Abstract
The effects of radiotherapy on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) still remain to be further proved. The dose of radiotherapy is generally 2Gy*25f. In the current study, we prospectively investigated the clinical outcomes of advanced or recurrent HCC patients who received hypofractionated radiotherapy at a dose of 5Gy*10f with tomotherapy. A study involving hypofractionated radiotherapy (5Gy*10f) based on TOMO was conducted in HCC patients with Child-Pugh grade A or B who were unsuitable candidates for resection or radiofrequency ablation or with residual disease after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The prescription dose was 50 grays in 10 fractions. From Sep. 2016 and Dec. 2017, 65 patents were evaluated with a median follow-up of 24 months (range: 7–41 months). 10 patients were treatment-naïve (failure to undergo surgery or intervention due to the presence of a portal or portal branch tumor thrombus), 15 patients were treated for residual HCC after TACE as salvage therapy, and 40 cases were treated for recurrent HCC. The median overalls survival (OS) of these patients was 18 months. Among them, 27 patients classified as BCLC stage B had a median OS of 22 months. Moreover, 28 patients classified as BCLC stage C had a median OS of 14 months. None of the patients experienced recurrence in the area of radiotherapy. The local control rate of primary tumor at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 2 years was 100%. The 3-month survival rate was 100%, the 6-month survival rate was 100%, the 1-year survival rate was 75.4%, and the 2-year survival rate was 43%. In addition, 14 patients had the opportunity to continue the treatment of PD-1 antibody after the disease progression, and their prognosis was not surprisingly better compared with the patients who did not receive PD-1 antibody treatment (NR vs. 15 months, P=0.04). No serious side effect was found in all patients during and after radiotherapy. Hypofractionated radiotherapy (5Gy*10f) based on TOMO achieved high local control rate and OS with tolerable toxicities for HCC patients. TOMO therapy could be used to effectively against HCC in treatment-naive, intrahepatic failure, residual disease, and recurrent settings.

Abstract
Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is widely accepted as a treatment for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the intermediate stage according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) guidelines. Recently, balloon-occluded TACE (B-TACE) was developed in Japan. Despite the lack of a clear definition, B-TACE is generally defined as the infusion of emulsion of chemotherapeutic agents with lipiodol followed by gelatin particles under the occlusion of feeding arteries by a microballoon catheter, which leads to the dense lipiodol emulsion (LE) accumulation in HCC nodules. This phenomenon cannot be explained only by the prevention of proximal migration and leakage of embolization materials; it further involves causing local changes in the hemodynamics of the surrounding occlusion artery and targeted HCC nodules. Balloon-occluded arterial stump pressure plays an important role in the dense LE accumulation in targeted HCC nodules. Although randomized controlled trials comparing the therapeutic effect and the prognosis of B-TACE to those of the other TACE procedures, such as conventional-TACE and drug-eluting beads TACE, are still lacking, B-TACE is thought to be a promising treatment. The purpose of this review is to summarize the mechanism, therapeutic effect, indication, prognosis and complications of B-TACE.

