontrast MRI protocol for acute abdominal pain caused by gastrointestinal tract lesions, and reviews MRI findings of acute gastrointestinal tract lesions.
