A distributed lumped parameter model of blood flow with fluid-structure interaction

A distributed lumped parameter (DLP) model of blood flow was recently developed that can be simulated in minutes while still incorporating complex sources of energy dissipation in blood vessels. The aim of this work was to extend the previous DLP modeling framework to include fluid-structure interactions (DLP-FSI). This was done by using a simple compliance term to calculate pressure that does not increase the simulation complexity of the original DLP models. Verification and validation studies found DLP-FSI simulations had good agreement compared to analytical solutions of the wave equations, experimental measurements of pulsatile flow in elastic tubes, and in vivo MRI measurements of thoracic aortic flow. This new development of DLP-FSI allows for significantly improved computational efficiency of FSI simulations compared to FSI approaches that solve the full 3D conservation of mass and momentum equations while also including the complex sources of energy dissipation occurring in cardiovascular flows that other simplified models neglect.

Dynamic buckling of an inextensible elastic ring: Linear and nonlinear analyses

Slender elastic objects such as a column tend to buckle under loads. While static buckling is well understood as a bifurcation problem, the evolution of shapes during dynamic buckling is much harder to study. Elastic rings under normal pressure have emerged as a theoretical and experimental paradigm for the study of dynamic buckling with controlled loads. Experimentally, an elastic ring is placed within a soap film. When the film outside the ring is removed, surface tension pulls the ring inward, mimicking an external pressurization. Here we present a theoretical analysis of this process by performing a postbifurcation analysis of an elastic ring under pressure. This analysis allows us to understand how inertia, material properties, and loading affect the observed shape. In particular, we combine direct numerical solutions with a postbifurcation asymptotic analysis to show that inertia drives the system towards higher modes that cannot be selected in static buckling. Our theoretical results explain experimental observations that cannot be captured by a standard linear stability analysis.

Modeling hemodynamics in vascular networks using a geometrical multiscale approach: numerical aspects

On the one hand the heterogeneity of the circulatory system requires the use of different models in its different compartments, featuring different assumptions on the spatial degrees of freedom. On the other hand, the mutual interactions between its compartments imply that these models should preferably not be considered separately. These requirements have led to the concept of geometrical multiscale modeling, where the main idea is to couple 3D models with reduced 1D and/or 0D models. As such detailed information on the flow field in a specific region of interest can be obtained while accounting for the global circulation. However, the combination of models with different mathematical features gives rise to many difficulties such as the assignment of boundary conditions at the interface between two models and the development of robust coupling algorithms, as the subproblems are usually solved in a partitioned way. This review aims to give an overview of the most important aspects concerning 3D-1D-0D coupled models. In addition, some applications are presented in order to illustrate the potentialities of these coupled models.

Artery buckling: new phenotypes, models, and applications

Arteries are under significant mechanical loads from blood pressure, flow, tissue tethering, and body movement. It is critical that arteries remain patent and stable under these loads. This review summarizes the common forms of buckling that occur in blood vessels including cross-sectional collapse, longitudinal twist buckling, and bent buckling. The phenomena, model analyses, experimental measurements, effects on blood flow, and clinical relevance are discussed. It is concluded that mechanical buckling is an important issue for vasculature, in addition to wall stiffness and strength, and requires further studies to address the challenges. Studies of vessel buckling not only enrich vascular biomechanics but also have important clinical applications.