Abstract
PURPOSE The impact of transarterial chemoembolization after initiation of sorafenib (SOR) has not been prospectively compared with SOR alone in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The objective of this study was to assess whether SOR + transarterial chemoembolization provides benefit over SOR alone in this setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study with propensity matching using data from patients prescribed SOR for HCC at Veterans Health Administration hospitals from 2007 to 2015. The primary outcome was overall survival from the time of SOR prescription and stratified by receipt of transarterial chemoembolization within 90 days of SOR initiation. RESULTS A total of 4,896 patients received SOR for HCC, of whom 232 (4.7%) underwent transarterial chemoembolization within 90 days. Patients receiving transarterial chemoembolization + SOR were highly selected, being younger and with less significant hepatic dysfunction, earlier Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage (P < .0001), and fewer tumors with lower rates of macrovascular invasion (MVI) and metastases (all P < .0001) than SOR-alone patients. In unadjusted analysis, SOR + transarterial chemoembolization was associated with reduced mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 0.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.53-0.71; P < .0001). After propensity matching, SOR + transarterial chemoembolization continued to show significant associations with reduced mortality with HR 0.75 (95% CI 0.62-0.92; P = .0005). Subgroup analysis suggests that the addition of transarterial chemoembolization to SOR improves outcomes in most patients, particularly those with Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score <15, platelets >50,000/μL, and >3 tumors with or without macrovascular invasion, without local invasion or metastases. CONCLUSIONS Patients with unresectable HCC started on systemic therapy with SOR appear to benefit from adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization. Optimal application of multimodal therapy in this setting should be prospectively investigated.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the factors predicting overall response and overall survival in hepatocellular carcinoma patients undergoing balloon-occluded transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (B-TACE). METHODS Sixty-six patients treated with B-TACE at a Japanese tertiary referral hospital between January 2011 and August 2015 were included in this retrospective cohort study. RESULTS The overall response was classified as complete response, partial response, stable disease, and progressive disease in 35 (53.0%), 7 (10.6%), 13 (19.7%), and 11 (16.7%) patients, respectively. The response rate was 63.6%, and the disease control rate was 83.3%. The number of tumors (hazard ratio [HR], 4.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.26-15.7; P = 0.021) and α-fetoprotein level (HR, 11.40; 95% CI, 2.75-46.9; P < 0.001) were significantly associated with the tumor response in a multivariate analysis. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 76.8% (95% CI, 64.5-85.3%), 57.3% (95% CI, 42.3-69.7%), and 46.7% (95% CI, 30.7-61.2%), respectively. The median survival time was 902 days. Albumin (≥3.4 g/dL) (HR, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.12-0.63; P = 0.002) and overall response (complete response and partial response) (HR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.16-0.71; P = 0.004) were factors significantly associated with overall survival in a multivariate analysis. No mortalities were observed, but biloma requiring percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage occurred in one patient (1.5%). CONCLUSION Balloon-occluded transcatheter arterial chemoembolization may exert a good antitumor effect and result in good overall survival in select hepatocellular carcinoma patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with stepwise dose escalation and hypofractionation in 2 combined prospective trials. METHODS Sequential phase 1/2 (protocol 9603) and phase 2 (protocol 0004) trials were conducted for patients with histologically proven HCC. The phase 1 component of protocol 9603 was a dose-escalation study; CIRT was delivered in 12, 8, or 4 fractions. After determination of the recommended dose, 2 phase 2 trials were performed in an expanded cohort, and the data were pooled to analyze toxicity, local control, and overall survival. RESULTS In the phase 1 component of protocol 9603, 69.6, 58.0, and 52.8 Gy (relative biological effectiveness [RBE]) in 12, 8, and 4 fractions, respectively, constituted the maximum tolerated doses, and 52.8 Gy (RBE) in 4 fractions was established as the recommended dose regimen for the 2 phase 2 studies. In 124 patients with a total of 133 lesions, few severe adverse effects occurred, and local-control and overall survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 94.7% and 90.3%, 91.4% and 50.0%, and 