Parasites, mate attractiveness and female feather corticosterone levels in a socially monogamous bird

Ornaments indicate parasite load only if they are dynamic or parasites are contagious

Choosing to mate with an infected partner has several potential fitness costs, including disease transmission and infection-induced reductions in fecundity and parental care. By instead choosing a mate with no, or few, parasites, animals avoid these costs and may also obtain resistance genes for offspring. Within a population, then, the quality of sexually selected ornaments on which mate choice is based should correlate negatively with the number of parasites with which a host is infected ("parasite load"). However, the hundreds of tests of this prediction yield positive, negative, or no correlation between parasite load and ornament quality. Here, we use phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis of 424 correlations from 142 studies on a wide range of host and parasite taxa to evaluate explanations for this ambiguity. We found that ornament quality is weakly negatively correlated with parasite load overall, but the relationship is more strongly negative among ornaments that can dynamically change in quality, such as behavioral displays and skin pigmentation, and thus can accurately reflect current parasite load. The relationship was also more strongly negative among parasites that can transmit during sex. Thus, the direct benefit of avoiding parasite transmission may be a key driver of parasite-mediated sexual selection. No other moderators, including methodological details and whether males exhibit parental care, explained the substantial heterogeneity in our data set. We hope to stimulate research that more inclusively considers the many and varied ways in which parasites, sexual selection, and epidemiology intersect.

Cooling increases corticosterone deposition in feathers of eastern bluebird chicks

Exposure to noxious stimuli early in life can both activate and shape the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in birds and other vertebrates, with the potential for lifelong consequences. Studies assessing early HPA axis activation often rely on collection of blood samples to evaluate circulating glucocorticoid levels. However, blood sampling in small altricial young is invasive, limited by animal size, and not sufficient to provide detailed information about hormone exposure over protracted periods of time. We tested the use of feather corticosterone as an alternative method to assess HPA axis activity early in life in free-living, altricial chicks, for whom timing of growth of first feathers coincides with a period of rapid growth, development of the HPA axis, and reliance on parental care. We investigated (1) whether ecologically relevant bouts of experimental cooling prior to the onset of homeothermy-conditions known to elevate circulating corticosterone-are reflected in changes of feather corticosterone deposition in Eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) chicks, and (2) whether such changes occurred in a sex-dependent manner. We found that cooling during the first week of life resulted in elevated feather corticosterone in first-grown feathers of experimentally cooled chicks relative to controls. The timing of deposition of corticosterone in feathers in response to temperature treatments was delayed in females compared to males. Results indicate that the hormone deposition in feather tissues of altricial nestlings reflects exposure to environmental stimuli, and can thus provide a minimally invasive tool for assessing HPA activity in early life. The development of the HPA axis, or its activation in response to environmental stimuli early in life, may also occur in a sex-dependent manner in altricial birds.

The Adaptive Sex in Stressful Environments

The impact of early stress on juvenile development has intrigued scientists for decades, but the adaptive significance of such effects remains an ongoing debate. This debate has largely ignored some characteristics of the offspring, such as their sex, despite strong evolutionary and demographic implications of sex-ratio variation. We review recent studies that examine associations between glucocorticoids (GCs), the main class of stress hormones, and offspring sex. Whereas exposure to GCs at around the time of sex determination in fish consistently produces males, the extent and direction of sex-ratio bias in response to stress vary in reptiles, birds, and mammals. We propose proximate and ultimate explanations for most of these trends.
