Selective and sensitive detoxification of toxic lead ions from drinking water using lead (II) ion-imprinted interpenetrating polymer linkage

Molecularly imprinted polymers-ZnS quantum dots based composite sensor for optical detection of chlorogenic acid

Chlorogenic acid (CGA), a key phenolic acid found in coffee, fruits, vegetables, and herbs, has significant pharmacological activities, necessitating its accurate detection in complex matrices. In this study, an organic acrylate molecularly imprinted polymers-chitosan modified zinc sulphide quantum dots/polydopamine (MIPs-CS:ZnS QDs/PDA) based composite sensor for the detection of CGA has been designed. In MIPs shell, CGA served as template and 4-vinylpyridine and methacrylic acid as functional monomers, azobisisobutyronitrile acting as the initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker. Chitosan was incorporated to enhance the stability of ZnS QDs, while polydopamine was introduced during polymerization to improve adhesion and the selectivity of MIPs for CGA. Under ideal conditions, the composite sensor had shown a linear range of 0.02-11 μg/mL with detection limit of 8.9 × 10-3 μg/mL. The composite sensor showed imprinting factor of 6.3, and response time of 12 min. The sensor demonstrated good selectivity towards CGA, in the presence of interfering agents. Composite sensor was successfully applied to detect CGA in plant extracts, coffee and fruit juices, with recovery ranges from 88.93 to 98.49 %. The MIPs-CS:ZnS QDs/PDA composite sensor offers a simple and robust approach for CGA detection in real samples without requiring pre-treatment.

Construction of 1, 10-phenanthroline functionalized magnetic starch as a lead (II) tagged surface imprinted biopolymer for highly selective targeting of toxic lead ions

In this research 1, 10 - phenanthroline functionalized CaFe₂O₄ - starch was employed as a magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) for highly selective targeting toxic Pb²⁺ ions from aqueous media. VSM analysis revealed that the sorbent has magnetic saturation of 10 emu g^-1 which is appropriate for magnetic separation. Moreover, TEM analysis confirmed that the adsorbent is composed of particles with a mean diameter of 10 nm. According to XPS analysis, lead coordination with phenanthroline is the main adsorption mechanism that is along with electrostatic interaction. A maximum adsorption capacity of 120 mg g^-1 was obtained within 10 min at a pH of 6 and an adsorbent dosage of 20 mg. Kinetic and isotherm studies showed that lead adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. The selectivity coefficient of Pb (II) relative to Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cd(II) was 4.7, 14, 20, 36, 13 and 25, respectively. Moreover, the IIP represents the imprinting factor of 1.32. The sorbent showed good regeneration after five cycles of the sorption/desorption process with an efficiency of >93 %. Finally represented IIP was used for lead preconcentration from various matrices i.e., water, vegetable, and fish samples.

Field specific capture of Pb(II) in aqueous samples with three channels in-tip microextraction apparatus based on ion-imprinted polymer

On-site specific capture is a critical step in accurate analysis of trace Pb(II) in environmental waters. In this connection, a new Pb(II)-imprinted polymer-based adsorbent (LIPA) was in-situ prepared in pipette tip and used as the extraction medium of laboratory-made portable three channels in-tip microextraction apparatus (TIMA). Density function theory was employed to verify the selection of functional monomers for the preparation of LIPA. The physical and chemical properties of the prepared LIPA were inspected with various characterization techniques. Under the beneficial preparation parameters, the LIPA presented satisfactory specific recognition performance towards Pb(II). Selectivity coefficients of LIPA towards Pb(II)/Cu(II) and Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 6.82 and 3.27 times higher than that of non-imprinted polymer-based adsorbent, respectively, and the adsorption capacity towards Pb(II) was as high as 36.8 mg/g. Freundlich isotherm model fitted well with the adsorption data, revealing that the adsorption of Pb(II) on LIPA was a multilayer process. After optimizing the extraction conditions, the developed LIPA/TIMA was employed to field selectively separate and enrich trace Pb(II) in various environmental waters followed by quantification with atomic absorption spectrometry. The enhancement factor, linear range, limit of detection and RSDs for precision were 183, 0.50-10000 ng/L, 0.14 ng/L and 3.2-8.4%, respectively. Accuracy of the developed approach was inspected by means of spiked recovery and confirmation experiments. Achieved results reveal that the developed LIPA/TIMA technique is good for field selective separation and preconcentration of Pb(II) and the introduced approach can be used to measure ultra-trace Pb(II) in a variety of waters.

Fully inkjet-printed paper-based Pb2+ optodes for water analysis without interference from the chloramine disinfectant

We developed a paper-based colorimetric sensor for facile and cost-effective detection of Pb²⁺ in drinking and environmental water samples. The Pb²⁺ ion-selective optodes are fabricated by inkjet printing of ionophore, chromoionophore, and ion exchanger on cellulose paper. Pb²⁺ in water samples induces deprotonation of the pH chromoionophore and changes the optode color, which is acquired and analyzed by a smartphone. The paper-based optode without any plasticizer or polymer has a dynamic range and selectivity comparable to those of traditional optodes using PVC polymer and/or plasticizer. Furthermore, the response time of the plasticizer/polymer-free paper-based optode is much shorter than those of plasticized PVC-based optodes on paper and glass (5 min vs. 15 and 50 min). Moreover, the plasticizer/polymer-free optode preserves the water-wicking capability of porous cellulose paper, allowing for the design of pump-free microfluidic devices. Chloramine, a widely used disinfectant in drinking water, was found to be a strong and generic interference species for heavy metal ion detection via ion-selective optodes. A fully inkjet-printed lateral-flow paper-based device consisting of a sodium thiosulfate-based chloramine elimination zone and a plasticizer/polymer-free sensing zone was designed for Pb²⁺ detection in tap water disinfected by chloramine. The dynamic range of the Pb²⁺ sensor may be shifted from the current 10^-6 to 10^-5 M to lower concentrations by using stronger ionophores, but this work lays a foundation for the design of paper-based heavy metal ion sensors without detrimental interference from disinfectants.