90.0% and 25.0%, respectively; this included 1-, 3-, and 5-year local-control rates of 97.8%, 95.5%, and 91.6%, respectively, in the phase 2 study. In a multivariate analysis, Child-Pugh class B and the presence of a tumor thrombus were significant factors for mortality. CONCLUSIONS The safety and efficacy of CIRT in 12, 8, and 4 fractions were confirmed, with 52.8 Gy (RBE) in 4 fractions established as the recommended treatment course for eligible HCC patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND Curative treatment options for patients with early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) include resection, liver transplantation, and percutaneous ablation therapy. However, even patients with solitary HCC are not always amenable to these treatments. The authors prospectively investigated the clinical outcomes of patients who received stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for solitary HCC. METHODS A phase 2 study involving SBRT and optional transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) was conducted in patients with Child-Pugh grade A or B and underlying, solitary HCC (greatest tumor dimension, ≤4 cm) who were unsuitable candidates for resection and radiofrequency ablation. The prescription dose was 35 to 40 grays in 5 fractions. The primary endpoint was 3-year local tumor control. RESULTS From 2007 to 2012, 101 patients were enrolled, and 90 were evaluable with a median follow-up of 41.7 months (range, 6.8-96.2 months). Thirty-two patients were treatment-naïve, 20 were treated for newly diagnosed intrahepatic failure, and 38 were treated for residual or recurrent HCC as salvage therapy. Thirty-two patients did not receive TACE, 48 received insufficient TACE, and 10 attained full lipiodol accumulation. The 3-year local control rate was 96.3%, the 3-year liver-related cause-specific survival rate was 72.5%, and the overall survival rate was 66.7%. Grade 3 laboratory abnormalities were observed in 6 patients, and 8 patients had Child-Pugh scores that worsened by 2 points. CONCLUSIONS SBRT achieved high local control and overall survival with feasible toxicities for patients with solitary HCC, despite rather stringent conditions. SBRT can be effective against solitary HCC in treatment-naive, intrahepatic failure, residual disease, and recurrent settings, taking advantage of its distinctive characteristics. Abstract
This review discusses the current data on Hepasphere™ in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. HepaSphere is a drug-loadable microsphere that can be bound with doxorubicin, epirubicin, cisplatin or oxaliplatin. In vitro and in vivo studies confirm lower systemic exposure to the drug and fewer systemic doxorubicin-related side effects. Studies suggest that this technique is better tolerated than conventional lipiodol-based chemoembolization (c-TACE). In intermediate and early stage hepatocellular carcinoma - nonresponsive to curative treatments - complete response and partial response rates range from 22.2 to 48% and 43.7 to 51%, respectively. Studies with survival as an end-point are needed and head-to-head comparisons with other drug-eluting beads are necessary.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the safety and efficacy of yttrium-90 ((90)Y) radioembolization when performed in a superselective fashion for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 20 patients with unresectable HCC. Median Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score was 10.5 (range, 6-25), with 8 of 20 patients (40%) classified Child-Pugh class B and 1 of 20 patients (5%) classified class C cirrhosis. Segmental tumor-associated portal vein thrombus was present in 12 patients (60%), and a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt was present in 4 patients (20%). Median tumor diameter was 3.9 cm (range, 2.5-7.1 cm). All patients underwent superselective (90)Y radioembolization targeted to a single liver segment using glass microspheres. RESULTS Median dose to the treated segment was 254 Gy, and median dose to the tumor was 536 Gy. No grade 3-4 hepatotoxicity occurred. The most common clinical toxicities were fatigue (30%), abdominal pain (10%), and postembolization syndrome (10%). Follow-up imaging demonstrated complete European Association for the Study of the Liver response of the index tumor in 19 of 20 patients (95%) and stable disease in 1 of 20 patients (5%). In patients with complete response, local tumor recurrence rate was 5.3% (1 of 19 patients). Median time to progression was 319 days. Overall survival was 90% (18 of 20 patients) with a median follow-up period of 275 days (range, 32-677 d). CONCLUSIONS When performed in a segmental fashion, (90)Y radioembolization demonstrates high response rates and low local tumor recurrence rates. Complete imaging response can be achieved in patients with locally aggressive disease. This study demonstrates no clinically significant hepatotoxicity, despite moderate liver dysfunction in many patients.

Abstract
AIM In this study, we analyzed the rates and patterns of recurrences in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who had achieved complete remission (CR) by transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and also examined the differences of recurrence patterns between TACE-treated and RFA-treated groups. METHODS We followed 309 consecutive HCC patients who achieved CR following TACE (n = 220) or RFA (n = 89) for a median of 68 months. Recurrence patterns were classified as local recurrence and secondary tumor according to location of recurrence (≤2 cm and >2 cm from primary tumor). RESULTS Recurred HCC had been found in 231 out of 309 patients (75%) with CR by TACE or RFA; 112 local recurrences (48%), 100 secondary tumor (43%) and 19 both (9%). The cumulative recurrence rates at 1, 3 and 5 years were 22%, 64% and 79%, respectively. The overall recurrences at 1, 3 and 5 years following CR in the TACE-treated group was not different from those in the RFA-treated group (21%, 68% and 81% vs 26%, 56% and 84%, respectively; P = NS) However, the cumulative occurrence rates of local recurrence rates at 1, 3 and 5 years were significantly higher in the TACE-treated group compared to the RFA-treated group (15%, 53% and 65% vs 15%, 27% and 34%, respectively; P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Recurrence of HCC is very common, even following CR by TACE or RFA. Especially, local recurrences are very frequent in cases who achieved CR by TACE, which suggests that additional ablation therapy may be beneficial to prevent recurrences following CR by TACE.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the per-nodule efficacy of superselective transarterial chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS From 2006-2009, 271 cirrhotic patients with 635 nodules underwent a first superselective transarterial chemoembolization, repeated "on demand" after local recurrences (LR) or partial responses (PR). Complete response (CR), time to nodule progression (TTnP), and local recurrence rate (LRR), according to three size classes (≤ 2 cm, 2.1-5 cm, and>5 cm) were evaluated. RESULTS After the first superselective transarterial chemoembolization, the CR was 64%, sustained over time in 77%, higher in small (68%) and intermediate-size (64%) nodules than in large nodules (25%; P<.001). The LRR was 23%:20% in small, 27% in intermediate, and 67% in large HCCs (P<.05). The median TTnP of large HCCs was 4 months versus 7-9 months for small and intermediate HCCs. The second superselective transarterial chemoembolization achieved a higher CR (63% in LR, 52% in PR) than the third superselective transarterial chemoembolization (32%). Median TTnP after the second superselective transarterial chemoembolization for LR and PR (8 months and 6 months) was longer than after the third superselective transarterial chemoembolization (3.5 months). Nodules ≤ 5 cm had a CR after the first superselective transarterial chemoembolization (66%) and the second superselective transarterial chemoembolization for LR (64%) or PR (55%) higher than after the third superselective transarterial chemoembolization (40%); nodules>5 cm had a CR of 25% after the first superselective transarterial chemoembolization, LR of 50% and PR of 25%, and after the second and third superselective transarterial chemoembolizations, PR of 0%. CONCLUSIONS Effectiveness of superselective transarterial chemoembolization has a clear cutoff above and below 5-cm nodules, with better results in smaller nodules. In HCCs ≤ 5 cm, the efficacy of the first and second superselective transarterial chemoembolizations performed for LR was higher than the second superselective transarterial chemoembolization for PR and the third superselective transarterial chemoembolization. For HCCs>5 cm, retreatment of PR is of little value, and the third cycle is ineffective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been widely performed for inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Super-selective TACE is preferable to non-selective therapy and it is important to advance the catheter tip as close to the tumor as possible in the feeding artery. A new microcatheter with a 1.9-Fr non-tapered tip has recently become available and this new microcatheter can be inserted into a 2.7-Fr. microcatheter. It is called the triple co-axial (triaxial) system. PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical usefulness of super-selective TACE for HCC using the triaxial system. MATERIAL AND METHODS We evaluated 63 HCCs that underwent super-selective TACE. Requirements for inclusion in this study were: (a) HCCs 3 cm or less in diameter; (b) TACE performed by a single operator; and (c) no additional treatment in the absence of local progression. All patients were followed for more than 1 year after TACE. The median follow-up period for surviving patients was 20 months (range, 17-31 months). The conventional system was used in 35 HCCs (control group), and the triaxial system was used in 28 (triaxial group). We reviewed angiographies at TACE and follow-up CT, and then evaluated local tumor status in the two groups. RESULTS Local tumor control rates at 3, 6, and 18 months were 64%, 36%, and 29%, respectively, in the triaxial group, and 40%, 14%, and 8.6%, respectively, in the control group (P = 0.0086). There were no major complications in either group. CONCLUSION The triaxial system appears to be useful for super-selective TACE and may contribute to achieving higher local control rates for HCC.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to report on the 5-year survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients treated with DC Bead loaded with doxorubicin (DEB-DOX) in a scheduled scheme in up to three treatments and thereafter on demand. MATERIALS AND METHODS 173 HCC patients not suitable for curable treatments were prospectively enrolled (mean age 70.4 ± 7.4 years). Child-Pugh (Child) class was A/B (102/71 [59/41 %]), Okuda stage was 0/1/2 (91/61/19 [53.2/35.7/11.1 %]), and mean lesion diameter was 7.6 ± 2.1 cm. Lesion morphology was one dominant ≤5 cm (22 %), one dominant >5 cm (41.6 %), multifocal ≤5 (26 %), and multifocal >5 (10.4 %). RESULTS Overall survival at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years was 93.6, 83.8, 62, 41.04, and 22.5 %, with higher rates achieved in Child class A compared with Child class B patients (95, 88.2, 61.7, 45, and 29.4 % vs. 91.5, 75, 50.7, 35.2, and 12.8 %). Mean overall survival was 43.8 months (range 1.2-64.8). Cumulative survival was better for Child class A compared with Child class B patients (p = 0.029). For patients with dominant lesions ≤5 cm 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-year survival rates were 100, 95.2, 71.4, 66.6, and 47.6 % for Child class A and 94.1, 88.2, 58.8, 41.2, 29.4, and 23.5 % for Child class B patients. Regarding DEB-DOX treatment, multivariate analysis identified number of lesions (p = 0.033), lesion vascularity (p < 0.0001), initially achieved complete response (p < 0.0001), and objective response (p = 0.046) as significant and independent determinants of 5-year survival. CONCLUSION DEB-DOX results, with high rates of 5-year survival for patients, not amenable to curative treatments. Number of lesions, lesion vascularity, and local response were significant independent determinants of 5-year survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of prognostic variables in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is controversial. AIMS To evaluate the survival of patients with HCC on cirrhosis treated with TACE and to analyse the prognostic factors affecting survival. METHODS From 1996 to 2006, 580 consecutive patients with HCC in cirrhosis were observed. Of these 194 patients underwent TACE. The primary end-point was survival. Independent predictors of survival were identified using the Cox model. RESULTS The cumulative 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates were 96%, 60%, and 41%, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed significant reduction of survival among patients with serum bilirubin values >2mg/dl compared to patients with values <2mg/dl (Hazard ratio 3.84; CI 95% 1.70-8.66; p-value=0.001). Multivariate analysis performed in the group of patients treated with TACE alone showed that elevated serum bilirubin (Hazard ratio 2.96; CI 95% 1.20-7.3; p-value 0.02) and incomplete tumour response (Hazard ratio 2.88; CI 95% 1.18-7.05; p-value 0.02) are correlated with a worse outcome. CONCLUSIONS TACE was well tolerated and overall survival rate was 41% after 5 years. Complete tumour response and serum bilirubin <2mg/dl were identified as predictors of survival.

Abstract
To prepare a soluble gelatin sponge (GS) and to explore the GS particles (GSPs) that inhibit development of collateral pathways when transcatheter hepatic arterial embolization is performed. The approval of the Institutional Committee on Research Animal Care of our institution was obtained. By means of 50 and 100 kDa of regenerative medicine-gelatin (RM-G), RM-G sponges were prepared by freeze-drying and heating to temperatures of 110-150°C for cross-linkage. The soluble times of RM-GSPs were measured in vitro. Eight swine for transcatheter hepatic arterial embolization were assigned into two groups: six received 135°C/50RM-GSPs, 125°C/100RM-GSPs, and 138°C/50RM-GSPs, with soluble time of 48 h or more in vitro; two swine received Gelpart GSPs (G-GSPs) with insoluble time of 14 days as a control. Transarterial chemoembolization was performed on two branches of the hepatic artery per swine. RM-GSPs heated at temperatures of 110-138°C were soluble. Mean soluble times of the RM-GSPs increased with higher temperature. Hepatic branches embolized with G-GSP remained occluded after 6 days, and development of collateral pathways was observed after 3 days. Hepatic branches embolized with 135°C/50RM-GSP and 125°C/100RM-GSP remained occluded for 4 h, and recanalization was observed after 1 day. Hepatic branches embolized with 138°C/50RM-GS remained occluded for 1 day, and recanalization was observed after 2 days with no development of collateral pathways. In RM-GSs with various soluble times that were prepared by modulating the heating temperature, 138°C/50RM-GSP was the soluble GSP with the longest occlusion time without inducing development of collateral pathways.

Abstract
We evaluated the ability of one-month follow-up contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) with second-generation contrast agent in monitoring radio frequency ablation (RFA) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). One-hundred forty-eight HCCs were studied using CEUS: 110 nodules were treated with RFA [41/110 RFA were performed using a pretreatment and an immediate postablation evaluation using CEUS (group 1); 69/110 using only US guidance (group 2)] and 38 nodules treated with TACE. For statistical analysis, McNemar test was used. Overall complete response was observed in 107/148 nodules (92/110 treated with RFA and 15/38 with TACE). A better rate of complete response was found in group 1 compared to group 2 (92.7% vs. 78.3%). In RFA treatment, CEUS showed a sensitivity of 83.3% and a specificity of 100% (diagnostic accuracy of 97%) using MDCT as reference standard with no statistical difference (p > 0.05). CEUS detected all cases of incomplete response in HCC treated with TACE using angiography as reference standard (diagnostic accuracy 100%). We recommend assessing residual intratumoral flow on CEUS during RFA procedure to determine the necessity of immediate additional treatment. In case of positive CEUS results, HCC treated with TACE should be considered still viable.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the long-term results of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for the treatment of local recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after the first TACE. Between September 1992 and October 2004, 85 recurrent HCC nodules of 35 patients were treated by TACE. During the median follow-up period of 15.5 months (range 1.9-58.6 months), 58 of the 85 treated tumors developed local recurrence again after the second TACE. The overall 6-, 12-, and 36-month recurrence-free rates of these tumors after the second TACE were 47.0%, 36.2%, and 25.8%, respectively. Local recurrence of HCC after the first TACE was treated by a second TACE with equivalent efficacy as that of the initial TACE, if segmental chemoembolization was achieved. We regard TACE as the treatment of choice for the management of local recurrence of HCC.

Abstract
Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) improves survival in cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The optimal schedule, best anticancer agent and best technique are still unclear. TACE may not be better than transarterial embolization (TAE). HCC is very chemoresistant, thus embolization may be more important than chemotherapy. Lipiodol cannot be considered as an embolic agent and there are no data to show that it can release chemotherapeutic agents slowly. It can mask residual vascularity on CT imaging and its use is not recommended. Both TACE and TAE result in hypoxia, which stimulates angiogenesis, promoting tumor growth; thus combination of TACE with antiangiogenic agents may improve current results. To date, there is no evidence that TACE pre-liver transplantation or resection helps to expand current selection criteria for patients with HCC, nor results in less recurrence after surgery. Combination with other techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation and drugs, may enhance the effect of TACE. New trials are being conducted to clarify these issues.

Abstract
Multiple biomedical imaging techniques are used in all phases of cancer management. Imaging forms an essential part of cancer clinical protocols and is able to furnish morphological, structural, metabolic and functional information. Integration with other diagnostic tools such as in vitro tissue and fluids analysis assists in clinical decision-making. Hybrid imaging techniques are able to supply complementary information for improved staging and therapy planning. Image guided and targeted minimally invasive therapy has the promise to improve outcome and reduce collateral effects. Early detection of cancer through screening based on imaging is probably the major contributor to a reduction in mortality for certain cancers. Targeted imaging of receptors, gene therapy expression and cancer stem cells are research activities that will translate into clinical use in the next decade. Technological developments will increase imaging speed to match that of physiological processes. Targeted imaging and therapeutic agents will be developed in tandem through close collaboration between academia and biotechnology, information technology and pharmaceutical industries.
